Graduates of 2013 Thank you, good luck and God’s speedGraduation Day is always a much anticipated occasion here at the College. For the whole College family - Seniors, their parents, family members, staff and students - to come together in liturgy, in valediction and in recognition is a wonderful celebration of all that is representative of St Augustine’s College and all that goes into the tremendous contribution of the Senior Class, both as individuals and as a collective.

It is marvellously fitting that each of the three elements of the day - the Graduation Mass, the Valedictory Assembly and the Graduation Dinner - can all be celebrated in Lennon Hall, which is at the heart of so much that we do here as a College.

The Mass was a highly significant and deeply moving celebration of the Senior Class. How resplendent and proud they looked, as they made their final liturgical entrance into the Hall. Their parting gift to the College, a magnificent crucifix which will hang permanently in Lennon Hall was blessed by Fr Laurie and admired by the entire congregation. Before the conclusion of Mass, with a highly emotive rendition of the College Hymn, the symbols of leadership were handed over to the Senior Class of 2014, who will write the next chapter in the College’s story.

The Valedictory Assembly, slightly less formal in its unfolding, was a fitting tribute to our graduands. It brought together in speech, song and video all the many elements of the Senior class and the tremendous contribution it has made to the life of the College. The Guard of Honour was a beautiful reflection of the relationship that our young men have established with their College, with the students from the other grades, with the staff and amongst one another.

The Dinner, in an utterly transformed Lennon Hall setting, brought the entire day to a superb climax. Our young men did their College, their families and themselves proud as they graduated with distinction and dignity. It was a great day all round and we wish them good luck and God’s speed. Vale!

In my attempt to familiarise myself with the local area, I have travelled to various parts of Cairns and outlying areas. What a beautiful place we live in! I have walked some beaches and the beauty and peacefulness is striking. I must say I revelled in this relaxing environment! However, on one of these days, I also sat reading The Australian newspaper while sipping a coffee, and when I reached the world news there was a sharp contrast between my surrounds and what I was reading about. It made me stop and think. The war and political instability in some parts of the world are realities we cannot even fathom. We have been called the ‘lucky country’ and I believe it to be true. My reflections also took me to those Marist Brothers who were recently acknowledged by the Church.Witnesses to the FaithMarist Brothers Cristano, Aquilino, Cipriano Jose and 65 companions (including two laymen), martyrs in Spain between 1936 and 1939, were beautified on Sunday 13 October. This group of martyrs forms part of a total of 524 people who were martyred in Spain during this time. Why were they regarded as martyrs and not simply victims of a horrendous regime? In short, they decided to stay and risk their lives rather than walk away from their responsibilities. They had a way out but in good conscience they didn’t take it. To add to this, they continued to openly wear their religious habit making them more likely to be targeted. They believed that to dispose of their habit was the equivalent of betraying their faith in Christ. In a letter to all Marists Br Emili Turu, the Superior General of the Marist Brothers worldwide, said:The word martyr, coming from Greek, means witness in that language even today. Is not that what each of them has been, the members of this diverse group of 68 martyrs? Aged from 19 to 63 (two thirds of them below the age of 40); of very different geographical and family origins (three of them French); of diverse qualities and abilities; brothers and laymen… What they had in common was a deep faith which

