From the President

Bonnie Ambrose, Guild President

It is hard to imagine that this is July. What a year! So much has happened since you asked me to lead the Guild. Just to name a few changes in my life, I • married a terrific guy, Don

• gained a precious grandson, Sawyer,

• a new stepson, Brad, and his lovely bride, Chelsea (only three weeks into the marriage),

• and a beautiful new stepdaughter, Kristin, and

• moved to a new home in Pilot Point

Lots of changes…I’m so glad I can count upon the Guild and the friends I’ve made… a steadfast organization that gives back to the community and to its members.

The Board will be meeting at the end of June to discuss the ideas you put forth in the survey. Thank you for your thoughts and ideas. We will be looking for ways to improve our meetings, programs and community outreach. We know we need to find ways to communicate better and provide you with opportunities to connect with other members. We will also discuss how to offer volunteer opportunities in which members of all ages and circumstances can participate.

Thank you for your continued support. Remember to renew your membership, enjoy your July, and plan on being at the August meeting.

On another note, I included a picture of Ms. Bella Rose. Bella is one of the therapy dogs trained by Therapy Pals. The organization was one of our Miniature Quilt Auction applicants in the summer of 2013. While not chosen, Guild members were able to help the group acquire some of the equipment they were hoping to acquire via auction proceeds. This picture made me smile. Hope it does the same for you!

Sunshine and Shadow

Cindy Matthew’s husband was recently hospitalized with pneumonia.

Michelle Wirth, friend of many QGD members, died June 4th after a 29-year battle with cancer.

Suzanne Hardebeck was featured in the July edition of Victoria Magazine along with her patriotic quilts.

Barbara Hartman received 2nd Place for “Somewhere” in the Small Wall Quilts – Fiber Art category at the AQS Show in Paducah

Life Membership Award Shirley Fowlkes Stevenson

Shirley is not a Charter Member or a past major officer that we know of, but has been a member for a long time. (She describes herself as “older than dirt.”)

She coordinated the making of a huge appliqué quilt honoring the Texas Sesquicentennial. Not only did she design the quilt, but she offered appliqué classes to Guild members who wanted to learn the skill so that they could help with the quilt. (Mind you, at this time, quilts made for Guild fundraising were hand quilted!) She coordinated promotion of the quilt, carting it along with heavy hanging poles around in a wheelbarrow. The quilt was also photographed, so that posters could be sold to the general public. The funds raised from auctioning that quilt, selling the posters and a raffle quilt made with leftover blocks became the seed money for our Endowment Fund!

Shirley had a busy pattern design business, with designs that were subsequently picked up by Butterick. After residing for many years in the Hill Country, she now lives in Sherman with her husband, Henry and attends Dallas Guild meetings as often as possible.

Membership Dues

Have you noticed the annual membership dues form on page 18?

Perhaps you wondered why dues went up. Well, they didn’t really go up – it just looks that way.

Many years ago, we implemented a “late fee” for people joining or rejoining after the September Guild meeting, because if we could not send their membership packet with the bulk rate mailing in October, it costs us around $5.00 to mail the packet first class.

However, people didn’t understand the late fee. Sometimes we got it, sometimes we didn’t. But we were still having to pay the cost of mailing. And the Board felt it was important for the fee structure to be easier to understand.

SO…

We flipped it, and made the year-round dues five dollars higher, but implemented a five dollar “early-bird discount” if they are paid on or before the September Guild meeting night.

When you read this newsletter, it will still be June. You have a little over two months to mail your form and appropriate payment to Marcia Hampton, or to remember to bring same to either the August or September meeting. Chris Becker should be available to run credit card payments on request at both of those meeting nights.

If you are a life member, don’t forget that despite the fact that your dues are now free, you still need to send a completed form to verify that we have the correct contact information.

Programs (Continued from Page 1)

October 1, 2015 Guild Meeting speaker – Kathy Schmidt "From Tradition to Rule Breaker" Kathy will present a slide show of quilts from traditional to her “Rule-Breaking” Quilts. She is the author of Rule Breaking Quilts.

Friday, October 2 Workshop Rule Breakers---Build a Scrappy Village

Your unique improv blocks will be used to create a scrappy little village. Learn straight line improv piecing, while trying to put a dent in your personal scrap pile. Design, color choices and construction methods, including quilt-as-you-go, will be a big part of this class. Your village will NOT look like the sample, but will be completely and uniquely YOU.

