    1 June 2011 Dear Member, On behalf of President Daniel Burt and the Committee, it is my great pleasure to table the 2011/12 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club Annual Report. This report is the 45

    th to be presented to our members and includes reports from our five senior teams, the highly

    successful junior program and extensive player statistics. Special thanks must go to everybody that made a contribution to the preparation of this report, in particular John Krohn for his assistance with statistical and historical information. As this will be my last Annual Report for STC, I take this opportunity to thank the four Presidents I have had the absolute pleasure of working under over my seven years as Secretary of this great club. The ultimate honor was bestowed upon me at Presentation Night this year, where I was granted life membership of STC. As the first female, non-playing recipient, the significance of this recognition is even more apparent in my case, having never donned the whites (although having been asked on more than one occasion to fill in by the selectors and a number of captains over the years!!). Thank you to all members for their support and encouragement throughout my tenure, and best wishes to the incoming committee, especially the new Secretary – good luck boys!! Sincerely,

    KYLIE ZENNARO

    PRESIDENTS REPORT The 45

    th season of the STC South Camberwell Cricket Club was a very rewarding season, however it certainly had

    its challenges. As a first-year President, with a new look committee, there was a lot of enthusiasm in the pre-season. Although our training numbers were down from previous seasons, it did justify our decision to reduce our senior teams from six to five. The season will be remembered for one of the great grand final victories, with the 1

    st XI winning their 4

    th flag in 10

    seasons, a period of unprecedented success for the club. A big congratulations to our first year captain, Luke D‟Astoli for his leadership throughout the year and for his incredible innings in the grand final which won him the ECA Medal for best on ground in the grand final. Congratulations also to Rohan Worthy who won the Kevin Burt Medal for his performance in a winning grand final side. The result aside, one of the most pleasing things about the grand final victory was the sheer number of STC supporters at Ferndale Park to cheer on the boys. We certainly have a strong supporter base at STC. The 4

    th XI, led by Peter Lynch also made the finals, narrowly losing in the semi-final, whilst our other sides were

    unable to make the finals. Our junior program had a very successful season too, with both Under 14 sides making the finals, with Peter McDonald‟s team demolishing the opposition in both the semi and grand finals to win the title in convincing style. Well done boys. Tim Bach again took on the role of our Milo junior cricket co-ordinator, and was awarded the Best Clubman award at presentation night We continued our relationship with club coach, Steve Maddocks, who was able to give us the benefit of his years of experience, with the numbers at training and the level of intensity increasing as a result. Steve has also been great in developing some of the former juniors this season, with many having breakout seasons for the club. However we did have some very poor turnouts at training during the year when Steve wasn‟t there, which is something that we hope to rectify next season. The club also donated old cricket equipment to Cricket 4 Kids, a non-profit organisation which delivers cricket equipment to under privileged kids in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. One wonders whether the next Murali or Sangakarra is using a bat with „STC 4

    th XI‟ written on the back of it!

    Off-field, the club had a great social calendar which culminated in the 45

    th Anniversary Gala held at Kooyong

    Tennis Club. The club announced its Teams of the Decade – congratulations to all the current and former players who made the respective sides. The other highlight was the inducting of the clubs 23

    rd Life Member, and our first

    female, Kylie Zennaro. Kylie has put in a tonne of work over the last decade, and her 7 year stint as Secretary is the equal longest consecutive period of service. Without her contributions, the club will not be in the strong position that it is today. She will be sorely missed on committee next season, as she takes a well deserved break. And whilst the club had many great moments in season 2011/12, there were also some low points to the season. The senior turnout to the Christmas Party was its lowest for many years, and as a result, what is usually the clubs biggest fundraiser for the year barely broke even. The financial performance of the club as a result was poor, making quite a sizeable loss for the season. We face even higher costs next year, and one of my main tasks will be to try to turn this around next season, looking at increasing our revenues and containing costs where possible. The lowest point in the season was just after Christmas when the Executive had to stand down one of our captains from his position, after he deliberately ignored the directives of the committee and selectors. Although not all people will agree with our decision, the Executive unanimously felt that his position as captain was untenable once he had gone against the rules and regulations that all club office bearers and leaders are expected to adhere to. I would like to thank the Executive Committee and the Committee as a whole. We had a lot of new faces, especially in Executive roles, and everyone did a stellar job. A special thanks again to Kylie Zennaro for her tireless amount of work she has done as Secretary. I would also like to thank all of the captains for their on-field leadership this season, and our selectors who did a difficult job, especially late in the season when we were struggling for numbers. Whilst we did struggle to field 5 sides at certain times, we will be embarking on a large recruitment drive in the pre-season, as well as a targeted re-recruiting of former junior players who we haven‟t seen in a couple of years. With this, we hope to maintain our 5 senior sides and continue to be one of the strongest synthetic clubs in the ECA.

