The 13th Annual Music for Medicine Benefit Thursday, November 5th, 2009 The 2009 “Music for Medicine” benefit in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall was a resounding success, raising $430,000 to support the Salzburg Medical Seminars of the Open Medical Institute (OMI), a global initiative founded by Weill Cornell Medical College, NewYork- Presbyterian Hospital, the Open Society Institute and The American Austrian Foundation to educate young and promising physicians from countries in transition through seminars, observerships and distance learning. Ambassador William vanden Heuvel welcomed the guests and introduced a short film pro- duced by Salzburg Alumnus, Dr. Bella Grigorian, illustrating the impact the Salzburg Medical Seminars have had on Armenian physicians and their resulting continuing medical education program, which is based on the Salzburg model. Dean Antonio Gotto and Dr. Wolfgang Aulitzky provided a brief program update. Members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra including first chairs Dieter Flury (flute), Tobias Lea (viola), and Robert Nagy (cello), the Orchestra’s President Clemens Hellsberg (violin), and the first female Concertmaster in the Orchestra’s 140 year history, Albena Danailova, performed works by Haydn, Mozart, Bartok and Mercandante concluding with a work by Richard Strauss, which is never heard as it was performed this evening. In his autobiographical symphonic tone poem “Ein Heldenleben” , Richard Strauss dedicated one of the six sections to his wife Pauline The American Austrian Foundation 13th Annual Music for Medicine Concert saying, “It is my wife whom I wished to portray. She is very complicated, a little kinky, a little coquettish, never predict- able, changing from minute to minute.” Pauline Strauss is represented by the violin, and the solo in “Ein Heldenleben” is one of the greatest found in symphonic literature. Albena Danailova played it four times with the Vienna Philharmonic in October, and she did so again here following the Mozart duets. “Ein Heldenleben” is written for a large orchestra, but the violin solo, over long stretches, is truly a solo. The entrances of the full orchestra have to be imagined. To assist the audience in doing so Clemens Hellsberg recounted the instructions which Richard Strauss gave to the violin soloist: “duplicitously languishing” , “merry” , “high-spirited” , “playful” , “lovable” , “cheerful” , “soothing” , “irate” , “quick and nagging” , “tender and affectionate” . Following the concert, guests moved to the Rohatyn Room for dinner and a live auction. The highlight of this year’s auction was a private concert with Yefim Bronfman and we thank Barbara and Donald Tober for making the winning bid. Total proceeds from the auction and raffle were $55,000, our best result to date.
