“ARCHITECTURAL GLASS ART”Where have we come from?
Where are we going?
Why are we here?
The answers to all these minor questions will be revealed - in full!
Andrew Moor has been a central figure in the Architectural Glass world for nearly thirty years and has worked with well known artists and architects on projects at an international level using a variety of techniques.
Andrew Moor Associates was founded in 1984 to assist architects in managing glass art projects. In only one year, his practise became the international agent for Derix Glass Studios, project managing artworks across the UK up to 1,000sqm. Andrew Moor Associates swiftly developed into an international company, creating autonomous and architectural artworks in locations across Europe, as well as in Asia and the US. Andrew Moor is known throughout the glass art world as an authority on what can be achieved in glass, managing Patrick Herron’s glass art project in the Tate Gallery as well as artworks by Christopher Le Brun and Henry Moore.

“Stained Glass and Beyond”with Gordon Huether
Public Artist Gordon Huether will discuss the evolution of art glass through the lens of his 30-year career. Through case studies, discussion of glass techniques and applications,
as well as other materials the artist now works with, Huether will provide a thorough overview of what it means to be an artist working in the public arena. Huether will also draw upon a career of experiences and insights, as well as personal anecdotes in his lively and wide ranging talk.
Gordon Huether has created public art installations for universities, hospitals, recreation centers, civic buildings, libraries, museums, airports, transportation centers, parking garages, and private corporations throughout the world. He has completed more than 250 art commissions over the course of his 30-year career. In addition, his fine artwork has been exhibited at museums and galleries, and is represented in private collections throughout the United States and Europe. Inspired by his father, Huether made his first stained glass piece at the family’s kitchen table and as his career progressed, he began working with a wide variety of glass applications, and other materials, including steel, aluminum, fabric and composite materials.

“From “New Glass” to Now - a 50 year Journey in Glass”
with Elizabeth Devereaux sponsored by Verrerie de Saint-Just
Times have significantly changed for the art glass world in the last 50 years. Influenced by the German and other European masters, many took different roads. My journey took the road of contemporary liturgical glass and public art. Always site-specific, and
intentionally collaborative, nature is my symbolic language as I explore both the lushness of watercolor and the intriguing optical qualities of reflection, and light projection within architectural space.
“The power of imagination and art is at the level of soul, where we do not consciously know what is happening. Therefore, we cannot engineer it, do not need to understand it, nor can we fully stop its effects! “(Richard Rohr)
“The imagination works through suggestion, not description. Description is always direct and frequently closes off what it names. Suggestion respects the mystery and richness of a thing. All it offers are clues to its nature.” (John O Donahue)

“Taking the Lead in Lead Exposure”with Ariana Makau sponsored by DHD Metals
Learning to navigate the realities of day-to-day stained-glass treatment with regulatory expectations is an ongoing process. Ariana Makau will give an overview of select examples of Health & Safety improvements as utilized at Nzilani Glass Conservation, to be implemented in your own studio. When we are safe, we are freer to enjoy what we do, and the quality of our work improves. All stained
glass workers should adhere to OSHA as well as Federal and local construction regulations. While these may seem overwhelming at first, Ariana will breakdown best practices resulting in a safer environment for everyone.
Ariana Makau has been involved in the field of conservation for over 20 years, having worked at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), a member of the Women Presidents Organization (WPO) and acts as an Independent Stained Glass Conservator/Consultant with various art institutions that do not have stained glass conservators on staff.

“At and Through: Considering Transparency and Reflection”
with Matthew Day Perez sponsored by Angel Gilding
Glass is a ubiquitous and often over looked material. We clad buildings with it, adorn interiors, look through it, and engage with it even in our mobile devices. This talk will be a short survey of glass and mirror production as it relates to my personal rapport with the material and how I exploit its many properties in my studio practice.
Day-Perez has received many awards including the Fulbright, the John Rena National Endowments for the Arts Scholarship, a U.S. State Department Grant for new works, a Lois Roth Grant as well as residencies at The Corning Museum of Glass, The Creative Glass Center of America, and Pilchuck glass School. He has lectured at several academic/creative institutions both domestically and abroad in addition to numerous exhibitions in the United States, Australia, Asia, and New Zealand.

