June 2016 Vol. 28 • No. 6 South County Family dials up the heat for summer 2016 What a tremendous beginning to the summer of 2016 at South County Baptist Church! As I write these words, were only halfway through June and it is amazing to me to look back and realize all that God has accomplished through the SCBC Family over these 15 days. South County batted leadoff for the Southern Baptist Conventions massive Crossover St. Louis effort by serving more than 800 college-age leaders at the YMCA on Saturday, June 4. Even a driving rainstorm which turned the elds into a quagmire couldnt dampen the spirits of the brightly-clad SCBC volunteers. Our neon green South County shirts were evident everywhere as we not only grilled hot dogs in the rain but also offered ourselves in any way to be servants to the staff and participants at the Y. As youve doubtless heard me say before, there are more than 10,000 members of the South County branch of the Y and our strategic partnership with our neighbors up the street has the potential to prove invaluable in our efforts to connect with our community in the years to come. Im happy to report that Southern Baptist churches around the metro St. Louis area followed SCBCs lead as Crossover St. Louis ministry events were conducted throughout the city on June 11. More than 3,984 volunteers participated in 85 projects yielding more than 8,379 spiritual conversations with 556 reported professions of faith. Thank you for leading the way, South County! The Crossover event was followed immediately by our Vacation Bible School which once again proved to be the best week of the year when it comes to our ministry to children and families. Im grateful for Lydia Feagans and Rosie Ricketts-Meyer for their leadership and to all of those who served as teachers, directors, and helpers. Were still connecting with the many families who were our guests at VBS. As soon as VBS ended, we turned our attention toward hosting more than 10,000 visitors as the Southern Baptist Conventions annual meeting kicked off in St. Louis. What an honor and blessing it was to have SBC President Ronnie Floyd in the South County pulpit on June 12. Dr. Floyd has done an outstanding job in leading our convention the past two years. A bonus blessing on June 12 was Native Praise -- a womens choir from Oklahoma representing 19 Native American tribes. The ladies shared two songs in the worship service, singing in native languages of the Cherokee, Chocktaw and Chickasaw and the Muskogee Creek and Seminole people. Finally, SCBC provided 63 ushers for the Tuesday session of the SBC meeting. Again, our folks served tirelessly well, maybe we did get a little tired -- from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. under the direction and leadership of Chris Bailey. And weve only just started our summer! Pray for our Mexico Mission team and join us on Sunday, June 19 as we commission the team. Then make plans to be with us throughout July as we look toward moving back into our renovated worship center. Well have many guests who visit out of curiosity, be sure to be here to welcome them and make an effort to invite your friends, family, and neighbors to be a part of the South County Family. An important part of Vacation Bible School at SCBC is the missions emphasis. Children learn that the Bible teaches followers of Jesus to share Him with people everywhere. Bible stories are mission stories. The designated missions learning stations introduce students to modern-day missionaries from all the nations of the world. VBS mission education leads directly to mission action as kids bring their mission offerings and hygiene items for our mission team to share in Matamoros, Mexico.

We are so grateful to the children at this year’s VBS who gave more than $240 in their offering and also provided gifts of toiletries which our Mexico Mission Team will deliver to the Focus on Missions Orphanage in Matamoros in just a couple of weeks. We are also thankful for Sandy Hill’s leadership in faithfully teaching the children about Southern Baptist Missions.

Thank you for the $2,467.70 given during our two Mission Meals. This money will be used to help offset the cost of the Mexico Team’s trip to Matamoros. We look forward to commissioning the team at the conclusion of the morning worship service on June 19. By the way, we’re still collecting good, used eyeglasses and kitchenware. Thank you for all the ways you do missions.

We were reminded of the connection between the missions efforts of South County Baptist and our Southern Baptist Convention as the SBC’s annual meeting was held in our city this month. The Cooperative Program missions giving from our church budget ows through the SBC as well as special missions gifts for international and North American missions. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the convention was Tuesday evening’s session which was completely devoted to prayer for a global awakening.

I recently had the opportunity to attend a fantastic conference and would like to use this article to share a little about it. The Beta Conference was held May 23-25 in Nashville, TN at the Lifeway headquarters. I must admit that I went with a bit of apprehension, concerned that it would end up being a three day sales pitch for Lifeway products. This proved not to be the case! The conference was exceptional and particularly timely being that I’m new to the position of Minister of Education. All three speakers were former Ministers of Education and brought a ton of experience and a wealth of knowledge. Topics ranged from the characteristics of a thriving Sunday school program, Sunday school’s role in evangelism, discipleship, and ministry, and much more.

Throughout my entire time at the conference my appreciation and admiration for those willing to answer the call to be Sunday school leaders was af rmed and even strengthened. It takes commitment and sacri ce to be a good Sunday school leader, but the work of a dedicated Sunday school leader has eternal

signi cance and glori es our awesome God. Please join me in thanking our wonderful Sunday school leaders.

I recognize that not everyone is called to assume this role in the church. But if you feel God might be tugging at your heart on

this matter and would like to discuss it, please do not hesitate to contact me.

By the way, for those of you that don’t know, the Southern Baptist Convention building is across the street from Lifeway. I snapped a quick pic during a lunchtime walk and have included it (left.)

God Bless!