gave meaning to their lives and, when the time came, also to their deaths. The brothers in Aleppo, Syria have recently taken a similar decision. These brothers have decided to stay in what is one of the most dangerous cities in Syria. They just couldn’t leave the people they had been educating and caring for. An international organisation like the Marist Brothers may have helped them gain relatively safe passage out of the country. When asked what they would like to do, they could do only one thing, stay with the people. Thankfully, despite extremely difficult and trying circumstances, and near misses, the brothers and members of this community have to date remained safe. Their lives are still at risk as I write this. The depth of faith that these martyrs displayed is an inspiration and challenge to us all. For me, equally inspiring are those who remain in Aleppo today. As I consider this, I cannot but be moved to reflect on my own faith and what I would be prepared to risk my life for, if anything. It provokes me to deeply consider my faith and its meaning in my life. Perhaps, it does the same for you…..The Pope said the following words in his reflections on the martyrs of Spain:‘Let us imitate the martyrs!’ It is always necessary to die a little in order to come out of ourselves, our egoism, our wellbeing, our laziness, our sadnesses and open ourselves to God, to others, especially to those most in need of us. Let us ask for the intercession of the martyrs to be concrete Christians, Christians in deeds and not in words; to not be mediocre Christians, Christians with a coat of Christianity but without substance…I am aware too that the difficulties and hardships that many people face, including our students and their families, also put them to the test. Any of us can be confronted by the same reality. In times of hardship, the human spirit has the capacity to step up and do extraordinary things. The martyrs of Spain and the community in Aleppo are a testament to this. Our faith can be an enormous source of strength.

I pray that, even in our peace and tranquillity, we nurture our faith and that of our children, as it can bring us greater clarity, hope and love in those more trying times and give meaning to our lives. With best wishes,

Br Darren BurgePrincipal

YEAR 12 GRADUATION

Deputy principal - pastoral careThe big ticket item of this week was the Graduation of our senior cohort for 2013. Events such as this, along with the Annual Awards Night and the Year 10 Presentation provide the occasion to highlight our individual and collective achievements of the year. These events can also be a time to personally reflect on how we as individuals have spent the year. There is no doubt that Saints offers the opportunity for students to reach their potential in many areas of their adolescent life. It is important to reflect on how well we have individually grasped those opportunities and conversely to consider how we may have squandered some opportunities.

A student’s schooling years should be wonderful years of self-discovery and self-mastery. So as we personally celebrate our achievements, or witness the celebrations of other’s achievements, it is important to consider how we may better seize the opportunities that life at Saints presents. The challenge for the boys of Saints is to choose to be a player and not a spectator in the life of the College. In that way, when

their Graduation rolls by, they will leave with an enduring sense of accomplishment.

The young men of Saints who graduated last week are a tremendous group of young men and we pray that their future will be one full of hope.

Upcoming DatesYear 11 Final day is Thursday 28th November

Year 10 Presentation Mass Friday 29th November - 12 Noon

Year 8-9 Final day is Friday 29th November.

I ask that parents continue to encourage your sons to work hard through to the end of term. Please also ensure that their uniform and grooming continue to meet College expectations.

MISSION DEPARTMENT

IndIgenous studentsYALARI BRISBANE DINNER

Yalari is a scholarship funding program for Indigenous students that attend high academic achieving boarding schools around Australia. We had been lucky enough to have been awarded a scholarship at the start of Year 8. The Yalari Brisbane Dinner is an annual fundraising event for the organization that helps pay for expenses of students and other items by auctioning paintings and art works and donations from the attendees. A certain number of students on the scholarship are selected to attend this event and this year, Nathan Geno and I were two of the students selected. Nathan was nominated to do a speech about his life’s journey and where he is heading in the future. With lots of practice and tips from Mr Wright, Mr Carswell and Mr Chapman he was on his way to a great speech. We set out from Cairns on the 17th of October arriving at Brisbane in time to help set up the Brisbane Convention Centre for the special occasion. After many practice speeches we were ready for the night. At the beginning we talked with corporate managers and very important people from all across the country. After the mingling we entered the ballroom and started the dinner with some speeches by an indigenous woman and Nathan. The night continued with the auctioning of art work and donations, however, the best part of the night was meeting up with some fellow Yalari Scholars. After being served a very appetizing meal, it was basically over in a the blink of an eye. We arrived back at the accommodation at 2:00am and were no doubt keen for a greatly earned rest. The next morning turned out to be almost as exhausting and tiring as the previous day, as we had a tour organised at Bond University and another fundraising dinner which was also at Bond University. The tour in the morning was astounding as it was the first university that we had visited. The Bond University dinner turned out to be a wondrous experience as Scott Prince attended the dinner and many inspiring speeches were made. After an enjoyable night of listening to speeches and watching auctions, the arrival back to the Gold Coast turned out to be another late night for us. Saturday morning turned out to be one of the most tiresome days due to our early morning departure for the airport at 5:30 am. We’d like to thank Yalari for giving us this opportunity and experience, and Arrow Energy, one of the main sponsors of the Yalari Organisation.Nelson Foster - Year 9 Yalari Scholarship student

