Dear Mercedes-Benz golf friends,

Mercedes-Benz and Golf - over decades these two have grown together intrinsically and together with our partnership of the Masters, Mercedes-Benz is very proud to be an Official Patron of The Open. ‘The One. The Open.’ a pioneer of traditional yet innovative golf and the oldest Major championship in the world – this is The Open.

The Open has been held at fourteen of the greatest and most demanding links courses in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Each year it attracts not only the world’s best golfers but golf fans from all over the world, all of whom are eagerly awaiting this challenging Major. In 2018, The 147th Open takes place at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland.

Carnoustie is the longest of any of the The Open venues and with its thick rough and difficult bunkers, it is known as one of the world’s most challenging links courses. Carnoustie has previously hosted The Open seven times. The last time being in 2007 when Ireland’s Padraig Harrington won the famous Claret Jug. We are proud that Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors Rickie Fowler, two-time Major winner Bernhard Langer, and Haotong Li will join the elite field of The Open. With an exceptional performance, Haotong Li finished third at last year’s Open, his first ever participation in this Major tournament. With great excitement we are awaiting our Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors at Carnoustie and hope they will be in a position to compete for the Claret Jug in 2018.

We are pleased to offer you this ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ chance to benefit from this partnership and invite you to this exclusive experience full of legendary moments supporting the Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors. Premium hospitality, VIP chauffeur service, entertaining evening programmes and VIP invitation-only tickets ensure an experience beyond compare.

With the ‘Drive to the Major’ competition, Mercedes-Benz combines the international MercedesTrophy premium amateur tournament series with professional golf at The Open and offers golfers the chance to be part of this fantastic experience. The ‘Drive to the Major’ participants will have the chance to qualify for the Monday After Event played directly after The Open on the same course where the world’s best golfers have played for the Claret Jug the day before. The competition is the single entry point worldwide to win a spot in this ‘money can’t buy’ event. A worldwide USP for Mercedes-Benz!

We are looking forward to welcoming you to this year’s Open - ‘The One to watch, The One to remember, The One to celebrate’.

Kind regards,

Dr. Jens ThiemerVice President Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars

This is The One. The Open. The purest form of golf - uniqueness through tradition and innovation

Since 1860, The Open has been played at fourteen of the world’s greatest and most demanding links courses and has produced moments of history and a legacy of great champions. It is the original championship and golf’s truest test, reflecting the sport in its purest form.

The greatest players in the world of golf have been facing the unrelenting challenge of The Open for more than 150 years. Back in 1860, the very first Open took place, when eight professional golfers assembled for a tournament at Prestwick to determine the Champion Golfer. Back in these days the winner was presented with the ‘Challenge Belt’, made of red Moroccan leather and worth £25. Only one year later, Prestwick announced that the tournament ‘shall be open to all the world’ and since 1873, the Champion Golfer wins one of the most iconic trophies in all of sport - the Claret Jug. Nowadays the pursuit of the famous Claret Jug trophy is the focus of the sporting world for one week in July and is followed globally by thousands of spectators on the course and millions of fans watching on TV.

The Open is the third Major of the season and is played in the third week of July. This year’s Open will return to Carnoustie for the eighth time and will be The 147th Open. Golf has been played at Carnoustie since the early 16th century. The Carnoustie Golf Club was formed 1839 and around that time the golf course consisted of 10 holes. In 1867 the course was extended to 18 holes and in 1931 Carnoustie hosted The Open for the first time. Carnoustie has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the toughest golf destinations in the world. Difficulties are the strong winds which blow along this exposed stretch of the Angus coast, the bunkering, which is perfectly positioned to capture anything less than a top-quality shot, and also the length and narrowness of the golf course.

With the return of The Open to this historic place, a thrilling Championship can be expected. Millions of spec-tators will be awaiting the world’s best golfers, including our Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors, teeing off to win the coveted Open trophy, the Claret Jug.