“Internal Light, melting glass as a tool of artistic expression”
with David RuthDavid Ruth will review his journey from
casting glass in Los Angeles in the 70’s through his current architectural project of cast glass geology. He has been a pioneer in making arhitectural cast and fused glass panels using kilns and furnaces to find ways of extending the language of glass into sculpture and architecture.
David Ruth is an independent artist in Oakland casting glass sculpture and architectural panels. Searching historical techniques for lost opportunities and ways of thinking that were left behind he looks for early processes made obsolete by industry. Originally learning to melt glass from Los Angeles artist, Roger Darricarrere, David has perfected architectural scale fused and polished panels and mold cast sculpture. His work can bee seen in public and private commissions and museums around the world.

painting with indre mccraw | JudSon StudioS 143Indre McCraw shares her process and tooling in this take on the traditional glass painting class. The class will focus on making “creature pieces”, creating playful and confident pieces using different glass painting techniques and tricks with the goal of taking away 2 to 3 fired samples. Indre has been a glass painter and designer for over twenty years; she graduated with a BFA in Illustration and Art Education in 1994 from Parsons School of Design. In 1996, after working as a textile designer in NYC’s fashion district, she became the third apprentice and Kress Foundation fellow of the St Ann’s stained glass conservation program where she had first been introduced to the field as an intern in 1993. While training in conservation techniques, it became clear that her interest and aptitude were specifically geared towards stained glass replication painting. Indre has replicated work for the Stanford White Cottage in Montauk; The Thomas Edison House in New Jersey; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, most notably for the Langon Chapel at the Cloisters. She took on a painter position at Judson Studios in 2016.Her original painting and design work can be seen at Princeton University’s Ivy Club, Yale University, and at Temple Beth Or in Maple Glen, PA. angeL giLding & mirroring demonStrationMirroring, in particular Angel Gilding, has long been part of the techniques employed by stained glass artists. Attend this session where we will discuss the history of the craft and demonstrate a variety of mirroring techniques. We will silver sheet glass, gild a globe and demonstrate antiquing techniques that are in growing demand in the glass art world. Many stained glass artists are finding that mirroring is a great way to expand out the options they can offer their customers and carry on a time honored craft.Sarah King was a stained glass artist in Chicago searching for a way to replicate the gold mirror in historic bungalow windows in the area. She connected with Rick Glawson, who had become skilled at angel gilding-the 19th century technique for chemical deposition of gold onto glass. After Rick’s sudden passing, Sarah founded the company Angel Gilding with her chemist husband Mike in 2003. Their daughter, Alix joined the team in 2015. Angel Gilding now provides mirroring supplies and techniques around the world.

Lamination with rich Lamothe | weStin Long BeachThis introductory workshop presents a new method of combining the functionality of modern architectural glazing substrates, such as insulated glass and safety glass, with the tradition of stained glass artistry. Lamination techniques offer a practical solution for stained glass designs that can be efficiently combined with acid etching, painting, and abrasive etching processes to provide an economical architectural-design solution.
Rich Lamothe established Glass Strategies in 2004 (glassstrategies.com). They quickly surged to the top of their industry thanks to their experienced team and cutting edge facilities. They serve a remarkable list of clients both national and international. “From the miniature to the monumental, we bond art and science as deftly and creatively as we bond glass. Now, there’s nothing glass can’t do.” Rich currently also works for Bohle America as technical support for UV Bonding and 2K Silicone.

reStoration with raLph miLLS | weStin Long BeachSo, you’ve been doing this thing called stained glass for some time now and you’re pretty darn good at it. Then along comes “So-in-so” and asks you to re-lead their 100-year-old window. “Ahhhhhhhhh…… sure I can do it” you say. After all, how hard can it be? Truth be told, it’s not that hard if you know how to do it. It is however, a whole different animal compared to new work. No doubt about it, restoration work is more involved and more complicated. Not to worry. Join stained glass veteran Ralph Mills and learn the ABC’s of restoration. Topics include documentation, rubbings, disassembly, cleaning, glass conservation, glazing, cementing, finishing and many more “secrets” of restoration. No need to shy away from those lucrative restoration projects any longer!
