That wonderful time of year!

At Christmas time, I like the book of Ruth. Some call it a love story, some say it’s about mothers and daughters—I say it’s about Christmas.

At a time in Biblical history when many were willing to disregard God’s law, a man named Boaz was sure to provide to the less fortunate by obeying the instructions of Leviticus 19:9-10 to let the poor glean what was left in the field from harvest time. Boaz’ obedience has the impact of introducing him to a woman named Ruth whom he would marry and would give birth to a son named Obed. At the end of the book we learn something crucial about Obed—he is the grandfather to another well-known figure in the Bible—King David. And from this line of kings would come the King of Kings: Jesus Christ.

We don’t follow the gleaning law today in literal terms, but places like Cornerstone Rescue Mission are and will continue to be the outlets through which we can all exhibit simple obedience to the call of caring for those less fortunate than ourselves. It is easy to get involved in the holiday festivities and overlook the “least of these”. Cornerstone appreciates all you do for us, and we take heart in the knowledge that there are things bigger than ourselves at work, especially during this blessed time of year.

Thank you for your simple obedience and the love you show to others through your support of Cornerstone Rescue Mission. From all of us at Cornerstone we wish you a most Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

God Bless,

Tom GoldenExecutive Director

Most of us would agree it is indeed that wonderful time of year, but not everyone feels that way. We find that many of the homeless and hurting people we serve do not have wonderful memories of this time of year. They feel it is as dismal as their present condition, and their memories reinforce their despair and suggest the future holds nothing better.

That is why Cornerstone Rescue Mission is here – to compassionately embrace hurting people and instill the hope of a better future. We share Christ’s story all year long, and in this season we are blessed to continue to do so.

Every year we hold our annual “Christmas Store” for all the guests of the five programs Cornerstone operates. This includes the children from Dear Ones Child Care, the men from the Mission, the families from the Cornerstone Apartments, the veterans from the Veteran Transitional Housing Program, and the women and children from the Women and Children’s Home.

They come to the Cornerstone Thrift Store at their appointed time and exchange their gift certificates for gifts for themselves and others. Everyone living at Cornerstone gets a gift certificate regardless of their age. They are treated to cookies and hot chocolate and we provide free gift wrapping. Of course, Santa is there with something special for each child, and everyone gets a warm coat, hat, mittens or gloves, and any kind of winter outerwear of their choosing. Please consider donating gently used coats and winter wear for this important event.

Last year one little boy found a grandpa smurf figure and was so delighted he did not let it go from his hand all evening. Another little boy saw a Spiderman coat and according to his mom that was all he wanted for Christmas. The delight on his face was apparent as he hugged the coat to his chest. Some of the older children struggle with the decision to use their gift certificate for much needed clothes or something they really would prefer over clothing. At past events they have used their gift certificates to buy something for their mom or dad foregoing their own desires hoping to surprise their parent with a gift for Christmas morning.

The cookies and hot chocolate with extra whipped cream is always a hit! Here is a family enjoying the treats at last year’s Cornerstone Christmas Store.

Merry Christmas and Blessings for the New Year to everyone from Cornerstone Rescue Mission!