Student Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Saturday, October 3 Workshop Rule Breakers –Improv with a Modern Slant No need to be dependent on patterns–learn how to do free-form piecing to create your own unique designs. Think ‘modern’ with lots of solid colors, low volume prints and asymmetrical gridwork. Your quilt will NOT look like the sample. We’ll discuss contrast and color value and learn how to construct a quilt with different sized blocks. Once you learn the basics, your quilts can always be pattern free and any size you’d like.

Guild Meeting speaker – Becky Goldsmith, “A Practical Approach to Color” “You walk around with your eyes open - but how much do you really see? It's amazing what you can learn about color just by paying attention! I'll share with you what I've figured out about color over the years and how you can use this knowledge in your own quilts.”

Becky Goldsmith is best known as being half of the Piece O’Cake Designs team. She and her partner, Linda Jenkins, started Piece O'Cake in 1994. Since then they have published more than 30 books and hundreds of patterns, including 7 Blocks of the Month. They continue to work together on books and patterns. Becky has recently finished writing a book on her own, The Quilter’s Practical Guide to Color.

The 35th

Anniversary Edition of the

Dallas Quilt Show is only

about 39 weeks away!

Judy Kriehn, VP-Show [email protected]

Mark your calendar: March 11-13, 2015

Celebrating 35 Years of

Dallas Quilting

Categories in Judged Show The Entries Committee and Judging Committee have had their post-show joint meeting to discuss possible changes to categories and rules.

The biggest (and probably the hardest) decision for this year is that the 35th anniversary show will be the swan song for the Garments/Wearable Art category. This was a very popular category from the late 1980’s until the 2000’s, with the Fairfield Fashion Shows/Bernina Fashion Shows at the Houston Quilt Festival inspiring many artists to create fabulousness with needle and thread. However, after the last presentation of the Bernina Fashion Show, interest has waned. The wearable category has even been discontinued by IQA in their annual show.

There are other quilting-related artforms that probably deserve to have their day in the sun if interest levels continue to grow as they have over the past 2-3 years. SO… If you have ever thought you’d like to enter the garment category, or have been contemplating entering again, this will be your LAST CHANCE.

The decision was also made to change the name of “First Quilt” to more accurately reflect the purpose of the category – that of “First Show Entry.” We really have no way of determining whether someone is really entering the first bit of quilting attempted, but what we DO want is for our members to be entering the show. We will also be moving this category back into the Artisan Division, but keep it as a two-person category, since many new quilters prefer to engage professional assistance for the quilting part of the equation.

Speaking of “First Show Entries,” it never ceases to amaze me how many people are intimidated by our show. Yeah, there are some mind-blowing quilts displayed, but a large number of those amazing quilts were created by fellow Guild members. And there was a time when they too entered a quilt for the first time. It’s true that the odds of winning an award are tough the first time out, but they’re kinda tough your second, third, and ninety-ninth time too. And there’s nothing to say you won’t win an award, either. Ask Chris Becker. I publicly challenged her to enter the show (she insists on referring to my tactics as “public shaming”) but her quilt earned a big fluffy ribbon. And she didn’t even enter it as a “First Quilt”

No, you won’t get a judges critique on your entry, but if you volunteer to be a quilt angel, you can eavesdrop on comments made by passersby about various quilts in the show, and learn a lot that way. Like flat versus waving quilts. Appliqué techniques. Good and bad color choices. Value. Mismatched points. Thread tension.

Every quilt you undertake is a learning process. Some are destined to die as a UFO, but you still learned something – even if the lesson is that you hate that pattern/technique/color combination. And the ones that make you proud? You should be sharing them with your fellow quilters by entering a local show. If not the Dallas show, perhaps Plano. Or Mesquite or Irving or Ellis County.

Show chair theme In case you’ve been hiding under a quilt or just not reading your newsletter, the theme is “Words or Letterforms.” How does that translate to a quilt? Alphabet quilts. Quilts with quotes or sayings embroidered, written, pieced or printed. Quilts with images that resemble words or letters. Me, I’ve been collecting fabric for mine, and am about to start. I’ll be combining my theme from last year (funny) with the theme this year (in my case, letterforms). And it has a working title also. I hope you’ve started your entries too.

