“ When a

The Mosquito Authority When a family friend woke up
one morning with a high fever, joint pains, and a persistent head-ache we thought what most peo-ple naturally would. We thought she must have been coming down with something. What we didn’t expect was that she had actually been bitten by an infected mos-quito and had contracted the chi-kungunya virus pronounced (chik-un-gun-ya).
The chikungunya virus as de-fined by the Merrium Webster dictionary is a febrile disease that resembles dengue, occurs espe-cially in parts of Africa, India, and southeastern Asia, and is caused by a togavirus of the genusAl-phavirus (species Chikungunya virus) transmitted by mosquitoes especially of the genus Aedes—called also chikungunya fever.
The chi-
kungunya virus has been identified in up to 17 different countries in the Caribbean. To date there have been no outbreaks within the United States, but cases have been confirmed in Florida where resi-dents had traveled to the Carib-bean. For a completed listing go to CDC.gov
The chikungunya virus can be contracted if bitten by an infected mosquito carrying the chikun-gunya virus. If bitten, symptoms usually onset within 3-7 days after being bitten and can include, high fevers, joint pains, and headaches. Recommendations for prevention if traveling to a Caribbean island are: use EPA approved insect re-pellants using repellants with DEET are most effective. Wear long sleeves and pants if possible. When choosing accommodations stay in places that utilize screens on both doors and windows and favor using air conditioners.
While our family friend contin-ues to take the necessary steps to aid in her recovery, there is no current medical treatment to treat for the chikungunya virus. To decrease symptoms, the CDC recommends getting plenty of
rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking medications such as ibupro-fen and acetaminophen to help relieve with fever and pain. As with any medical concern always seek the professional recommen-dation of your physician prior to taking any medications.
Here at The Mosquito Au-thority #1198 our goal is to help you enjoy your outdoors. The Mosquito Authority makes back yards worth mowing and front porches worth swinging. We eliminate mosquitoes from your yard so you and your family can actually enjoy it!
To rid mosquitoes from your outdoors, you can reach us at www.BugsBITE.com or 732-998-5019.
Fun Fact: The Asian tiger mosquito is
said to have entered the United States via shipments of used tires from northern parts of Asia in the mid 1980’s.

The Home Affordable Refinance Program
(HARP) is a government-sponsored program
to help homeowners who continue to find
their property values underwater. Originally
set to expire in 2013, the program has been
extended through the end 2015 as valuations
in many markets haven't yet risen to pre-
2007 levels.
HARP was designed to allow borrowers
who owe more than their home is worth the
opportunity to refinance their mortgage into
a lower rate. Now there’s more time to do
so and, for those that qualify, the process is
fast and the costs very low. Often times no
appraisal is needed (that’s $400 right
there).
Mortgages eligible for a HARP refi-
nance must meet the following criteria:
Fannie / Freddie owned
Closed on or before May 31, 2009
Cannot have been refinanced under
HARP previously
LTV greater than 80%
Mortgage must be current, no late pay-
ments in last 6 months, no more than 1
late payment in last 12 months.
Currently, there are more than 2500
HARP eligible mortgages in Monmouth and
Ocean Counties. Are you one of them? Con-
tact us and we’ll review your mortgage situa-
tion and get your refi moving!

Leverage Your Membership with the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce
Here are three ways to leverage your SMCC Membership to better your business and the community.
Membership in the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce provides your business with powerful tools to market your services, reach potential clients, and foster positive economic development in the communi-ties where you live and work. Joining the SMCC is about more than attending General Membership Meetings.
Here are three hot tips for making your membership dollars work for you: 1. Contribute to our newsletter and have your article reach our entire email database..... all for FREE. By writing articles in the quarterly SMCC Southern Exposure Newsletter, your words of wisdom will reach the entire SMCC email database. This is a surefire way to leverage your membership dollars and market your industry know-how to a friendly audience that you will meet again. Articles with an awareness or education focus can be forwarded to clients who need your services, providing endless op-
portunity to work with the existing membership to reach your ideal customer.
2. Hosting a "Business After-Hours" is the lowest cost solution for bringing customers through your door. One of the bene-fits to SMCC membership is the opportunity to host a "business after-hours" gathering that is broadcast to members with plan-ning advice provided by the Chamber. There is simply no more inexpensive way to create advertising, broadcast a message, and
reach a willing and enthusiastic audience. What would you pay to have 30 - 70 potential customers in front of you at once?
3. Joining the SMCC allows the Chamber to flourish and provides an important business incubator for startups and entrepre-neurs. Let's face it, the past two years have proven that we all share the same national economy. Whether your business has 300 employees or you are the "chief cook and bottle washer," a vibrant chamber allows startups the best opportunity to reach cus-tomers, test their business models and grow into success. Your chamber membership is about more than reaching customers.
Even the largest of companies in our area can do their part in supporting the community around them.