CHRISTMAS APPEALThe Saints Christmas Appeal has now come to an end. After 5 weeks of generous giving, we now look forward to handing the many baskets of food over to St Vincent de Paul. Congratulations to Homeroom 12.1 who were outstanding in their generous donations by contributing over $600 of groceries to this appeal. All the baskets collected over the past 5 weeks will be presented to St Vincent de Paul at our Christmas Liturgy on the final day of the term. Brett Toombs - Director of Mission.

Biology and Boating The Year 11 Biology and Marine & Aquatic Practices classes made their way up to Genazzano for the Boating and Biodiversity camps.

For the Marine boys, the primary focus for the camp was to complete the practical assessment for their boat and jet ski (optional) licences. Time on camp was divided between sessions on the water driving boats or on the land doing theory sessions and knot tying. Thanks must go to Mr Paul Little for the use of his boats and jet ski as well as to Mr Keith Mole and Mr Richard Bassano for their help with teaching the boating skills. On land, Mr Thomas Jones taught the boys how to tie some common boating knots including back and eye splice as well as revising for the theory test.

The Biology boys studied and sampled the biodiversity and ecology of the area. With the assistance of Mr Andrew Ford, the boys got to use some of their new sampling skills in the CSIRO Danbulla Research Plot. Back at Genezzano the various traps that the boys, along with Mr Max Churchward and Mrs Kastelle Gane set up, were successful in capturing a male Grassland Melomys, a bandicoot ,a number of insects and cane toads. As well as the trapping and bird watching around the Genazzano camp grounds, the Biology boys travelled to Mt Hypipamee National Park on Thursday where they managed to observe a number of possum species.

Here are a couple of tips which may help you ..

1. Concentration: Are you putting off a task you’re supposed to be working on? R. D. Clyde once said, “It’s amazing how long it takes to complete something we’re not working on.” When you start to procrastinate over something that you have to do, just ask yourself these three questions: “Do I have to do this? Do I want it done so it’s not on my mind? Will it be any easier later?” Those three questions make you accept the fact this task isn’t going away, and delaying it will only add to your guilt and make this task occupy more of your mind and time.

2. Procrastination: If you’re in the middle of a task and tempted to give up, try the “Five More Rule” Just do FIVE MORE... Read five more pages. Finish five more math

problems. Work five more minutes. Just as athletes build physical stamina by pushing past the point of exhaustion, you can build mental stamina by pushing past the point of frustration. Just as runners get their second wind by not giving up when their body initially protests, you can get your “second mind” by not giving up when your willpower initially protests. Continuing to concentrate when your brain is tired is the key to S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G your attention span and building mental endurance.

