FOREWORD This test report details a fire resistance test conducted on a full scale suspended ceiling with Libra Systems Rigidlock metal framework clad with AMF Thermatex FeinStratos tiles and Armstrong Dune eVo Board tiles. The test sponsor was Libra Systems Ltd. The test specimen was installed by Alltone Ltd. The construction of the specimen took place on the 14th August 2017. The Building Test Centre played no role in the design or selection of materials comprising the test specimen. The test was witnessed by Mr Peter Allen of Libra Systems Ltd and Mr Chris Hobbs of CMH Design & Consultancy Ltd and was conducted on the 17th August 2017. “Because of the nature of fire resistance testing and the consequent difficulty in quantifying the uncertainty of measurement of fire resistance, it is not possible to provide a stated degree of accuracy of the result.” (BS EN 1363-1: 2012, section 12.1)

TEST CONSTRUCTION

Description of Construction The specimen was constructed in a refractory concrete lined steel restraint test frame with an opening of 4000mm (long) x 3000mm (wide). Libra angle trim was fixed at nominally 300mm centres, with 35mm Hilti HUS fire resistant fixings, to the perimeter of the test frame. Main runners, (Libra Rigidlock 24) were positioned at 1200mm centres, starting from the centre of the test frame spanning 4000mm. The central main runner having an expansion joint at mid-span and the two outer main runners had an expansion joint approximately 1200mm away from the viewing platform end of the specimen. These Main Runners were suspended using 2mm ceiling suspension wire through angle brackets secured to the joists. Cross Tee sections, (Libra Rigidlock 24) 1200mm long, were fitted at 600mm centres perpendicular to the three main runners at 600mm centres. Cross Tee sections, (Libra Rigidlock 24) 600mm long, were fitted at 600mm centres parallel to the 4000mm length of the test frame, between the 1200mm cross tees and the angle trim to form 600mm x 600mm modules. A mixture of AMF Thermatex FeinStratos Mineral Ceiling Tiles and Armstrong Dune eVo Mineral Ceiling Tiles, 600mm x 600mm x 15mm thick, were laid within the grid, as shown in Figure 1 . The edge channel was sealed on the underside using intumescent mastic.

i) Nominally, 600mm (long) x 600mm (wide) x 15mm (thick), manufactured by Armstrong World Industries Limited and supplied by Libra Systems Limited.

Measured mass per tile: 1.36kg Measured thickness: 15.0mm Measured moisture content: 0.91%

AMF Thermatex FeinStratos

ii) Nominally, 600mm (long) x 600mm (wide) x 15mm (thick), manufactured by Knauf AMF GmbH & Co and supplied by Libra Systems Limited.

Measured mass per tile: 1.41kg Measured thickness: 15.0mm Measured moisture content: 1.12%

The surface densities and board thicknesses were calculated using the actual weight and size of a selection of tiles used in the test specimen. The moisture content was determined using samples dried to constant weight in an oven at 50°C.

TEST PROCEDURE The test was conducted fully in accordance with BS 476: Part 22: 1987: Clause 9.

The asymmetrical specimen was subjected to fire from the underside this being the required direction of fire resistance as specified in BS 476: Part 22: 1987: Clause 9.

Where areas of the test specification are ambiguous, or open to interpretation, the Fire Test Study Group Resolutions 43, 50, 53, 70, 71, 72, 77, 79, 83 have been followed (where appropriate). These Resolutions provide the basis of common agreements between the fire test laboratories, which are members of this group.

The test procedure used was 476/22/9, issue 2.

The ambient temperature at the commencement of the test was 22°C.

The furnace pressure was set to control at 16.7 ±2 Pa positive with respect to atmosphere, 150mm below the specimen, except during the first 5 minutes of the test. Furnace pressure data is shown in Figure 3 .

TEST RESULTS The requirement of the standard was satisfied for the following periods:

Integrity

Sustained Flaming 70 minutes, no failure.

6mm Gap Gauge 70 minutes, no failure.

25mm Gap Gauge 70 minutes, no failure.

Cotton Pad 70 minutes, no failure.

Insulation 8 minutes.

Test Terminated 70 minutes, at the request of the sponsor.

LIMITATIONS The results only relate to the behaviour of the specimen of the element of construction under the particular conditions of test; they are not intended to be the sole criteria for assessing the potential fire performance of the element in use nor do they reflect the actual behaviour in fires.

The specification and interpretation of fire test methods are the subject of ongoing development and refinement. Changes in associated legislation may also occur. For these reasons it is recommended that the relevance of test reports over 5 years old should be considered by the user. The laboratory that issued the report will be able to offer, on behalf of the legal owner, a review of the procedures adopted for a particular test to ensure that they are consistent with current practices, and if required may endorse the test report.

0 04 Unexposed Face Expansion joints had begun activating. Centre track had pushed up and out of the angle at the end.

0 05 Unexposed Face Splice area of grid pushed upwards between rows A+B on the far left-hand side of the specimen when viewed from viewing platform.

0 08 INSULATION FAILURE. The mean temperature rise of the standard five thermocouples exceeded 140°C.

0 09 Unexposed Face The temperature rise of thermocouples 22 & 24, positioned at the centre of the specimen and the top left hand corner when viewed from the viewing platform, had exceeded 180°C. Tiles popped up either side of the expansion joint.

0 10 Metal ‘T’ sections had buckled slightly and had begun to discolour. Unexposed Face Tiles had begun to crack on the first row of AMF boards.

0 15 Unexposed Face All tiles were discoloured.

0 20 No visible change.
