Concept initiated in 2004 by Institute for European Studies, UBC (with Capilano College as the administrative offices)

Development of the Study TourFirst Tour in 2004 – 2 weeks with 20

students—a partnership between the Institute for European Studies (UBC), European Studies (University of Victoria) & Political Studies (Capilano College)

Expands across the country: 12 universities in 6 provinces participated in 2007

Tour extends to 3 weeks; 40 to 45 studentsInternships added as follow-up to Tour

Thematic TopicsChallenges generated by the recent enlargement of

the EU with the addition of 12 new member states between May 2004 and January 2007. Issues relating to the EU's external policy as well as its internal effects.

Policy regarding the EU's external neighbourhood (especially in the West Balkans), and efforts to avoid the emergence of a new East/West divide on the EU's eastern border (particularly in relation to Russia and other post-Soviet states).

Social consequences of enlargement, including effects on labour migration, human trafficking, the securitization of the EU's external borders and measures to address regional inequality, as well as continuing efforts at institutional reform.

Internship selection Early Marcheach student interested in an internship will

submit (through his/her sponsoring faculty member) the following;A curriculum vitae;A Tour standard application form providing:

A priority list of three internship host institutions; A brief description of the contribution the applicant can

make to the host institution; A brief description of the benefit the internship will be to

the applicant.A recommendation from an academic advisor or

the sponsoring faculty member .

Internship selection process for 2008The Academic Coordinating Committee and the

Tour Coordinators will make the selection process by taking into account:the student file;an appropriate balance among the participating

Canadian universities; the specific needs and requirements of the host

institutions.

The internship candidates may be offered one or two possibilities from among the ones that they have selected or others where necessary.

Transatlantic Transport A grant is available for interns provided by

Foreign Affairs & International Trade Canada

An intern will receive a partial payment on commencement of the internship and the balance on submission of a student’s report and confirmation by the host institution of successful completion of the internship.

Study Tour – Follow-up possibilities

Public Diplomacy grant from the European Commission to carry onStudent Outreach work in CanadaStudent Monographs on the improvement of

Canada-EU relations (youth perspective)The participants in the Tour may access the grant

to assist them in defraying their costs. The projects also allow students to engage in recognized professional work.

Student Outreach work in CanadaFollowing their return to Canada, students have the

opportunity to organize workshops, write articles, and give lectures on their EU experience to organizations across Canada reflecting civil society.

For example: business organizations (e.g. Chambers of Commerce); service organizations; organizations of teachers in the school system; trade unions and employer organizations; elected municipal officials; professional organizations; organizations with special interests (seniors, health advocates, anti-poverty advocates, environmentalists, women’s rights advocates, etc.).

Promotion of the debate and discussion on the improvement of EU-Canada relations from a “youth” perspective.

Students upon their return to Canada will have the opportunity to write papers as a contribution by young scholars to the development of the EU-Canada relationship.

Monograph will be published and provided to academics , EU and Canadian officials and opinion-leaders in civil society