This week we bid farewell and wish our Year 12 Boarders the best of everything for their future. For some it has been five years at boarding school, for others, less years but just as much fun I am sure. As the final week began, the anticipation of the end was apparent for our seniors both in terms of the excitement about the months and years ahead and what they may hold but also some nervous anticipation about what happens next. Whatever paths our senior boarders take they will always remain a part of the Saints community and will be welcomed back any time they choose to visit. The applications and elections for Boarding Captains for 2014 took place in the past weeks also. I am pleased to announce that Courtney Gurney and Cassie Pettigrew were selected by the staff and their peers as Chavoin Boarding Captain and Vice Captain respectively. Jordan Huggett who is College Vice-Captain will also take on the role as Boarding Captain for the boys. We wish all of the 2014 Seniors the best in these important service roles in boarding. The final boarders camp for the year took place at the end of Week 5 at Barrabadeen. Around forty of the boarders trekked to the Tablelands for the camp and were rewarded with spectacular camping weather. These camps have been and continue to be, a very relaxing escape from boarding for those who choose to be a part of them. Particular thanks goes to Mr Lionel Williamson and Mr Keith Mole who are the primary drivers of these experiences for boarding. The final Boarders Mass for 2013 takes place on Sunday 17th November. I have been very pleased to observe that attendance at our boarders Masses has been excellent throughout this year. The celebration of Mass in this Catholic Boarding community is central to our existence and an emphasis on Mass attendance for our boarders will continue in 2014.A special thought for the families of our seniors who will complete their direct association with Saints boarding this year with the completion of Year 12 for their youngest or only boarding child. The prayers of this community go with you as well as your child as you all take the next step in life.Mr Bernard BurgessHead of Boarding

All four teams went through the regular season and finals series undefeated in what was a first for our College.

A brief summary of the four grand final victories was as follows.

Firstly, Saints took on St Andrew’s in the AFL at Watsons Oval. The competition was tight early, but the class and experience of the Saints team shone through and the team came away with a comprehensive 115 to 7 victory. With the Gold Coast Suns Cup already under their belts, taking out the JSS title was a great way to cap off the year. Special mention must go to my assistants, Chris Lee, Andrew Martin and Lachlan Smith who provided valuable assistance throughout the season and Finn Devine-Cameron who received the MVP for the final. In our next game, Saints took on St Mary’s in the Basketball final. The boys were looking to cap off a stellar season in which they had gone through undefeated and displayed their seasonal form in the final to take out the title 73 to 27. Well done to the coach Mr Toombs for an outstanding season and Lachlan Jennings who was named MVP for the final. In our 3rd final, Saints met TAS in Football. After a couple of tight matches against TAS throughout 2013, Saints were looking to dominate from the outset. However, TAS had other ideas and at the main break Saints lead TAS 1-0. The second half went to script for Saints where they piled on 5 goals to nil and came away with a comfortable 6-0 victory. Credit must go to the coach Mr Evans and Mr Martino for a fantastic season. Congratulations to Marco De Roma who was MVP for the final. In our fourth and final game, St Augustine’s played St Mary’s in Touch Football. The two teams had met twice during the season with Saints coming out on top by 1 & 4 tries respectively so this game was sure to follow the seasonal form and be a tight tussle. In a hard fought game, the teams traded tries throughout the first half before Saints broke the game open in the second half to run out comfortable winners. The final score was Saints 9, St Mary’s 3. Well done to the coach Mr McMenamin and MVP for the final Ethan Gardner.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank our coaches and all of the boys involved. They displayed character, sportsmanship and a passion throughout the season which would make everyone associated with St Augustine’s proud. Our humble in victory, gracious in defeat attitude will hold these teams in good stead for the future and I look forward to what the future holds for these outstanding young men.

ANNUAL AWARDS EVENINGI would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the St Augustine’s Sports Awards recipients from our recent presentation night. Congratulations must go to Matthew Cheesman (Rising Star), Jack Bowes (Junior Sportsman of the Year), Jordan Way (Senior Sportsman of the Year) and Seamus McManus (The Director of Sports Prize) for taking out the major awards.

All boys are more than worthy winners to say the least. Although these four boys stole the spotlight for sport on the night, we should not take anything away from our other sports awards winners. The numerous National, State and Peninsula Reps that were presented awards highlights the depth of talent at the College.

Finally, credit must go to all the boys who have contributed to sport at Saints in 2013. Your continued efforts will ensure that Saints remains the premier sporting school for many years to come. Your endeavours are appreciated by staff, students and the community of St Augustine’s College.
