Trusted Friends:

As the region’s university, Indiana University Northwest plays a critical role in creating access to higher education and ensuring that all students have the opportunity to invest in their futures through personal, affordable and life-changing academic experiences.

As you have most likely witnessed, great work happens each and every day on this campus. It is the innovative thinking, problem-solving and community-building that reminds me, and my colleagues, that, as a campus, we are truly fulfilling the IU promise.

It is the promise of providing our students with an opportunity to earn a world-class IU degree, the promise of preparing our students for whatever comes next, and the promise of a lifetime of success.

Your investment in IU Northwest, given through your time, talent or treasure, helps us to further that promise, through scholarship support, facilities improvements, and faculty research advancements.

Because of your investment, IU Northwest continues to raise the bar of excellence in recruiting and retaining exceptional students.

We all have a personal stake in the future growth and prosperity of our region’s university. Your gift and the IU Northwest academic experience combine gracefully to create a transforming effect on our campus, and in the lives and careers of our faculty, staff, students and alumni.

In behalf of our entire campus community, please accept my sincerest thanks for your generous support of IU Northwest.

I remain Yours,

William J. LoweChancellor

Growing up as one of six children, it’s fair to say that Bernadette Grabowski is very close with her family. In fact, staying local so

that she could live with her family, was one of the primary reasons she enrolled at IU Northwest.

We are glad she did. Not only a stellar student with the grades to show it, Bernie, as her close friends call her, is also captain of the IU Northwest RedHawks basketball team. Her enthusiastic spirit for all things IU, as well as her commitment to her studies, makes her a true role model for the Northwest campus.

Bernie attributes her pride and work ethic to her family, but also to the many others who are making her educational journey a success. In fact, without the two scholarships she currently holds, earning

her IU degree would be a challenge, requiring her to work even more hours and pass up volunteer opportunities, so that her tuition could be covered.

In benefiting from others’ generosity, she, too, has learned a thing or two about giving, volunteering regularly at a local grade school, her church and even on campus.

Her drive is to give back to others, just as others have done for her.

“That’s the great thing about philanthropy, it encourages me to be a better person, while at the same time,

makes me consider how I could better help others.”

As first-generation college graduates, Myriam and Christopher Young, Ph.D. know well the challenges but also the

great opportunities that come with earning a college degree.

For them, earning their degrees was their way of transforming their lives. But their educational journey would not have been as smooth if not for some help and support from generous philanthropic donors, who also believed in them, and their dreams.

Now successful members of the IU Northwest campus, the Youngs regularly teach, mentor and work with IU Northwest students who have stories much like theirs.

Students who are making sacrifices, working two jobs, and balancing the competing demands of college, work and family, all in an effort to earn their IU degree.

These students are their inspiration, and the reasons why the Youngs give back their time, talent and treasure to IU Northwest.

As a family, their philanthropic guiding spirit is: “It’s important to give back and to serve others.”

“By helping others to achieve a better life, it helps our community,

our region and beyond. It really has a ripple effect.”

For Tom and Sylvia Collins, ‘76 MS, giving to IU, specifically to the Northwest campus, is tied not only to their strong roots to the region but also to their belief in the power of a college degree.

As a highly successful, yet equally philanthropic couple, Tom and Sylvia believe that education is truly key to everything: from individual success, to the compounding effects a degree can have on a region, as a whole.

Recognizing that education truly was key to their “everything,” the Collins established an endowed scholarship fund, which lives on indefinitely from their investment.

Having benefited many IU Northwest students since its establishment 25 years ago, the Collins realize they are not only helping individuals who otherwise might not be able to afford an education but they are also helping Northwest Indiana thrive.

“Those students, we hope, will (in the future) also feel an obligation to

give back. And they will go on to solve problems and contribute to their

communities, most likely right here in the region.”
