Post-symposium fieldtrip THE EOCENE FROM THE NW TRANSYLVANIAN BASIN Date: September 21 Leaders: Ioan I. Bucur, Emanoil Săsăran and George Pleş Duration: 1 day. Departure: Babeş-Bolyai University, Department of Geology, 1 M. Kogălniceanu str. (in front of the main entrance), 21th September 2019 (Saturday), 08:30 a.m. Return: same day, ~06:00 p.m. Transportation: Bus. Personal insurance: Not included in the fee; participants should have their own travel insurance. Description: Stop 1 – Letca Quarry. – Upper Eocene-lower Oligocene bio-constructed and bio-accumulated

limestones. Coralgal bioconstructions consist of bafflestones built-up by flat or dendriform coral

colonies. Ecological sequences can be recognized within these bioconstructions, with flat coral

colonies in the base encrusted by red algae, followed by dendriform corals associated with red

algae. Stop 2 – Cuciulat-Băbeni Quarry. The limestones from the ―Marble‖ quarry are mined as

ornamental building stones. The ―Marble‖ quarry from Cuciulat is located at about 1 km from

Băbeni village. Bioaccumulated and bioconstructed facies types have been identified. Stops 3 – Botanical Garden Jibou. The botanical garden of Jibou has a rich dendrological fund

of exotic plants. The basic dendrological sector dates back to 1781 and contains numerous and

valuable species The greenhouses contain various and valuable tropical, subtropical and

Mediterranean collections, the plants being grouped systematically or ecologically. The garden

also has an aquarium for tropical plant collections, a huge sector of ornamental plants, herbarium

and museum pieces.
