28th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Jesus encounters the rich young man in today’s gospel recorded in Mark 10:17-30. He asks a
question of Jesus which we should all consider, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
life?” Mk 10:17. Jesus responds by quoting from the Decalogue. Clearly this should refute those
who say that Jesus abrogated the ten commandments. No, actually Jesus calls us to a higher
interpretation of the commandments, a more demanding approach which says, for example, that
even my anger with my brother breaks the fifth commandment, “thou shalt not kill”–cf. Mt 5:22.
This rich young man alleges that he had observed these commands since his childhood. Then, Jesus looks at him with love
and calls the young man to follow him, after having given up his earthly treasures. But apparently his possessions possessed
him! The rich young man left Jesus and went away sad–cf. Mk 10:22. Perhaps we should reflect upon how attached we are
to our own possessions. We may have many liberties in our nation, but very little freedom because we are so attached to
things. We tend to use people and love things rather than love people and use things! When this happens, we are subject to
an inversion which takes us into an upside down reality that eventually imprisons us. Our consumer based culture tends to
exacerbate the problem with a throw-away mentality as we search for the latest, the newest, the biggest as our “must have”
object to love. Let us pray for discernment to see where this is happening in our lives and for detachment to overcome the
obsession with our things, which cannot bring us enduring happiness.
ST. FRANCIS AWARD
I am pleased to announce that our parishioner, Mrs. Judie Youngman, was awarded the
St. Francis of Assisi award this past Monday at the Cathedral of St. Francis. Judie has served as a coordinator
of our Social Concerns Committee for decades as well as a Communion Minister at Mass. In addition, Judie
serves on our Parish Pastoral Council, bringing her insights from so many years of service to the needy of our
parish community. Thank you, Judie, for touching us with your gentle and gracious service to God and
neighbor here at Annunciation Parish and beyond. Congratulations and God bless you and yours!
ANNULMENTS
There has been a great deal of discussion about declarations of nullity, better known as annulments, during the last year and
the Synod of Bishops on the Family. Some refer to annulments as Catholic divorce, which they are not. In fact, we heard
clearly from Jesus himself that divorce was permitted by Moses only because of the people’s hardness of heart– cf. Mk 10:5.
Jesus calls us to the higher standard of a permanent commitment which is unitive, indissoluble, and procreative. Then what is
the annulment process? It is a process which investigates whether there was anything missing in the marriage commitment
from the very beginning. Rather than a failed marriage, it declares whether there was ever a real marriage to begin with or
not. You might say that there was a ceremony and then children thereafter, so what is there to question. The questions deal
with intentions from the beginning like true freedom to marry, commitment to fidelity, openness to new life and permanence
in the relationship, to name a few. Due to the backlog of cases, many have waited for years to get their case heard and to
receive a decision. Pope Francis has recently offered means by which to streamline the process and render decisions more
expeditiously. Nonetheless, the presumption in all cases is that the marriages are valid unless and until they are proven
otherwise. Please pray for those in the process so that it can be a time of healing and restoration for the dignity of true
marriage and the sacrament of matrimony.
WORLD MISSIONS COLLECTION Next weekend, we will take up the annual collection for the World Missions. Please be generous to the missionaries
and their people as they further establish the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world. Many Catholics are still
enduring persecution and suffering simply because they are Christians in a hostile environment. Let us show them
our support through prayer and sacrifice in this collection.
PRIESTS CONVOCATION Remember your priests this week as we gather in Taos for the annual convocation of priests. You will be
remembered in the Masses there as we trust in your prayers at the services here. Our retired, visiting priests will be
offering all the Masses here during the week.
PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Parish is a people of living faith rooted in the Gospel,

FAMILY CENTERED RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Dear Parishioners,
For the next two weeks I am changing the usual format of my
bulletin page in order to publish two accounts of the pilgrimages
that the Perez family and the Seabrooks family (10/18) made to
Philadelphia. Each family brought back an inspiring message of
love for all us from Pope Francis. Enjoy!