    FIRST XI REPORT After an amazing performance in the finals series, the Saints are once again the premier club in the MacGibbon Shield! Our success in 2011/12 can be attributed to 3 major things:

    A desire to improve and willingness to work from all players

    An ability to learn from mistakes and losses and not simply lose confidence from them

    A love for the contest and ability to perform at our best under pressure Congratulations to all players for demonstrating these characteristics, which I think, is made possible by the genuine camaraderie of the side. The spirit with which we play the game makes the effort to play and train seem a lot less like hard work and a lot more like fun. The big improvers Andrew Krohn, Dan Sharpe and Tom Casha in particular took massive steps up in their contributions to the side. Andrew won the Most Improved award and took out the bowling average in his first season in the 1s including 3/24 in the grand final, while Sharpey opened the batting and Tom was our primary spinner throughout the season. All had a massive impact on our success. We also welcomed Alex Brebner-Griffin who made his debut in the First XI in round 10 and showed great signs opening the batting. Learning from mistakes During the season we suffered agonizing losses to Trinity by 3 runs and to Deepdene by 2 runs. We were also humiliated against Boroondara and chased leather against Trinity conceding over 300 for the first time in years. The lessons we learned from these mistakes were pivotal in our finals success. Performing under pressure

    Round 1 of the year sets up momentum for the season ahead and Steve (149 not out), Sharpey (74) and Fairy (45 and 3/21) ensured we got off to the right start with a 162 run win.

    After slumping to 6/32 in reply to Clifton Hill‟s total of 102 in round 6, Dan O‟Connell top scored with 42 and Lawrence Colman hit the winning runs as we won by one wicket in a thriller.

    Playing against Boroondara in round 8 we retaliated to our previous humiliation with an amazing assault and bowled them out for 65. BBS made 51 in reply and we fell 8 runs short of outright victory to score a massive mental edge ahead of our grand final.

    Dan O‟Connell again turned it on with 133 when the team needed it most leading us from 5/82 to 292 against BUC in round 12. A vital win that secured our finals berth.

    Semi finals are hard to win and Luke‟s 5 wicket haul set up the match and was followed up with determined top order batting to secure a 5 wicket victory.

    The bowling in the grand final was sensational to bowl Boroondara out for 99. Our chase would not be so easy, coming back from 5/32 and 8/74 to win the game by two wickets, taking 65 overs to score the required 100. Dan O‟Connell top scored with 28 while Luke (25 not out) and Ro (7 not out) bravely knocked off the final 26 runs in front of a big STC crowd. Doubtlessly one of the greatest performances in the club‟s 45 year history.

    T20 Campaigns In the Primary Edge Cup we were unusually drawn to play against district side Camberwell Magpies first up at home. We batted very well first up putting on over 140 on a slow outfield but our bowling was not up to its usual high standards and we lost the game. Having lost a match we were unable to progress to the next round and chose to play several young players in our next game against Wyclif. Matt Thomas, Alex Brebner-Griffin and Jordan Anthony all performed well and we won the game in a canter, which was a very pleasing result. Having won the Primary Edge Cup last season we represented the ECA in the Statewide competition and were drawn to play Heatherdale out at their ground. We witnessed one of the biggest hitting displays of all time as their opener made 100 in no time. Despite our best efforts, 180+ was always out of our reach and our statewide campaign came to a premature conclusion. With only 3 matches played, the T20 player of the year award was not activated. Congratulations go to Steve O‟Connell for becoming a father, winning the Club Champion, the Basil Finnigan Medal and the club and ECA batting averages. He was also named in the ECA team of the year along with Adam D‟Addazio and Luke D‟Astoli who was named captain of the team. Congratulations to Rohan Worthy for winning the Kevin Burt medal for his grand final heroics, while Luke also won the Tulloch medal, awarded by the umpires for the best player in the GF.

    Thanks go to my vice captain Sam Fairbrother for all of his support throughout the year. To the selectors and the committee for their generous time and effort, to Jack for his scoring efforts in the finals and Steve Maddocks for his coaching throughout the season. Also big thanks to the whole club who supported us so wholeheartedly in the finals. We were proud to represent you. Our aim next year is for the First XI to go back to back for the first time in the history of the club. Bring it on!