Committee positions I’ve had a few positions on the committee come open, and had a few people express interest. But, all the committees can probably use worker bees, so if you’ve thought the show committee might be a fun way to be a guild volunteer, let me know. [email protected] and/or [email protected] or text me at 214-534-0664. If you don’t hear back, please try again. I get so much spam, I sometimes miss the REAL email in my in-box…

QGD Endowment Grants Awarded

Marcia Hampton, Endowment Committee

Chair

The Grant Program of the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas is administered by the Guild’s Endowment Committee. The committee includes Mary Masal, Michelle Sauerbrei, Cindy Matthews, Holly Laughlin, Cathy Bryan and Marcia Hampton. This year there were six applications to be reviewed by the committee. The following projects were approved for funding:

Oregon Quilt Project Steering Committee The Oregon Quilt project is dedicated to documenting, collecting and preserving information about Oregon quilts and quilt makers. This multi-year, statewide documentation will survey all parts of Oregon. The intent is to enter Oregon’s quilt findings in the existing state project listings The Quilt Index, in the national database of indexes, books and exhibitions. The goal is to compile the information on the quilts and have digital images that will conform to Quilt Index’s standards for submission to the online database.

San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles – Collection Digitization QGD funds will be used to capture high quality digitized images of approximately 250 of the museum’s most important quilts, publish these images on the website in a highly accessible format and to use the images to enhance visitor experience in the galleries. At the same time the IT team will design and build the collection image database; images will be uploaded as they are produced. Marketing and educational staff will develop

projects to utilize the new assets, including online virtual exhibitions. This is Phase I of the project. The second phase, for which the museum will seek additional funding from IMLS and the James Foundation, will result in the photography of the remainder of the collection. Ongoing costs, such as web hosting and database maintenance will be paid for by the museum.

Museum of Texas Tech University – Acquisition of Research Cotton Sack Collection QGD funds will make possible the acquisition of a research collection of 4,200 printed feed sack swatches, 518 cotton sacks, 5 quilts made from printed feed sacks, 120 household items made from printed feed sacks and 41 clothing items made from printed feed sacks. The goal of the project is to take a research collection of cotton sacks, which were tremendously important to quilters particularly at the beginning of the 20th century, from private hands and place it in the public sphere. The owner of the collection has agreed to donate 41% of the value of the collection. Interest in acquiring the cotton sack collection has been extensive in the Lubbock area and the fund raising efforts have been grass roots. Partners in the cotton growers industry have been working on raising funds to meet the goal set for individual donations. The South Plains Quilt Guild of Lubbock is making a raffle quilt, and the proceeds will go to the acquisition fund. The request is for the purchase of the collection; the costs of storing, interpreting and exhibiting the collection and sharing it with the public and researchers will be funded through the normal museum operating budget.

Notes from a Curator Marian Ann J.

Montgomery, Ph.D., Curator of

Clothing and Textiles, Museum of

Texas Tech University

It was with trepidation that I opened the e-mail from Marcia Hampton I received late at night during the last week of May. Would the funds be granted?

Funding for the acquisition of an important research collection on the printed cotton bags that were the building blocks of so many quilts across Texas and our nation had been requested and was essential. I feel sure everyone on my floor at that hotel in San Antonio where I was attending the Costume Society symposium, heard me jumping and yelling with joy when I read that the grant had been funded by the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas. The vote of confidence by the Dallas Guild will propel us forward to complete the fund raising.

As a new Curator I arrived without any funds for acquisitions and so have had to work from scratch to develop relationships for funding. Many individuals have stepped forward with donations, but the funding provided by the Helena Hibbs Endowment, combined with anticipated funds raised by a raffle quilt made by one of the Lubbock area Guilds, will ensure the success of this endeavor. We anticipate having all funds in hand by June 1, 2016 and bringing the collection to Lubbock in plenty of time to mount a major exhibition of feed sacks and their role in quilts and clothing in rural America in 2018.

It is wonderful to combine the efforts of the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas and the South Plains Quilt Guild of Lubbock to bring this research collection of quilt making materials and quilts to Texas. Thank you all for your support.

