A Better World (Tax ID #56-2238007) is pleased to announce that our 17th Annual Charity Golf Tournament will be held at the exclusive Cedarwood Country Club on April 23, 2018 (rain date April 30th) to benefit the children in our After School Program. Please join us as we celebrate 16 years of service in the Ashley Park and surrounding areas by helping us raise $35,000 for A Better World’s After School Program.

WHO WE ARE MISSION: The mission of ABW is to transform the community (Ashley Park and the surrounding areas) and its families through its youth (K-12); by holistically developing children who are able to achieve their personal best academically, so they may become productive citizens who give back to their community through the use of their skills and talents.
HISTORY: A Better World (ABW) was born out of a heart that is burdened to help the under resourced. In January 2001, we started an After-School program to improve the lives of the downtrodden, and give a sense of community to our neighbors. As is often the case with children who come from broken homes, affected by single-parent rearing and impoverished conditions, children lack a strong identity with role models. The program started operating two days a week with only eight kids enrolled, providing just juice, snacks (crackers, chips, etc.) and the opportunity to go to Disney World. Those eight students did go to Disney World, and they all graduated high school. They are all hard-working productive citizens.
STATISTICS OF THE PROGRAM: (50 STUDENTS ENROLLED) • 65% African-American, 30% Hispanic, and 5% Bi-Racial. • 93% OF THE STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM RECEIVE FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH • 90% OF THE STUDENTS ARE RAISED BY A SINGLE PARENT
ABW’S PROGRAM: (M-F/3:00PM-6:30PM) • Homework Assistance & Tutoring: Students get help with their homework from afterschool
teachers and volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring. • Kid’s Cafe: A feeding program through Second Harvest Food Bank; allows us to feed students
a snack and dinner. We also give each family a bag of can-goods each Friday. • Family Support: We have the “Good Scents Store” which stores toiletries, basic hygiene items
such as: toothpaste, soap, and deodorant, and home-good items. Parents have access to these items if they need them.
• Computer Lab: Students are able to use web-based learning tools and complete homework assignments using the computers.
• Mini Bus: ABW has a 13 passenger mini bus for the students whose bus does not drop off at ABW and students that do not have a ride home. Our bus driver has a route which is followed five days a week.
• ABW Summer Camp: During the summer months when school is out ABW operates a summer camp that provides academic enrichment and extracurricular activities. Providing these services during the summer months keeps at-risk children out of trouble.
• ABW Summer Trip: During the summer 30 children, many who have never left North Carolina, are taken on a trip to another state and get taken on a tour of that state’s most popular attractions.