    SECOND XI REPORT It was an up and down season in the two‟s this year, our first game we took to the field with 6 blokes under the age of 17. If someone told me at the start of the season that the best players in the 2‟s were going to be kids that were 15 and 16 years of age I wouldn‟t have believed them. That‟s exactly how it turned out though. We had Alex (two dads) Brebner Griffin proving to be a handy spinner and a quality batsmen, this was reiterated with a call up to the 1‟s for a couple of games. Matty Thomas came through the ranks a little later in the season and proved to all of us that he isn‟t just a bowler but a pretty awesome little batsmen as well, the highlight of that was a spectacular 150 runs in the third last game of the season. Matt Doran took everyone by surprise when he bowled up a storm for the season, he was one of the most consistent players throughout the whole season. Richy Mcdonald performed week in week out and didn‟t really have a bad game for the season. After a pretty scratchy start to the season we managed to earn a bit respect and claw our way back into finals contention with one game left for the year. There was a glimmer of hope with jack crunching the numbers and working out that an outright win in the last game would surely see us playing finals cricket. Unfortunately it wasn‟t meant to be, the boys gave it there all in the first week and really looked a chance of coming away with the outright win we so desperately needed. The rain set in on the second week of play crushing our chance of a finals birth. I‟ll give special mention to Beau Coyle for a well made 95 down at Warner in the third last game, and Matty Williams for an exceptional 96 in the same game. I‟d like to thank Brad Craine for standing in as captain while I was on my unexpected business trip. And also the selectors for the outstanding job they all did this season. And everyone who made season 2011/2012 so enjoyable.

    THIRD XI REPORT At season‟s end the Thirds were propping up the B Grade ladder with three wins, a tie and a washout from 13 matches. While in many respects the outcome of the season was disappointing, there were plenty of positives to take forward. Of the 44 players who represented the Third XI during the season,

    12 played their first senior game for the club in 2011/12;

    17 were former STC junior cricketers;

    3 were current STC junior cricketers;

    19 played only one match in the Thirds;

    9 played in at least one of the final two rounds in the Seconds, when the Second XI came from bottom place to within a fine afternoon of pinching a semi-final berth;

    Only six players achieved a half-century, and of those six only two did it twice, with one, Matt Williams, going on to score the team‟s only hundred (127 vs eventual premiers Burwood Uniting Canterbury);

    Only two players scored more than 170 runs for the season;

    Only two players took double-figure wicket tallies (Fabian D‟Addazio with 11 and Matt Francis with 10), and no-one took more than three wickets in an innings;

    The bowlers took only 78 wickets between them, including 17 in one game against Clifton Hill (although the figures are distorted by Trinity Willison‟s innings being almost entirely washed out in Round 13)

    The fielders managed nine run-outs, six engineered by Arjun Dhandapani

    We bowled opposition teams out only three times. One of our three wins was against Boroondara when they topped the ladder (first game after Christmas) and was achieved with only ten players. Our tie was against the eventual runners-up, and featured 63* from first-year U16 Harrison Lagastes. The main messages from the season for me are about potential, promise, consistency, effort, concentration and enjoyment. There is enormous potential in the group of players who came through the Thirds this year. Talent, as such, is not an issue. Promise is the illusion that potential by itself will deliver results. Consistency is about backing up one improved performance with another. Many of us had one good game, or perhaps a couple, with some forgettable results in between. It may be galling, but it is true that hard work, especially at training, will yield rewards over time. Without focus, that critical catch will go down, or a loose shot will waste the foundation of a big innings, or a bad ball will relieve pressure built up over several tight overs. We need to reinforce every ball of good work with comparably good work next ball. So many games come down to a pivotal moment, when one team made a mistake on which the other capitalised. We are amateur park cricketers, playing for fun. Training nights should be fun, and a weekly Saturday afternoon is a lot to give up for half a year to a discretionary activity you are not enjoying. The game is to be enjoyed. But it will be enjoyed more if (irrespective of actual results) we know we have brought our best efforts to the crease, we have supported our team-mates to the best of our ability, and we have done justice to ourselves and our club in the contest. With commitment, goals, teamwork and some good laughs, the STC Third XI can go far in 2012/13 to compete and become a force in the competition, as well as support the efforts of the Second and First XIs Thanks to the Committee, Brad Craine and his selection committee, Steve Maddocks who coached for everyone, Shwatta and Stirlo who captained the side in the final matches, all those who answered calls on Friday nights or Saturday mornings to ensure we put a team in the field (the extended Francis family in particular) and Lynchy and the Fours for making the finals and probably keeping the Threes in B Grade for next season. And special thanks to Cathy for supporting me in jumping from selection duties to captaincy.

