• Students who want to serve our country after high school have two options:

• Enlist directly after high school and receive training/college credit as a part-time student over the course of your service

• Obtain a degree from a 4-year or 2-year college as a full-time student, then join—possibly as an officer.

U.S. Armed Forces

• Offer 2-year Associate’s Degrees and Certificate programs

• A 2-year school is often the best fit for a student with • Below average SAT/ACT scores; a GPA of 2.9 or below

• The inability to be a full-time student

• Do not require SAT or ACT scores

• Some have transfer agreements with 4-year schools who want to get their core curriculum (or “basics”) done at a 2-year school

Two-Year Community Colleges

Page 6: th Grade Rider Parent- - WFISD · Redesigned SAT (to launch March 2016) •SAT/ACT Practice Study Guides •Method Test Prep Online Resource ... build resume, fill out online applications

• These schools offer 4-year bachelor degree programs• The most selective of these will want above a 4.0 GPA

• The majority of these will want students with a 3.0+ GPA

(approximately the top 60% at Rider)

• Admission requires that students take an SAT or ACT test• Schools don’t usually prefer one over the other but always research the

school to ensure that there is no preference

• A composite score of 1550 on the SAT should place

the student in a college-ready category

• For the ACT, students are deemed “college-ready” when they

score at or above the following benchmarks for each section

of the ACT: English, 18; Reading, 22; Math, 22; Science, 23

• SAT Subject tests are required from a few competitive out of state schools and programs

Four-Year Colleges and Universities

• Students in the Top 10% shall be admitted to a general academic teaching institution if the student meets the following conditions:• Recommended or Distinguished Program

• Submit transcript(s)

• Submit the application on time

• Keep in mind that just because a student may have automatic admission to the school itself, it does not mean that they have automatic admission to their program of choice at the college

• UT-Austin is the only exception in which the above applies but only to the top 8% of the graduating class.

Notes on Automatic Admission

• When a college says that they review your student’s application holistically, they will also consider the following:

• Community Service and Volunteering

• Leadership Roles

• Work Experience

• Distinguishing Characteristics

How to choose the best-fit school

Page 24: th Grade Rider Parent- - WFISD · Redesigned SAT (to launch March 2016) •SAT/ACT Practice Study Guides •Method Test Prep Online Resource ... build resume, fill out online applications

• When thinking about a particular school, students should ask themselves…

• Does this school offer the program I want to study?

• Can I see myself at this school for the next 4 years? Or for the next several semesters?

• Will this school allow me to grow as a professional and as a person?

• Considering our circumstances, are we paying the least possible amount of money to attend?

• AVOID superficial reasons for choosing a school such as “it’s a pretty campus” or “My friends are going here”.