New Acquisition… Efforts to raise funds for the Research Collection of Cotton Sacks have resulted in some very nice donations of objects including this printed feed sack from the Standard Milling Company with its original wrapper. It was given as a wedding gift to Mrs. Robert Fehleison when she married into the family that owned the Standard Milling Co in Lubbock, TX, so that she could use the fabric to make curtains for their new home.

Community Service—CFK

Mary Howard, 1st VP—Community Service

Theda Scroggin is June’s Covers for Kids winner. She will receive a voucher for a free Guild workshop of her choice. Congratulations Theda and thank you for all the tops you lovingly create for Covers for Kids!

In June we gave Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center 13 quilts, Ronald McDonald House 8 quilts, and Vogel Alcove 12 quilts. In guild year 2013-2014, we gave 241 quilts to these three organizations. With two months to go we have hit 400 quilts for guild year 2014-2015. WOW! Thanks to each and every one of you who has helped! You are making a difference in young lives.

Mark your calendar for our next CFK workshops: June 20, July 18 and August 29 at Hancock’s at Firewheel (on Highway 78/Lavon Dr.). We start at 9:30 and end about 4:00 or 4:30, but feel free to come for all day or just for a few hours. We generally add borders and make quilt backs.

Remember your CFK challenge quilt is due back by the August meeting if you want it to be included in the contest. Good luck to all!

Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center Highlights At our June meeting, we had Dianna Smoot and Luis Acuña, representatives from the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, share with us how our quilts are used at the center. For privacy reasons, they cannot share pictures of the clients but here are pictures they did share of how some of the quilts are used to warm the rooms and add comfort. Over 4,000 children and their families have found help at DCAC this year. DCAC serves all of Dallas County.

Dianna also shared with us a heartwarming story of one little 8 year old girl who was so thrilled when she found out she really could keep her quilt, taking it with her when she left DCAC.

In September we will hear about the Ronald McDonald House.

If you are interested in a tour of our three CFK charities: Vogel Alcove, Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, and the Ronald McDonald House, email Mary Howard at [email protected] with the days and times that generally work for you. Think in terms of this fall.

Guild Library News

Marte Keller, Library Committee

Improving Your Piecing Skills Many of us took a class or two in the early days of our quilting career. We learned the basics and then we took off doing our own thing our way. Our skills gradually improved as we made more quilts. One way to take a big step forward is to take one of the speaker workshop classes. They are terrific. Another way is to check out some of the excellent instructional books in your Guild Library.

If you want lessons on precision sewing, there’s no better book than Sally Collin’s: Mastering Precision Piecing. For minis it’s her: Small Scale Quiltmaking.

Ruth McDowell’s Piecing Workshop is an excellent,

comprehensive, how-to book. Her step-by-step visual guide teaches 5 unique piecing techniques.

A long time leader in the quilting world, Harriet Hargrave has produced a series of 4 volumes: Quilter’s Academy: A Skill Building Course in Quiltmaking-- Freshman through Senior Year. Each book concentrates on specific techniques as you build skills and work through projects.

For these and many other books on various quilting skills stop by the Guild Library table and we’ll help you find them - in August. The Library is open from about 6:30 until just before the speaker’s presentation. Or check on the QGD website:

www.quiltersguildofdallas.org -> Events & Links -> Library Book Listings

If you’ve thought about volunteering to help out the Guild, we’re looking for 1 or 2 people to step up and be the next Guild librarians. No previous experience required. It’s easy, fun and doesn’t take a lot of time.

Enjoy the extra month with your books and Happy Reading!

Join us the weekend of August 14-16, 2015 for a chance to work on your own projects while visiting with other crafty folks. You do not have to be a member of the guild to attend so feel free to share this invitation with your friends and put a group together to sit together (generally groups of two, four, or five).

How does it work? Each attendee will have a 6’ table to spread out, and you can leave your projects overnight if you wish. The space has a kitchen with refrigerator and microwave if you want to bring your own food, or there are lots of restaurants in the area.

Why would you want to do this? Retreats are a great opportunity to get some serious creative work done without all the distractions that interrupt you at home (family members, pets, television, chores, etc.) You can also be inspired by the projects other attendees are working on and when you find yourself in need of suggestions or opinions to get your project to the next level, you have a pool of opinions right there to help you out. You’d be surprised how much better a project might become if you solicit suggestions.