    FOURTH XI REPORT 2011/12 was another eventful season for the 4

    th XI. From a results point of view, we started with two big wins,

    followed by three heavy defeats. A washout & two more wins had us in fourth place over the Xmas break. Two disappointing losses in the New Year put us on the back foot, but then things began to click. We finished the home & away season with two more solid wins (including defending 168 at Nettleton v 3

    rd placed Deepdene), with a final

    round washout giving us a semi-final berth against the Burwood juggernaut. An excellent bowling & fielding effort in the semi-final saw us roll the minor premiers for 163, Marty & Moose leading the way with 5 & 3 wickets respectively. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of Morro, Dom & Shippa, we were unable to put together enough partnerships to trouble the opposition, falling 58 runs short. It was a difficult result to swallow at the time, but with hindsight we can now look back on the season with pride in what was achieved. Once again, the Fourth XI fulfilled its role of giving youngsters a chance to test themselves at senior level. We had two under 14s, Fred Oldfield and Tom Shatin, make their senior debuts together in round 5. Fred opened the bowling and Tom took the gloves, and both looked very impressive. In the same game, Pat Nunan made an unbeaten 38 and looked very comfortable. Harry Douglas played his first senior game in round 11 and showed great potential with the ball. There will be plenty more opportunities for these guys next season, along with any other junior players who would like to put their hand up for senior selection. The two mainstays from the junior ranks were Xavier Wigg & Dom Hando. Xavier put in some good efforts with bat & ball, but he really found his niche as wicket-keeper for the second half of the season. He did a great job behind the stumps, and also became one of the noisiest in the field by the end of the season. Dom continued to show that he is a very capable all-rounder, and as a fielder often produced the miraculous catch or run-out that his team needed. His batting performance in the semi-final showcased his ability to perform under pressure. Other highlights from the season included Morro‟s ton v AYC, Moose‟s 22 wickets in six games, a fine debut season from Damien Vardy, and continued improvement from James Terrill, Brendan David, and several others. Throughout the season, forty-three players took to the field for the 4

    th XI. Each player gave their all for the team, but

    the constant changes made consistency difficult to achieve. This was largely due to unavailabilities across all grades. There is no easy answer to this, because there is no doubt that the world is becoming busier and it can be difficult to commit to cricket every week. However, it is worth remembering that every time you are able to put cricket first it helps not only your team, but it strengthens the teams below & creates competition for spots in the teams above. A club is only as strong as the available playing list on any given week. To keep STC strong we need to put it first as often as we can. In the latter part of the season we were afforded some stability, and by March we had been able to build a well-balanced squad of fourteen players, made up of juniors, developers, and veterans (with some falling into more than one category). Ultimately, three were unlucky in missing out on a semi-final spot, but each showed great character in handling the disappointment, and continued to do whatever they could to support the team. My thanks go to all who played with the 4‟s this season. It was always an enjoyable group to be part of. In particular, thanks to Marty and Morro who shared the vice-captaincy duties at various time during the season, and to Shippa & Muzz for the experience they brought to the team. Thank-you also to the committee for all their hard work, and to the selectors who gave us every chance in another difficult season. Finally, congratulations to the 1

    st XI on their great season and well done on bringing the Macgibbon shield back to

    where it belongs.

    FIFTH XI REPORT Season 2011/12 was a very difficult season for the STC 5

    th XI. The side, having made the grand final the previous

    year in LOC3, were promoted to LOC2, which was the grade in which our previous 5th XI were playing. Eugene

    Fitzwilliam put his hand up to captain the side again, assisted by Justin Murray. Unfortunately, we lost some key players from the previous season, and the guys found the competition very difficult, with some heavy losses in the first few games. The LOC2 competition had an odd number of teams, meaning that we had 2 byes throughout the season. During a 9 week period prior to Christmas, the boys endured a frustrating time where we only played 2 weeks of cricket. Two byes, several washouts and rostered weeks off in the LOC competition meant that the side never got the chance to build any momentum. However the side did bring up its first win in the last game before Christmas. The first game back after Christmas, was one of the most amazing games I have ever played in. Chasing 191 against Abbortsford Anglers, we fell to 9/150 in the 35

    th over, still 40 runs adrift. However, what we then witnessed

    was nothing short of remarkable. Our number 10 and 11 batsmen, Sangkar Thiagarajan, and Kevin Bell, put on a 42 run 10

    th wicket partnership in 6 overs. This included a straight 6 from Kevin with 4 balls to go, to win the match

    in truly amazing scenes. Unfortunately, two weeks later we had to make the difficult decision to take the captaincy off Fitzy due to an incident that occurred in the lead up to a match. As a result of this decision, Fitzy then retired as a player of STC. Fitzy has been associated with the club for over 35 years, and was elevated to a Life Member back in 1984 due to his off-field contributions including stints in executive positions. We thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him well in his future endeavours. I would also like to thank Stirling Rowe who kindly stepped in to captain the side in the last few weeks. Unfortunately, we struggled to field a side over the last 4 weeks and the team struggled as a result. I would like to thank all of the past players, junior dads and others who filled in during the last 4 weeks of the season, which enabled the club to field 5 sides each week. The side ended up with 2 wins for the season and 10 losses, and disappointingly finished in last position. Congratulations must go to Justin Murray who won his first Basil Finnegan Medal. He had a great all round season which saw him take home the Team Champion and the Bowling average. Rick Zambelli had another fantastic season with the bat, taking out the Batting average for the 2

    nd year in a row.
