We all hope you have a great May Festival
Thank you for designing this brochure and the online booking
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Kimpton Art Show in 2014.
This is the 33rd time that the village has hosted an art exhibition. What began as an attempt to raise funds for the repair of the Dacre Chapel roof is now an integral part of our village’s annual spring fayre. This year, the Kimpton May Festival is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. I offer my congratulations to those who have taken the time to organise such a splendid event over the years; it is one that our community is justly proud of. I hope that this “golden” birthday for the Festival delivers a record number of visitors to our beautiful church and to the Art Show.
Over the years, the show has become a recurrent feature on the local art calendar and we are privileged that so many artists regularly choose to exhibit here. Around 100 are displaying their work today and we extend a warm welcome to all of you.
As well as approximately 300 framed works, we have some excellent examples of photography and ceramics, and work in wood, Perspex and glass, amongst other things. Additionally, there are more than 150 unframed works in the racks at the top of the nave. Thank you for providing the material for such a wonderful exhibition.
I am pleased to report that last year’s Show continued to grow from a financial perspective. As well as providing artists with an opportunity to showcase and sell their art, the other principal aim of the Show is to generate revenue: for maintenance of the church, but also for a range of local charities and community groups. In 2013, we were able to make donations totalling £5,600. I know the beneficiaries are very grateful and would want to say a very big “thank you” to all who attended, supported, sponsored and purchased artwork at last year’s event.
We have a lot to live up to in 2014. We have taken some extra steps this year to try to attract more visitors and potential purchasers. More money has been invested in marketing and we have relaunched our Facebook page, which has apparently been “Liked” by a large number of you. The web site that we built a couple of years ago is popular and half of all the artists have chosen to apply online this year. We have also secured a number of new sponsors.
Kimpton Art Show 2014
One area where we continue to struggle is in securing reliable, secure and cost effective card payment facilities. It is frustrating, as the technology exists. Regrettably, the charging methodology that banks and other merchants apply means that it is not cost effective for us to accept “plastic”. Cash or cheque remains our preferred payment method. However, don’t panic, as Kimpton Post Office in Claggy Road has kindly offered to extend cash facilities throughout their opening hours during the Festival. Come and talk to a member of the Committee if you find yourself temporarily impecunious – I am sure we can come to some arrangement if you have found something that you would like to purchase!
As ever, many people have contributed to getting us here today. We are grateful to the Vicar and the PCC for their permission to use this splendid building as our venue once again. Congratulations are due to Revd. Canon Lorraine Summers, who was made an Honorary Canon of St Albans last year.
We are fortunate to have the continuing support of Strutt & Parker in Harpenden and of The Rusty Gun restaurant in St Ippolyts. Charlotte Knight and her business My Word Communications have once again provided the wine for the opening night. A number of other firms and individuals have chosen to advertise in this brochure and we have received pro bono technical help from Chris Knight and his firm Inner Media. Please do consider supporting these local businesses.
The Bench Working Party has, yet again, been our tower of strength, literally and metaphorically, Ben Cole continues to house and deliver all of our stands and paraphernalia, and Sue and Neil Burns have kindly agreed to step up from Bar Staff to Bar Managers to organise and serve the refreshments on the opening night. A number of musicians will entertain us free of charge over the weekend. And we are also very reliant on those of you who give up your time to act as stewards. Finally, a word about this year’s Committee: Sandra Berti, Tim Edwards, Carina Helmn, Simon McCullough and Jenny Taylor. Each one of them has made a significant contribution over the course of the last six months.
A big “thank you” to all of you.
Lastly, and importantly, many thanks to you, the visitor, for coming. I hope you enjoy the Show and find that special piece of original art work. Don’t be afraid to buy!
Ted FrithOn behalf of the Kimpton Art Show Committee
We all hope you have a great May Festival

CATALOGUE OF ART WORK
The catalogue lists all artwork that is hanging on the walls, alphabetically by artist surname, as well as photographs and other media. As far as possible, we have attempted to organise the exhibition in the church by catalogue number order. Please ask a member of the Art Show team if you are unable to locate particular works. Where artists are also exhibiting unframed work in the racks, this will be indicated in the catalogue at the bottom of the relevant artist’s listing. We have not catalogued the large number of other items that are displayed on tables in the church but there is a broad range of work to admire. If you wish to contact an artist, please feel free to let us have your details and we will pass them along.