Minutes from the June 4

General Meeting Mary Jane Burton,

Guild Secretary

At 6:30, prior to the general meeting, Linda Bartley’s lesson of the month was how to do a pieced inset circle. Not appliquéd, fused or top-stitched—but pieced! Those attending the lesson learned how to sew a perfect fabric circle into a perfect circular hole in the background. At 7:20 pm, the meeting was brought to order by President Bonnie Ambrose who asked the members the question, “What is the one thing you’re going to get accomplished this summer?” Peggy Cord, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, presented the slate of officers for 2015 – 2016:

President – Bonnie Ambrose 1stVP Community Service - Mary Howard 2ndVP Ways and Means - Lut DeMeulder 3rdVP Programs & Workshops - Marcia Wood 4thVP Membership - Martha Smith 5thVP Finance - Glynnis Wood 6thVP Show - Judy Kriehn 7thVP Education - Linda Bartley Secretary - Pat Aldrich

Ballots had been handed out to members as they entered the room and Peggy requested that they be filled out. One guild member requested nominations from the floor, but she was reminded that nominations had been requested at last month’s meeting and there being none the slate stood as presented. Bonnie continued the meeting by presenting Donna King and Marilyn Dickson with a Yellow Rose Award and Shirley Stevenson was presented with a Life Membership Award. We were reminded that there will be no July meeting and we will hear more about the Board Retreat at a later time. Judy Kriehn, Show Chair, reported that the 2016 Special Exhibits will include quilts from the Pilgrim/Roy collection. She also announced that Shirley Stevenson will have a retrospective exhibit at the 2016 show. The floor plan for the show is being tweaked and 2016 will be the “swan song” for the wearables category. The name of the First Quilt category is being changed to First Show Entry. The mailing and handling fee to enter the show is being increased. Instead of $1 total for all quilts entered the fee is being raised to $1 PER quilt. Martha Wolf is her Co-Chair for 2016. There are several openings on the Show Committee for whoever is interested. Donna King, Mini Quilt Auction co-chair, announced that brochures are now available at the membership table. Mary Howard, Community Service Chair, introduced Diana Smoot of the Dallas Children’sAdvocacy Center. Ms Smoot spoke about the Center, giving us a good understanding of who they are and what they do. She told us that our quilts make the Center’s work more personal and described how happy a little girl was when she received a quilt and was to be able to keep it. The Center really appreciates us and the work we do. Mary announced that there was one quilt kit remaining at the Community Service table and asked if there was anyone who would like to take it home. She also told us there were Black Bear fabric kits to make a quilt for the 2016 show. Your

money will be refunded when you bring back a finished quilt. The winner this month of the free guild program workshop voucher is Theda Scroggins. The next Covers For Kids workshops will be June 30, July 18, and August 29. 15 quilts were given to the Dallas Advocacy Center 12 quilts were given to Vogle Alcove 4 quilts were given to Ronald McDonald House. Mary Howard then changed hats to announce Sunshine and Shadows. Cindy Matthews husband is back in hospital with pneumonia and Michelle Wirth, friend of the guild, died today ending her 29 year battle with cancer. Marte Keller and Martha Smith, Librarians announced that after a term of seven years they are ready to call it quits and are looking for replacements. Please contact one of them if you are interested in the job. Donna Petrick, TAQG representative, announced that this is the last chance to buy lunch tickets, pins, and pre-raffle tickets. Kauffman County sold 20 pre-raffle tickets - we should sell as many if not more. There were four people who brought Bring and Brag. After a short break the meeting resumed at 8 pm. Margaret Wolf, Programs and Workshops, drew our attention to the raffle quilt from Cedar Hill Quilt Guild and then introduced our speaker, Jan Krentz. Jan had kindly rescheduled from February 2014, when a snowstorm forced us to cancel our meeting. Her lecture, "The Great Star Review,” was an historic look at traditional eight-point star designs, ranging from lone stars and hunter stars to the new diamond quilt designs. She gave us a presentation combining slides with a trunk show of beautiful quilts, featuring quilts from Jan’s collection and the many books she has written. Following the program ten door prizes were given out. They were donated by the following: The Fabric Affair Happiness is Quilting The Old Craft Store Quilt Asylum Quilt Country Blue Ribbon Quilt Shop Please thank these shops when you visit them! Attending this evening’s meeting were 115 members and 3 guests. Meeting adjourned at 9 pm. Mary Jane Burton, Guild Secretary
