The sixth LexisNexis Butterworths Taxation Awards ceremony was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Park Lane Hilton on 24th May 2006.

Over 700 people gathered to support and congratulate their friends, partners and colleagues in a celebration of excellence and achievement in the field of tax.

We welcome the opportunity to recognise the individuals and teams in practice, in industry and in Government who manage to reach those high standards of technical excellence, innovation and quality of service.

I would like to thank Francesca Lagerberg and the judges who had the difficult task of selecting a winner in each category from the huge number of entries we received this year.

All our shortlisted entries would have been worthy winners, and those who did not make it onto the shortlist were of the highest standard proving that it would be worth having another try next year.

The LexisNexis Butterworths Taxation Awards would not happen without the generosity of our sponsors. I would particularly like to thank them for their continuing support.

I would like to add my personal congratulations to all the winners and nominees and share in your achievements.

We are already looking forward to the 2007 LexisNexis Butterworths Taxation Awards, and hope that you are too. If you haven’t entered in the past, why not make a decision now to enter next year?

This is my sixth and fi nal year of chairing the judges for the Taxation Tax Awards. It has been a privilege and a pleasure reviewing the entries each year, with my fellow judges, and enjoying the knowledge that our tax profession is thriving in terms of its depth, its quality and its commitment to professional excellence.

When we fi rst began the Tax Awards we were nervous about who would enter and how it would be possible to pick a winner. The numbers of entries long ceased to be an issue and the volume increases each year. Picking a winner remains as diffi cult as ever but only because it is hard to differentiate one deserving entrant from another. This year was no exception. We commend all the entries for the thought and effort which went into each one. Our job was probably harder than ever before as the sheer quality of the entrants showed through.

I would like to thank all my fellow judges, who were drawn from a broad spectrum of the tax industry. They studied their way through a considerable volume of paperwork and brought their knowledge and expertise to bear on determining the winners.

The only category not determined by the judging panel was the new award for best lecturer. This was chosen by readers of Taxation magazine.

I would like to thank all of those who make the awards possible. This includes the organisational skills of RBI, the perseverance of chief co-ordinator for LexisNexis Butterworths, Steve Willcox and the behind the scenes input from Heather Myers and her colleagues.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my stint as Chairman of the Judges for this prestigious Awards event and I know that my successor, Mike Truman (Editor of Taxation magazine) will take over this role with considerable aplomb.

All the judges would like to offer their congratulations to the winners this year and to the nominees. As the Tax Awards goes from strength to strength, those who have not sought to enter before will hopefully be inspired and maybe it will be them picking up an Award in 2007.

WORD FROM THE SPONSORCongratulations to Grant Thornton’s London Corporate & International Tax Team and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Local Authority VAT Team on their success in these two prestigious categories, and indeed to all tonight’s winners and other nominees on their efforts and successes over the last year.

In this, BLT’s 19th year, we remain proud to continue our association with the LexisNexis Butterworths Taxation Awards, and to share in this extremely worthwhile celebration of the UK taxation community. We can all agree that the community is currently thriving, a fact evidenced so highly by the current strong demand for additional resources across public practice and in in-house tax departments.

We continue to be the fi rst choice recruiter for many candidates and clients across the Direct and Indirect Tax fi elds, from Partners and Heads of Tax down to the Trainees and Assistants (who will of course be the Partners and Heads of Tax of the future).

The issues faced by tax departments, including the changes hidden in the small print of Gordon Brown’s recent budget, remain in depth and challenging. The tax community will of course rise to these.

From all of us, we wish all at the LexisNexis Butterworths Taxation Awards continued success for the remainder of 2006 and beyond.

WORD FROM THE SPONSORCongratulations from Michael Page Taxation!

May we offer our heartfelt congratulations on winning these prestigious awards which we are delighted to sponsor.

Michael Page Taxation continues to lead the way in Tax Recruitment. Since its foundation in 1983 the team has focussed on the recruitment of tax professionals in practice, industry, commerce and the fi nancial services sectors. The business has continued to grow and now has more than 20 specialist consultants servicing the whole of the UK, with dedicated tax consultants based in London, Bristol, Southampton, Reading, Birmingham, Nottingham, Cambridge, Leeds, Manchester and Scotland.

When dealing with Michael Page Taxation you will get the chance to work with industry experts who have an in-depth knowledge of their specialist market. No other specialist tax recruiter works with the breadth of clients that we do and also works on a non-commission basis. This allows us to focus purely on fi nding the best long term solution for you rather than maximising our own short term fi nancial gain.

To fi nd out how Michael Page can assist you, please call either Chris Conner or Alex Stirling on 020 7269 2000.

This is a new category and has unlike the other categories been both nominated and voted for by the readers of Taxation. Readers were asked to nominate lecturers for their Continuing Professional

Development lectures, looking for the person who could hold an audience, tell them what they really needed to know, explain complex tax matters simply and clearly, and send you away feeling

that listening to them had been a good use of your precious time.

The winner was Alan Barr – proof that you don’t have to be based in London to win! Alan lectures mostly in Scotland, where he is a partner in the Edinburgh based law practice, Brodies.