May General Membership Meeting The Atlantic Club was host to
the JSCC May General Member-ship Meeting. What a great meet-ing on a beautiful spring day, at-tended by over 40 JSCC members. Our meeting was held in their up-stairs room at the Atlantic Club and the lunch was delicious.

They also provide short seminars that they will host at your place of business to help inform your employees. Give Linda or Cris a call if you would like further information.
The meeting concluded with door prize giveaways. WHY CALL A RESTORATION CONTRACTOR? When you suffer FIRE, SMOKE, WATER, or STORM damage
to your home or business, you have to make some quick decisions.
First, you should do the following –
Call your agent and/or broker to confirm coverage.
Call your carrier to initiate a claim on your policy.
Second, you need to mitigate (minimize) the damage.
If there is a hole in the roof, have it tarped.
If there has been a fire, have windows/doors boarded up
If it is water damage, find and turn off the source.
QUALIFIED A competent local restoration contractor is generally the most qualified
to handle these emergency services because key personnel are always on call 24/7 to handle such claims. They have equipment and supplies stored at
their disposal especially for “after hours” calls.
EMERGENCY SERVICES In the case of water damage, the restoration contractor is uniquely
equipped with water extraction and drying equipment that can be put to use
immediately in order to prevent further damage and mold growth.
SCHEDULING In the case of emergency repairs, the average general contractor is ac-
customed to planning and scheduling their work weeks, usually months, in advance. Restoration contractors are used to starting on very short notice, very often providing emergency services the very same day that the damage
occurs.
CONTENTS The restoration contractor is uniquely qualified to handle emergency
cleaning, moving, and storage of contents through a network of qualified sub-
contractors who also handle this type of work every day.
ESTIMATING All competent restoration firms use estimating software that is accepted
in the insurance industry. The most common software in use is XACTI-MATE. Its use simplifies the process of agreeing on the scope of damages and the cost of repairs. We are comparing “apples to apples” and can pre-
pare the estimate in the detailed format that the carrier likes to see.
UNDERSTANDING INSURANCE-ESE Insurance claim work has some unique issues that most contractors are
not familiar with.
Working with an adjuster, not just the home or business owner.
Ability to help explain coverage or non-coverage.
Dealing with deductibles. Scheduling the mortgage company inspections. They control the pay-
ment process.
I hope that this article has been informative, please call Bob Milisits of

