Ehan- I liked when the fire fighter was wearing his mask so that he can breathe if there is a fire. Jaii- I liked when the fire fighters taught me how to stop drop and roll when your clothes are on fire. Xander- I liked it when they showed me all of their gear. They showed the mask, helmet, gloves, top and boots.

Year 5 News

The year 5 students are busy investigating animal adaptations and how changing the physical conditions of an environment impacts the growth and survival of living things. Last week students planted seeds in dirt, sand and peat and are waiting for the seeds to sprout to determine which is the best growing environment. “My hypothesis is that the plant will grow best in the dirt,” predicts Angel in 5C. Shrey from 5C disagrees with Angel he believes that “the plant will grow best in the peat.” “I enjoy growing plants and I haven’t done it in a very long time,” says Omy 5C.

This week students are investigating how blubber keeps arctic animals warm. Animals develop structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations to help them survive in the environment in which they live. One of the structural adaptations that helps animals to

survive in cold environments is blubber. The experiment required students to use copha as blubber to see if the ice cold water was warmer then without the layer of fat. “My hands were numb,” exclaimed Jaxon, 5C. “My hands turned pink,” said Emily and Sam, 5C. Students placed their uncovered hand and then later covered hands in the icy water. Ava determined that “it was warmer with the glove on.”

Fun in the Artroom

This term we have focused on completing grade 1 and 2 ceramic projects and developing threads and textiles skills in Visual Arts. Here are a few images of all the fun we have been having during this term. We are also looking for some parent helpers to help us set up and organise items for the Art exhibition at the “Big Day Out” in Term 3, so please come by and see us before or after school to put your name down as a parent volunteer.

Thank you, Ms.Nishani and Ms.Cindy

Years 3 & 4 Hooptime On Wednesday June 12th 36 students from Years 3 & 4 took part in the Basketball Victoria Hooptime Competition. We had students in the Rookie and Future Stars Competitions. The Rookies teams played 5 games and all had several wins. The Future Stars made it through to the Finals and were narrowly defeated. All students were brilliant on the day and are to be congratulated on their efforts.

Primary Choir Miss Miller and the choir have been hard at work practicing their singing ready for their performance at assembly this Friday. The choir consists of students from year 2-6, and they rehearse every Thursday lunchtime in Miss Miller's Music Room. They sing warm ups to extend their vocal range and learn how to use their singing voice to its full potential. Miss Miller will be looking for more members in term 3 for an exciting project. So if you think you would like to join, come along and have a sing on Thursday lunch times.

Grade 6 Immigration Musesum During Term 2, Grade 6 students have focused on migration as part of their History Unit. On Tuesday the 28thof May, students took the train to the city to an excursion to the Melbourne Immigration Museum. The Immigration Museum tells the stories and perspectives of people who have migrated to Australia and reasons why they migrated. Migration to Australia in the 1900s contributed to Australia's economic and social development. Migrants have made a significant contribution to the development of Australian society. Upon our arrival, students were invited to uncover the personal settlement and migration stories contained in a collection of suitcases. Students then worked in teams to unpack the suitcases and develop a profile of the person whose belongings they discover. At the end of the session teams presented their findings to the class. All students are asked to reflect on their own stories and think of an item that might best represent their personal story. Students were then given the opportunity to explore the museum and discover why people might have migrated to Victoria, where they settled and how they started a new life here. After visiting the museum, we made our way down to Sandridge Bridge. The bridge consists of 128 glass screens, which represents a community of more than 1000 people. Students used this opportunity to search when their ancestors might have migrated. We then took the train back to school.

Grade 6 Winter Sport Gala On Friday the 7thof June the Grade 6s participated in the Winter Sports Gala. There were a number of sporting events such as Netball, AFL, Hockey, Soccer and Tee-ball. After many weeks of training, everyone was excited to compete against other schools.

Everyone demonstrated excellent teamwork, behaviour, sportsmanship and effort throughout the day. Most importantly everyone had lots of fun! Well done Manor Lakes! We would like to thank Anthea for organising the event, coaches for helping us train and secondary students for helping out on the day.

Grade 6 Matter Matters Incursion This term, Grade 6 students have been focusing on Chemical Sciences. On Tuesday the 18th& Wednesday the 19thof June, the Grade 6s participated in a ‘Matter Matters’ incursion, where they continued to explore the 3 states of matter using the magic of dry ice, everlasting bubble fountains and cool chemical fire extinguishers. Students were given the opportunity to categories a number of items as solids, liquids and gases using their observable properties. They then conducted a variety of science experiments which saw students compare physical changes with chemical changes, learn about different chemical reactions, and how they can result in the production of new chemicals.

good night- konbanwa goodbye- sayonara Prep students have started learning how to read and write one of the Japanese alphabets named ‘hiragana.’ They have been practising singing this Japanese alphabet song to help them memorise all of the hiragana characters: https://fuse.education.vic.gov.au/Resource/LandingPage?ObjectId=05ea6bd2-fbe7-43c2-8e0c-a0bece73bc4c&SearchScope=Teacher I was able to borrow Japanese teaching resources from the Languages and Multicultural Resource Centre in Carlton. During Term 2, students were given the opportunity to dress up in traditional ‘happi coats’ which are usually worn during festivals in Japan.

I borrowed some big books from the library which the students really enjoyed. One of the books was a traditional Japanese folk tale named, ‘The Fisherman called Urashima Taro.’ Some of the students enjoyed this book so much that they asked me to read the book again after I had just finished reading it to them!
