In today’s class we will learn about:● Repression of the United Irishmen.● The Rebellion in Wexford.● The successes of General Humbert.● The capture of Wolfe Tone.

Repression of the United Irishmen

After the French failed to land at Bantry Bay, the British forces under General Lake attempted to repress the United Irishmen using:● Floggings. ● Half-hangings.● Pitch-capping.● The Northern Star was banned.● Spies and informers were used to identify the leaders.

The Rebellion in Leinster

● After the brutal treatment of Wexford by British soldiers, a revolt was led by Fr. John Murphy.

● They had victories at Oulart Hill, Enniscorthy and Wexford.

● They were eventually defeated at the Battle of Vinegar Hill

The Battle of Vinegar Hill

The Rebellion in Connaught● French General Humbert sailed to Ireland to help the

Rebellion. They defeated General Lake’s forced in Castlebar - The Races of Castlebar.

● Eventually defeated by British forces.● Not realising that Humbert’s force had been defeated,

another French force arrived with Wolfe Tone on board. ● They too were defeated.● Wolfe Tone was captured and died a week after cutting

his own throat with a penknife.

In Conclusion● Despite initial success, the Rebellion

eventually failed. ● The British attempted to repress the United

Irishmen by using terror and torture. ● Fr. John Murphy led the Rebels in Wexford.● General Humbert defeated the British at

Castlebar but was later defeated.● Wolfe Tone was captured by the British.
