About Our SchoolWe've been teaching men, women and children the art of Karate for over 25 years! Our Mission is to “Build Better Bodies & Stronger Minds!” Our core program focuses on instilling Self-Control, Focus, Self-Discipline, Goal Setting, Positive Attitudes and Respect in each student whether they are 3 years old or 73 years old. Learning is the key to all our work. Making the atmosphere safe and enjoyable is our goal. Parents

who have been with us for a while say that Go No Sen Karate is an intricate part of their family life. Students have fun while learning important lessons for life. In a caring environment, with positive role models to enhance personal growth, Students improve at an individual pace and learn respect for themselves and others. Do you believe that karate is just about kicks and punches or winning trophies for display? We don't. At our school we use our ability as teachers and mentors to influence rather than force students into action. This creates self-discipline. By realizing they have choices and the ability, both physical and mental, to deal with challenging situations, our students gain the confidence to overcome them.We are proud to announce our additional location that can cater to those families not close to our main location in Peekskill. Our Cortlandt Manor school which is located in the Parkside mall (Little Sorrentos) on 202 will be open soon for classes and be taught by the professional team of instructors many have grown to love. Most people think karate teaches kids how to fight. That is not the attitude we have. Instead, we teach them the skills and give them the confidence so they don't have to fight! Look for our grand opening special and thanks for all the support. [email protected]

Mentoring Our Future Business Leaders

Last week our scholarship committee met with Charlene Nigro, the Career Exploration Internship Coordinator at Lakeland High School. This meeting evolved from our discussion at the Scholarship awards dinner in July. We learned more details about the programs Ms. Nigro runs, and we discussed ways the Chamber and our members can participate in those programs. Specifically, there are two areas she works on in which we can be involved – an internship program which is designed to give students an on-site experience in a career they wish to explore; and the school’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).

The internship program gives students practical experience so they can evaluate if their chosen fields are appropriate for them. They must fulfill a 200 hour requirement in one or more internships while they attend required classes and seminars which connect what they learn on site with their classroom studies. This program relies upon the availability of business Mentors who can provide these (free) internship opportunities to the students, and coordinate with the school staff to make the experience meaningful and to evaluate the student’s work. While the student may select the career area or job, they may not always be able to find a placement that suits them, so the success of the program depends to a large extent upon the participation of enthusiastic business people as Mentors. It struck us as a great opportunity for our members, as local business people, to both further the goal of community outreach and get the assistance of enthusiastic interns.

The FBLA is a local chapter of a national organization which provides workshops, seminars, and

competitions, to give students the opportunity to learn and to demonstrate their proficiency at public speaking, decision making, customer service interactions, interviewing, and leadership skills. On February 9, 2017, Lakeland will be hosting the annual district–wide competition for FBLA students. There are 6 judged events: Basic Decision Making; Client Service; Impromptu Speaking; Job Interview; Public Speaking I; and Public Speaking II. The winners move on to the Statewide competition in April at Rochester. Judges are needed for these events on February 9th. The events begin at 3:30 pm and run through 6:00 pm with dinner and the awards ceremony to follow.

Ms. Nigro provided us with descriptive materials for both the mentoring program and the upcoming FBLA competition, and we have provided copies to the Chamber office. Anyone who is interested in participating in either program can obtain the written materials from me, from the Chamber office, or from Ms. Nigro, who can be reached at [email protected]. Any questions about the programs should be directed to Ms. Nigro at her email address or by phone at 914-528-0600 (work) or 914-257-7128 (cell).

We urge all of our members to consider participating in one of these programs, and provide real assistance to the students in our community who will be the Chamber members of the future.

The eighth annual Yorktown Festival and Street Fair, survived the rain and produced another great “show!” On behalf of the Chamber, I would like to thank everyone who made a contribution to this event. Thousands of residents came out to see more than 200 vendors that lined Commerce Street, Veterans Road and the Jack DeVito Veteran’s Memorial Field, enjoying the food, live entertainment, face-painting, a hot dog eating contest, a dog costume parade and much more. Festivalgoers also contributed to the American Red Cross blood drive and our seniors once again enjoyed a wonderful luncheon provided by neighborhood restaurants and businesses.Once again a special thank you goes out to our police, volunteer ambulance corps, our fire department and town officials for keeping us safe throughout the day. A special shout out to Al Pisano, foreman of the Yorktown Community and Cultural Center and his crew for a fantastic job keeping everything clean during and after the Festival.Thank you to our Festival sponsors Fidelis Care, Camp Nabby, MCAS, Funtime Amusements, Fieldhome, Northwell Health, Burger King, Signs, Inc., Yorktown News, GHP Realty, Inc., East Coast Auto Storage, Orange Bank & Trust and Northwell Health/Go Health Urgent Care. Your Community Connection…Yorktown Events

Dear Yorktown Chamber of Commerce:Thank you all for what turned out to be a huge day for CSPA! The crowd really loved the singers and Ray said that people were coming to the table during the performance and telling him how much they enjoyed our kids. The half hour slot was perfect and we really enjoyed the day, despite the rain! We actually had a record number of people sign up for lessons, despite the weather! Thank you all for support of our new business. We appreciated being a part of the wonderful, well organized fair.
