“It’s important to believe in people. I believe in Joe Cavanaugh and his team to touch the lives of 100,000 people in the next 12 months. I believe that 100,000 young people, multiplied by the years YF will be around, will change the world.”

– Richard Davis Chairman, President and CEO of U.S. Bank2

Thanks to outgoing board members, Craig Vana and David Walsh, for their support and service.

Dear Friends,

33

I hear about Youth Frontiers’ impact from kids every day, often in unlikely places. Recently at my local grocery store, the kid bagging my groceries quietly said to me, “Hey, are you the guy from that Respect Retreat?” I replied, “Yes.” He said meekly, “Thanks. Your retreats help us underdogs.”

You, our incredible donors, help us reach those “underdogs.” This past school year, your support made it possible for us to

inspire more than 113,000 students and educators on a record 708 retreats that focused on values like kindness, courage, responsibility and respect. Your partnership covered 40 percent of our operational costs, ensuring that each and every one of our schools can afford our programs, so that no child is left behind in the “character-achievement” gap.

Our independent evaluations show that our best-practice retreats for youth and for educators are a viable strategy to help close this gap. The greater body of research on social-emotional learning, character development and teacher engagement also demonstrates that as part of a network of support, Youth Frontiers helps schools be better.

Because character starts with kids’ hearts. This annual report shares the stories of kids, teachers, principals and donors whose lives have been transformed by our programs. You’ll see how our dynamic retreats build empathy and compassion, inspire courage and ensure respect for all kids, especially the “underdogs” for whom school might not be such a great place.

Your generosity creates the momentum that will enable us to etch character on tens of thousands of kids’ hearts in the 2013 – 2014 school year. Thank you for making our work, our dreams and this movement towards fostering greater character among our young people possible.

With gratitude,

Joe CavanaughFounder & CEO

“After our Courage Retreat, I had six girls come into my office crying. They apologized to me about all the bad things they had done in the past year and promised to be better. They even thanked me for keeping them accountable, which just blew my mind. I’ve never witnessed students coming to administration to apologize like that before. I think that speaks volumes about Youth Frontiers’ impact and their high-quality programming.”

– Hamilton Bell, Principal, Farnsworth Aerospace PK-8 Magnet School,

St. Paul, Minn.

THE CHARACTER MOVEMENT

In May 2013, YF began a collaboration with St. Paul Public Schools (SPPS) to help them transition from junior highs to middle schools. By the end of the 2013 – 2014 school year, we will have worked with every sixth, seventh and eighth grader in SPPS. That’s more than 7,200 middle school students – and thousands of families – who will be inspired to build community and make their schools a better place.

This district-wide focus on character has created great change within kids’ hearts and has inspired educators on a larger scale. As part of our strategic plan, we’re developing this approach as a model for other school districts.

This past year, Youth Frontiers worked with more students and educators than ever before. We want to keep this momentum, this movement towards better character, going strong by partnering with new school districts, increasing our social media presence and extending our reach in the Midwest. This Character Movement will give us the chance to challenge more kids to stand up for what’s right and encourage them to act with courage, kindness and respect.

“I KNOW OUR SCHOOL WILL BE DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF YOUTH FRONTIERS. I’ve realized that what you do is what I want to do when I’m older – help kids find their courage.”

Social Media

Our Facebook and Twitter pages connect us with thousands of students, educators and parents on a daily basis. It’s a place for both kids and adults to reach out to us, ask questions and share their own Youth Frontiers experiences. And with cyberbullying and disrespect online on the rise, we’re proud to be a virtual voice of character for kids.

Social media is the best way for us to directly connect with students after their Youth Frontiers retreats. This past year, our Facebook page reached almost 10,000 “likes” and our Twitter page surpassed 1,000 followers. We’re planning other social media ventures in the near future, including a blog for parents and a podcast for educators that will focus on the importance of character development. Our hope is to be a positive online resource for those who champion the Character Movement.

Page 8: The 2013 Youth Frontiers Annual Report

STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS BROKEN DOWN BY STATE:

“At my first Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat visit, I saw kids literally transform during the course of the day. The well-developed retreat content and the skill of the staff clearly resonated with the kids who stepped up at the end of the retreat with clear, courageous goals. As a children’s healthcare professional, I know that the health of a child is not just physical; it’s also mental and emotional. Youth Frontiers is helping us develop healthy children.”

– Kathy English, COO, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Omaha, Neb.

Midwest ExpansionOur momentum has led us to inspire more students and educators across the Midwest with each passing year. Many communities have stood up and challenged us to do more. They want their kids to get an “A” in life, not just in math or science.

One of those communities is Omaha, Nebraska. This past year, due to the positive response to our retreat programs, we opened our first satellite office in Omaha and hired two local staff members. This growth in Nebraska is an exciting opportunity for Youth Frontiers to reach even more students and educators across the state.

In the 2012 – 2013 school year, Youth Frontiers reached 113,000 students and educators in the Midwest.

MINNESOTA – 80,000 WISCONSIN – 12,000NEBRASKA – 10,000 IOWA – 3,000 OTHER STATES – 8,000

Thank you for helping us inspire so many kids across the Midwest! We couldn’t do this crucial work without your support.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

“As a result of a record number of Youth Frontiers retreats, the incredible generosity of our donors and the diligent financial management by YF’s leadership and the board of directors, once again Youth Frontiers has beaten its budget and finds itself in a strong financial position with a year-end surplus. Guided by the board of directors, we made three key investments with the surplus, including:

• A deposit to our reserves to protect YF’s financial future.

• A financial thank-you gift to our staff for their hard work.

• An upgrade of our technology to meet the growing needs of our school partners.

We humbly thank you for making this mission possible. You make the Character Movement happen.”