Farrell's Stout & Steak in Point Pleasant Beach was host to the JSCC April General Membership Meeting. Although the weather was rainy and windy it didn’t keep our members away. April’s GMM was a great success! We had almost 50 members and future members in attendance. The upstairs room was a perfect set up for our large group and the
networking was nonstop. This meeting was made possible through the sponsorship of Northeast Sign and Lightning; thank you Gloria, we all
love the cell phone holders you gave to each attendee. Larry McCreanor, President, started our lunch meeting. He spoke about our upcoming events, the excitement of
our rebranding and the positive feedback. He also added how successful our map sales were going. New members had an opportunity to introduce themselves as well as tell our members a little about their business.
Then our members had the opportunity to network with each other and become acquainted by giving a 1-minute summary of their names, businesses and job functions. Our new members for April in attendance were; Colleen Ronan of elements massage, Eddie Griffin of JULY Business Services, Erik Larkin of Mi-Box Central Jersey and Chris Fotache of
Jersey Shore Premiere. We all welcomed them to our Chamber and look forward to working with them in the future. The speaker of the day was Don Warkintin of Dale Carnegie; Don is a training consultant with Dale Carnegie and
always has a wealth of information to share with our members. Don’s topic for today’s meeting was “it’s not who you know, It’s who wants to know you”. He spoke about building relationships that will facilitate the results we are looking to
achieve in our business, the best way to sell ourselves, building a rapport as well as many other useful tips. The meeting concluded with door prize giveaways. Lucky winners were: Coffee Connector coupon winners Jim
Dallas of Envirotactics and Carol Walkner of LIFESPRING Creative Wellness Center. Winners of General Membership Coupons - Joe Thompson of the 30th District Legislative Office and Angela Squicciarini of Angela Squicciarini Photography. OCEAN GROVE, N.J. — If there’s one group that have always stood by their loved ones, it’s grandmas and grandpas. On September 7 people will have the opportunity to Do Something Grand for Grandparents’ Day at the 20th annual Walk for All Ages. National Grandparents’ Day directly relates to the Homes’ focus on seniors. The intergenerational charity event benefits the Fellowship Fund, a financial safety net for the United Methodist Homes’ residents. Walk registration runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Francis Asbury
Manor located at 70 Stockton Avenue in Ocean Grove.
The 107.1FM radio van will be onsite during registration with contests, prizes and music. The walk, a 1.2-mile stroll through the Victorian town, begins at 1 p.m. The day includes games, kite-flying, face painting, prizes, entertainment, tent tours, and more. The: $15.00 per walker registration fee entitles each to a t-shirt, string back pack filled with goodies, lunch and entertainment. Pre-registration is encouraged for both individuals and teams and can be completed at
www.umhnjwalk.org.
For over 107 years the Homes has upheld residents who have outlived their financial resources. Many participants, who have personally contributed and/or raised support from others, feel motivated because of the care given to a family member. The Forget-Me-Not is the official flower of
Grandparents’ Day. In recognition of the national celebration and the walk’s goal, each Homes’ community has made forget-me-not cards available. Donors complete the cards with the names of older adults they wish to honor or memorialize. All cards will be
displayed on September 7.
Joyce Nelson of Westfield, a multi-year walker, offered, “Even when I was much younger, I liked to support seniors, because they have knowledge and give you good advice.” A teen participant remarked, “Grandparents are like angels. They take you under their wings. They pray and watch over
you and will give you most anything!”
The public is invited to register to walk, form a team, become a business partner, share on social media, and donate online at www.umhnjwalk.org or in-person on September 7. The Grand Marshal Partner is Hawks & Company of Deptford, New Jersey. Neptune Township Mayor Michael Brantley; Martin A. Rosica, president of Hawks & Company; and Lawrence Carlson, president and CEO of United
Methodist Homes; will lead walkers as the Grand Marshals.

Francis Asbury Manor to Host 20th Annual Walk on Grandparents’ Day
Do you or a loved one have an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder, or OMD? OMD’s are disorders of the muscles of the face and mouth. These disorders can affect the growth and development of the face, mouth and airway. Incorrect swallowing, muscle function and tongue position can cause imbalance of the head and neck leading to a variety of seemingly unrelated health problems. Orthodontic problems are commonly caused by the pressure of an improperly positioned tongue or “tongue thrust”. A tongue thrust can cause and exasperate bone loss and gum disease, making it unresponsive to traditional treatment. OMD’s can be caused, not only by the forces of the tongue during improper swallowing, but even more by where the tongue sits at rest. If the tongue is resting down and forward, the gentle constant pressure will cause the palate to narrow causing crowding of the teeth and decrease in airway space. Some symptoms and consequences of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders are:
Snoring and sleep apnea Mouth breathing Nail biting Headaches, TMJ pain Crowded teeth Attention issues Elongated face Forward head posture Digestive issues
OMD’s lead to an Myofunctional Therapy can unhealthy bite. A person suffering with any or sometimes all of these symptoms may feel hopeless, spending many years and thousands of dollars seeking treatment and relief only to be met with limited information and solutions. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is a type of muscle therapy dealing with the patterns of oral facial muscles. It is the practice of integrating normal facial muscle function with a neuro-muscular re-patterning using sequenced muscle specific exercises. Myofunctional Therapy can identify and eliminate harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking, pacifier use, lip-licking and cheek-biting in adults and children, possibly reducing the length and intensity of Orthodontic treatment and preventing relapse. Myofunctional Therapy can also establish nasal breathing and lip seal for jaw stability and healthier breathing and posture. Kathy Dowling, RDH, AAPMD has been extensively trained by long time leader in the field, Joy Moeller. Kathy belongs to multiple Integrative Health Care study clubs and contributes to many lectures and informative series to spread the word about this life-changing therapy. Kathy is one of only a few Myofunctional Therapists in New Jersey and she’s right here at the office of Dr. Valerie Barba, DDS in Manasquan. For more information, contact us or visit the AOMT website. To schedule a complimentary consultation, call 732-223-4416.
