The Seventh Lunar Month (農曆七月) is commonly known as the "Ghost Month" (鬼月). In urban legends, the hell gate will be open during this month, and will be closed at the 29th day of the month (2011/7/31~8/28).
Based on recent researches, the Seventh Lunar Month in ancient periods were used to be an auspicious month. JhuYuanJhang (朱元璋), the emperor and the founder of Ming Dynasty, believed in Fengshui (風水) and did not allow folks and the royal families sharing the auspicious time of the auspicious day, therefore he sent out fake Taoists and spread rumors that the Seventh Lunar Month is the unlucky Ghosts Month.
Taiwanese immigrating after the Ming Dynasty, completely transplanted the
pseudo customs to Taiwan. It accidentally becomes the only group of Chinese that keeps the custom of the Ghost Month.
There are two big festivals during this month: Cisi (七夕, the 7th day of the Seven Lunar Month, 2011/8/6) & Jhongyuan Festival (中元節, the 15th day of the Seven Lunar Month, 2011/8/14).
The 15th day of the Seventh Lunar Month (農曆七月十五, 2011/8/14) is called "Jhongyuan Festival" (中元節) by Taoism, and nicknamed the "Ghost Festival" (鬼節). According to the legends, the hell gate will be open during the Seventh Lunar Month for a month. All unclaimed souls will come out from the underworld and accept people's support in this world.
