Dear Parents, I do hope this edition of Silver Leaves finds you and your family all in good health, my thoughts are with those families who are facing some of the nasty colds and viruses that are going around at the moment. I hope that we see you all well again soon. In amidst all the wintery weather we have been having, the teachers are continuing to provide such interesting and engaging main lessons for their children. Last week the Koorrdejenangin Class visited the wonderful Kelmscott School Farm where they spent the day learning about the farm animals and life on a farm. The school received a wonderful email from the School Farm after this visit, commending the care and compassion shown by all the children and the adults who were there. The Wayfarers Class stepped back into a rich part of WA history with a visit to Peninsula Farm this week. These experiences are a valuable complement to the main lessons and it is so wonderful that the Silver Tree parents support these excursions so eagerly by returning permission slips so promptly and being so generous with their time and driving expertise! Next week is our school photo day. Parents would have received an email explaining that this year there will be some differences in the way ordering can be done. This year parents can wait until the photos have been taken, and then log onto the secure website to view the photo proofs before ordering. Please contact the school office if you have any queries. Next Thursday is the last day of school for children for Term 3. There is no school for children on Friday as all of the staff will be attending WA Steiner PD Day at Perth Waldorf School with their colleagues from all of the other Steiner schools in WA. This is an important day of professional development for all of our staff and a unique opportunity for our teachers to meet with their colleagues. NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM ___________________________________________________________________________________ EARLY CHILDHOOD CHATTER Spring really does feel as though it is arriving. Thank you to all the parents and children who bring us beautiful bunches of flowers which seem to have sprung even though the rain pours on. Thank you also for gifts of surplus fruit from your trees for the kindergartens, as well as useful cuttings and seedlings and fruit trees for our gardens. The children have helped to plant them and all this late rain will have given all the new plantings a good start. EARLY CHILDHOOD SPRING FESTIVAL Thursday 26th September 11.00am to 12.30 pm. All Early Childhood families are welcome. Please arrive at 11 and make your way to your child’s kindergarten with a picnic morning tea for your family. Playgroup families please join us in one or other of the kindergarten playgrounds. We start the Festival by making flower garlands, and this will be followed by a blessing before the picnic morning tea. Once we have all eaten, the adventure begins. Join us for one last bush gathering. The Festival will end at about 12.30 and school, and indeed the term finishes then for all children, including Rainbows. Families with Primary children will then be able to move onto their Festival. The children spend the weeks leading up to it preparing for it, so it is an exciting time for them. Please make every effort to attend. It is wonderful if someone special to them can be present on the day for it if you are unable to attend. We wish you all a joyful holiday.

KOORRDEJENANGIN NEWS The Best Excursion Ever by Alicia Scallan - On Wednesday we went to Kelmscott School Farm and my favourite things to do was cuddling the baby rabbits. We also got to see a horse. It started to rain and then we went back to school. The School Excursion by Jensen Adams - On Wednesday we went on an excursion and we fed the sheep. After morning tea, we made scones and then we held baby chickens. The ‘Smelly’ Excursion by Sam Casey - On Wednesday we went on a big bus to Kelmscott School Farm. When we got off the bus, Farmer Norm welcomed us. First we hand fed the sheep and then it rained and we went into the barn. The worst part was when we went into the milking barn and there was poo everywhere! The best part was when we held the chicks and fed the sheep. The chicks were very cute. I also loved the woolly sheep. Chick-tastic by Aria McKenna - Kelmscott School farm is a great place. Now let’s talk about chickens. We got to cuddle the chicks! Lots of my friend’s chicks were trying to get away but my chick was falling asleep! When we were looking at the tractor shed it started pouring! We ran as fast as we could to get back to the barn! We had a great day! Our Excursion by Kael Lottering - On Wednesday we went to the Kelmscott School Farm and my favourite thing to do there was feeding the chickens with our feet. We then went to the pig’s paddock. On the way back I found a full sherbet and a chocolate. Back at the farm we milked the cows and it was very stinky! The Best Excursion by Amelie Whitehorn - We went to Kemscott School Farm and my favourite thing was cuddling the rabbits and I held a white one. I also held a baby chick and it fell asleep on me. We hand fed the sheep. I milked a cow. We went into the chicken pen and we put chicken food on our shoes and they ate it off. The farmer was called Farmer Norm. The pigs were funny - so were the goats. I saw the horses. Norm told a lot of jokes. I had a great day. We also made scones and they were delicious. I hope we go there again. It was the best excursion ever. Sconlishes by Charlotte Southall - On Wednesday we went to Kelmscott School Farm ad my favourite bit was patting the bunnies and cuddling the baby chickens. We made scones and they were very yummy. We saw thousands of animals and there were: rabbits, cows, sheep, chickens, horses, goats, pigs, fish, turkeys and ducks.

