However in August 2014 the Glimmer Glass Bridge was damaged by an overweight truck and has been closed to vehicular traffic since then. On October 1 st the bridge was closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic as well so that emergency repairs can be made by George Harms Construction Co., Inc. over the as part of Monmouth County’s repair project. The work is expected to be completed over the next seven months and includes driving new 14 inch and 12 inch diameter wood piles, installing new tie-rods and timber wales, reinforcing existing piling with pile jackets and replacing the timber deck. After notice to proceed, George Harms Construction Co., Inc. immediately mobilized to the site and began driving piles on October 3 rd using a Vulcan#1 single acting air hammer. A total of 29 new 14 inch diameter by 60 feet long wood piles will be driven at the approaches to the bridge and 1-1/2 inch diameter tie-rods will be installed in order to stabilize the existing bulkheads. There will be 7 new 12 inch diameter by 55 feet long wood piles driven below the roadway surface at the East approach (for a 12 in x 12 in timber drag wale/deadman) and will be connected to the other new piles with tie-rods. The pile driving work is underway and the emergency repairs will provide new life to a unique and historic bridge that continues to endure! According to the county, the original bridge was built around 1898 as a fixed temporary span over the Point Pleasant canal but it was stockpiled by the state Department of Transportation after it wasn’t used, according to county officials. Monmouth County bought it from the state for $1 in 1938 when it needed to replace a fixed timber bridge over the Glimmer Glass Creek. On August 13, 1939, the current cable-lift bascule span bridge opened and began accommodating both marine and vehicle traffic. The bridge was refurbished in the 1950s and 1970s when the original components were replaced. The Glimmer Glass Bridge uses a rolling counterweight design to open. PDCA-N.E.
