Judges’  Comments:  Wow.  A  terrific  job  of  writing  about  a  missing  college  student.  The  whole  package  is  impressive,  including  the  detailed,  old-‐fashioned  footwork.  A  clear  winner.

Judges’  Comments:  The  amount  of  time  and  effort  that  went  into  this  story  is  astounding,  digging  for  multiple  sources  and  fresh  leads.  It's  well  written  and  gives  readers  insights  into  a  major  issue  in  a  university  town,  the  perils  of  student  safety.  The  stories  could  be  a  tutor  for  crime  reporters.

Judges’  Comments:  Making  tragedy  more  than  news,  but  personal.  This  story  is  long,  but  interesting  throughout  and  masterfully  crafted,  using  multiple  sources  to  give  it  balance.  The  kind  of  stories  newspapers  ought  to  be  telling.

Judges’  Comments:  If  there  is  one  thing  that  gets  the  public’s  attention  in  politics  is  the  hypocritical  politician.  Your  series  on  state  Rep.  Hinkle  showed  why  rock-‐solid,  old-‐school  information  gathering  is  still  the  standard.  Story  was  way  out  in  front  of  the  competition.  Outstanding  work.

Judges’  Comments:  This  could  be  a  book  on  crime  reporting.  The  amount  of  investigation,  combined  with  gripping,  well-‐crafted  writing,  is  stunning.  It's  a  mark  of  excellence  when  readers  get  so  involved  that  they  call  the  newspaper  looking  for  help  on  other  cases,  rather  than  the  police.  A  testament  to  solid  journalism.
