Th e Peace You are invited to greet those around you in the name of Christ.

Presider Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infi nite in mercy; welcoming sinners and inviting us to this table. Let us confess our sins, confi dent in God’s forgiveness.

Silence is keptPresider Most merciful God,All We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Presider Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confi rm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

Apostles CreedPresider Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say, All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suff ered under Pontius Pilate, was crucifi ed, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Presider Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, who in the fullness of time came among us in our fl esh, and opened to us the way of salvation.

Now we watch for the day when he will come again in power and great triumph to judge this world, that we, without shame or fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing. Th erefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sanctus (Missa Advenio) R.G. Lang

Presider We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made fl esh, Jesus your Son.

For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

10 Th e Th ird Sunday of Advent | December 11, 2016

On the night he was handed over to suff ering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Th erefore, Father, according to his command,

All we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

Presider and we off er our sacrifi ce of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifi ce, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctifi ed by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the fi rstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. All Amen.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the BreadPresider God of promise, you prepare a banquet for us in your kingdom. All Happy are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

Presider Th e gifts of God for the people of God.All Th anks be to God.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have participated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If you desire to know the love of God that overcomes indiff erence and despair, if you desire the recon-

ciliation that overcomes estrangement and alienation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. Th e bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the common cup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grape juice are served, grape juice is administered from the copper chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request in the East alcove.

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in a prayer

of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread and wine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your fi rst name and in a low voice briefl y state your prayer need. Th e prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a time for quiet prayer and meditation.

During Communion Advent Calendar Words: Rowan Williams Music: Philip Ledger in memoriam George Guest

He will come like the leaf ’s fall. He will come. One night when the November wind has fl ayed the trees to bone, and earth waves choking on the mould, the soft shroud’s folding. He will come like the frost. He will come. One morning when the shrinking earth opens on mist, to fi nd itself arrested in the net of alien, sword-set beauty. He will come like dark. He will come. One evening when the bursting red December sun draws up the sheet and penny-masks its eye to yield the star-snowed fi elds of sky. He will come like crying in the night, like blood, like breaking as the earth writhes to toss him free. He will come like child. He will come.

Sending Out of the DisciplesPrayer after CommunionPresider Merciful God,All may this eucharist free us from our sins, fi ll us with unending joy, and prepare us for the birthday of our Saviour. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, who is Lord now and for ever. Amen.

Children’s ChurchFor those families new to the Cathedral, we would like to let you know that we off er a Christian education program for children ages 5 and up based on Godly Play. Th is week we will tell the story for Advent 3 & 4.

Sunday Mornings. Children and youth are wel-come to join us in the nursery between 9:30am and 10:15am, or in the chancel after 10:15am, on Sunday mornings. Participants will be accompanied down to the Park Room and will be brought back upstairs to rejoin their families for the Eucharist.

A change: In the past, many children have stayed in the Chancel for the Eucharist, but we are strongly en-couraging children to return to their families as a time to worship together. As always, those who are unable to rejoin their families are welcome to stay with us in the chancel until the service is over.

Notes from Andrew Stephens-Renniepunk rawk magnificat - december , 2016

For reasons diffi cult to explain, in recent days I’ve found it easier to imagine Mary in a faded Ramones t-shirt and scuff ed Chuck Taylors rather than the clothing typifi ed in the church’s serene iconography.

Is it scandalous to imagine Th eotokos, the mother of our Lord, in ripped jeans, proudly bearing a sacred heart tat-too, always pointing us back to the anti-establishment cry of the prophets? Perhaps.

And yet in this year of coming to know the Maundy Café, its dedicated volunteers, and incredible guests, I’ve come to believe this image off ers us something valuable. To re-situate Mary into our time and space honours her, and helps me to see her as she might have been on the margins of her own society.

Can you imagine Mary huddled for warmth in the Ca-thedral’s back alley on a sub-zero night? Can you picture her lining up for lunch in the parish hall? Th ere she is, bundled up, hands frost-bitten, having just come in from sleeping in the cold. She looks a bit frazzled, headphones pulled on to keep ears warm and spirits high. Th e volume is cranked, and she’s singing along.

As she pours real cream into her strong black coff ee, her song of liberation crosses the barrier between guest and volunteer. In this moment, there is no longer server nor served. We are all one, drawn into her passionate per-formance. Mary embodies a hope and a reconciliation I can barely grasp. And yet, it is a hope that resonates to my core.

"My soul magnifi es the Lord,” Mary sings, “and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.”

Th ere she is at the table, close to the exit, ready to go on a moment’s notice. She’s surrounded by the others we have come to serve. Powerless amongst the powerful. Th ere are those of us who choose to be in that room on Wednesdays and Th ursdays. Th ere are others like Mary whose reason for being there is survival. And this day, she is alone. One of few women in a room full of men.

Every day she comes face to face with the imbalances at

play in our world – imbalances of power, dignity, and freedom. Where most days I get to choose what I eat for lunch, she has far less choice.

A sandwich, some soup, a cookie. Each of these dishes is prepared by volunteers with great love. I know it. I’ve seen it. I’m grateful for the heart put into serving our city’s most vulnerable. And yet, I’m left to wonder how her life might be diff erent if she, and so many others, were given a greater ability to choose. So much dignity is found in the simple act of choice.

What if she were off ered the choice not only of what to eat, but also how to serve. How would that change her? How would it change us?

Returning to Mary’s song, I’m left to wonder what it is in God’s promise that convinces her that “surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed.”

From her marginal position, she sees a light burning in the darkness. She sings hope for a new world and a new way of relating that she hasn’t yet experienced. Mary’s song is God’s song. A prophetic call for a future of peace across the boundaries we’ve erected to keep ourselves apart.

Th is is a future in which Lion and Lamb peacefully coex-ist. A future in which there is no longer server nor served. A future in which all are gathered around one table to eat of God’s bounty.

Mary defi antly proclaims that God has lifted up the low-ly, and fi lled the hungry with good things. She dares to dream God’s dream for reconciliation and right relation-ship. When the song is over, when the soup, sandwich and cookie are fi nished, I imagine her clearing her plate. I imagine standing spellbound as she asks the group of us clustered around the edge, “how can I serve?”

Th at’s the question I’m left with. And I think it’s a good one in this season. How is it that we can join God, like Mary, in creating a world of justice and joy?

I think it starts at the table, is inspired by Mary’s song, and grows in table fellowship together, as each of us serves side by side.