KOORRDEJENANGIN NEWS cont…. Thank you to Farmer Len How wonderful to have a real farmer visit our classroom and talk about his two large farms near Bridgetown. Reign's grandfather Len took time out of his busy schedule to share photos and stories about the many years he has spent on his land and the great care he takes of his animals. The children listened intently and with great interest to Len's descriptions of his dams, trees, fences, calves, bulls, machinery and the joy of farm life. Thank you Len for sharing your knowledge and wisdom - our main lesson on farming and gardening has come even more alive! Anna Brindal

WAFARERS NEWS The Class 4 children have been steadily striving towards completing their cross stitch bags this year. It is a project that certainly demands they employ their intellect, problem solving, will as well as their creativity. As you can see, some stunning results are emerging! Julia Humphreys

SILVER TREE GARDENING AND ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE NEWS MINI BUSY BEE - Due to the weather forecasted to continue to be windy, wet and stormy on Friday, the GEMS mini busy bee will be postponed until Friday 27th September. Everyone is welcome. Please RSVP to Bronwyn Scallan on [email protected] by Tuesday 24th September. OUR BUSH TUCKER GARDEN - You will have no doubt already noticed we now have a “snake” living in our garden. GEMS members, with the help of parents, have created their own unique bush tucker garden with the assistance of a

OUR BUSH TUCKER GARDEN cont…. Partnership, Acceptance, Learning, Sharing (PALS) grant from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs. The aim of a PALS grant is that through project work students expand their knowledge of traditional Indigenous culture and lifestyle. Dedicated parents have designed and built a raised garden bed in the shape of the Wagyl, (the Noongar Rainbow Serpent). Like in the Noongar Dreamtime Story, our Wagyl is slithering from east to west through the landscape. Our Wagyl emerges from a stand of bush tucker plants (the forest) and slides over a hill (the Darling Range), making its way to the Jane Brook and onto the Indian Ocean. On Friday morning, Class 1 helped finish mulching and placing rocks on the Wagyl’s body and Class 2/3 had the honour of planting our bush tucker species, as part of their fortnightly gardening classes. 14 species of bush tucker plants have been planted along the Wagyl’s body and at its tail, and in front of the yurt and rainwater tanks in the primary playground. Species are locally endemic wherever possible, all having nutritional, medicinal and/or cultural significance to aboriginal people. Signs detailing the aboriginal uses of each bush tucker species have been developed for identification and educational purposes. Additional signs have been produced to identify existing bush tucker species already growing on the school site. Silver Tree would like to acknowledge the traditional Noongar owners of this land and custodians of the knowledge used in this brochure and the South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL) for their permission to replicate the information from their publication, Bush Tucker Plants for your Garden. Significantly, our Wagyl is a hugelkultur garden bed. Hugelkultur is a funny-sounding German word, which roughly translates to "mound culture". It is growing in popularity as a permaculture gardening and farming technique around the world. Hugelkultur beds are created by mounding soil, compost and manure over large amounts of tree trunks, branches and other woody debris, and planting your garden on top of that mass. The wood base of a hugelkultur bed acts like a sponge for moisture deep within, which means we will need little to no irrigation once the bed has been established. The costs are minimal as fallen branches from the school site have been selected. Hugelkultur beds create healthy soil environments by utilising wood that would otherwise just rot. After the wood decomposes, it will release nitrogen and the raised bed will not require the application of fertiliser. A special naming ceremony for the bush tucker garden will be held at a later date. We have been unable to source a Lepidosperma gladiatum (Sword Sedge); Acacia acuminata (Jam Wattle); Thysanotus patersonii (Fringe Lily) or a Haemodorum spicatum (Bloodroot). If you know where we can source these species or have either of these seedlings growing in your backyard, or a tree we can easily transplant that you are willing to donate, please contact Bronwyn on [email protected] Much appreciation goes to Charles Snelleksz-Mathelot for his creativity and for sharing his expertise in building hugelkultur beds and to Charles and Crystal for donating and installing reticulation; to Marijanna Smith for her ongoing passion for this project and for offering to carve a beautiful sign for the garden once it is named; to Donna Bieundurry for planning a welcome ceremony and for the much earned and appreciated cups of tea; to Jorg Unseld, Charles and Karen Brown for their assistance in planning and planting; to Fiona Blackham and Trudi Whitehorn for their assistance in procuring bush tucker species; and to and to all our wonderful helpers for their enthusiasm and hard work; Robyn, Wendy, Alison, Taryn, Carol, Sheaoka, Sabina and everyone else who joined our work crew, and to Dion and his helpers who made beautiful kites with our children so we could dedicate our time and skills to creating our Wagyl. Thank you all for bringing our vision to life, Bronwyn Scallan (GEMC).

Our volunteers have grown fruit and vegetables for fund raising since the early 1970’s. We avoid pesticides whenever possible, only using organically acceptable recipes if the natural predators are being overwhelmed. You can find us at the Silver Tree market each Thursday of the school term. Alternatively, our produce is available at our property, which is located approx. 2 ½ km down Mundaring Weir Road from Great Eastern Hwy. We are 171, or look for the large sign set in from the road on the left hand side. Our specialty is delicious apples and pears, with a selection of summer vegetables. Also, we have a large range of beautiful homemade jams, marmalades, chutneys, sauces and pickles. We can be contacted on 9295 1339 or at [email protected]
