The Forest for the Trees: Observing Grammar in Academic Writing When most ESL teachers talk about grammar in the context of academic writing, the focus is almost always on errors in student writing. Common teacher comments include: “You need to use a gerund here.” “That’s not the right verb tense to use in a conditional sentence like that.” “You need the here, not an.” To be certain, errors in ESL writing can matter. However, even if you correct the ESL errors targeted in these three teacher comments, there are still grammatical differences between how an ESL writer and a peer native writer compose their English to complete common college writing tasks, and these differences go way beyond mere errors. Most of us who teach writing have not considered these important differences, however, because we have been so focused on the obvious and frustrating errors. In this keynote address, we will consider what grammar for writing might focus on by comparing an ESL writer’s work with that of a peer college native writer. The mistakes are obvious differences, but a more careful eye can go beyond the errors to look at other important differences, that is, the proverbial “forest for the trees.”

In this session, an experienced writing teacher explains how the new series Grammar for Great Writing addresses all of these important questions. Samples will be provided.

Michelle Peterson, Reading Junior High School, Lamar Consolidated ISD

Michelle Peterson is motivated to inspire students to crave the process of learning. She is driven by reaching for that moment when the “light bulb” turns on for students and they truly fall in love with the literature, science, history, the power of knowing the calculation, the written word, the language, and learning. Michelle is the ESL teacher at Reading Jr. High in Lamar Consolidated ISD where her colleagues know her as the ESL Warrior. She attends staff development throughout the summer in order to grow in knowledge of how to serve best her students and shares strategies for language acquisition with the staff at her campus. Last year, she helped her school achieve a 1-year growth in TELPAS.

She meets with students during her lunch period, makes sure they are checking their grades, and meets with them on her off-periods to tutor. She makes a safe and comfortable environment in which students are responsive to her gentle coaching She arranges her schedule so that she can go into other teachers' classrooms and give assistance to the students in need. Ms. Peterson is excited when students are upset that their time with her has ended, and they look forward to continuing. She specifically enjoys watching the transformations and accomplishments of her ESL students as they gain faith in themselves. She truly lives the life of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.

Ms Peterson strongly believes that learning is a life-long process and trusts that effective learning requires collaboration between teacher, students, and parents; that collaboration equals power. She considers herself still as much an avid student as teacher. Erica Mendoza, Baker-Ripley Charter School, Promise Community Schools

Erica Mendoza is currently a math teacher for 5th and 6th grade students. She loves teaching and enjoying the exploring, learning, and daily interactions with students. She has had students in her classroom whose home languages range from Spanish, to Arabic, Pashto, and Urdu. Ms. Mendoza, with her calming and welcoming demeanor, ensures that her students feel comfortable enough to speak, write and problem solve with math in a way that allows students to practice in multiple modalities. Over 90% of her students passed the STAAR math test, which showed a testament to the rigor her classroom. Ms. Mendoza is not a “typical” teacher who is quick to speak. She carries herself in a calm way that allows students to be themselves in the classroom and be successful while doing it. She received her undergraduate degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Psychology and Sociology and is currently working on a Master’s degree in Education Administration. Ms Mendoza finds that the best thing about teaching English to speakers of other languages is helping students communicate more easily and build relationships with their classmates. She hopes to continue working with students for many years.

Elva Williams, North Shore High School, Galena Park ISD For the past 20 years, Elva Williams has worked to help others reach their full potential and discover a passion for learning. Six years were spent in Turks and Caicos as a missionary working with families in the community and teaching English to Haitian and Dominican students with limited education opportunities. She has been in Galena Park ISD for over 12 years teaching Spanish, and currently, English to Newcomers. In the summer of 2008, she taught English and American culture at a secondary school in China. In past years, she has been the sponsor of the multicultural committee at her campus. She is committed to transmitting her love for traveling, languages and respect for cultures as shown by taking students on trips including Costa Rica, Spain, Germany, and Washington D.C.

Each year, over 100 foreign students from over a dozen countries arrive at North Shore High School as their inaugural experience in an American school. Many are lost, bewildered and know little of the language or culture in which they find themselves surrounded. They find refuge in the class of Elva Williams, the New Arrival Center (NAC) teacher. Ms. Williams serves as a master ESL teacher, life-long learner, TexTESOL presenter, advocate and confidant to NAC families. She understands the value of inviting NAC students to be a part school culture while maintaining their own. She enjoys sharing knowledge and experience with colleagues and community, and does this through participation in the GPISD annual Bilingual Mini-Conference, the Literature and Literacy conference, and curriculum writing for the New Arrival Center. Elva Williams is most proud of, and receives greatest joy from, seeing students return grateful for having obtained a college degree or a successful job after having overcome many difficulties and obstacles and making a positive impact in the communities in which they live.

Carmen Güereque, Galena Park ISD Carmen Guereqeue has dedicated her life to education and raising her family. Born and raised in Galena Park to a family of immigrants, English is her second language. Ms Guereque knows first-hand what it is like to sit in an ESL classroom - the stigma, the joy, and the challenges. She has taken her experiences as an ESL student, mother, wife, and Latina, and used this knowledge and insight to offer high quality education to her ELL students. She understands the importance of having high expectations in the classroom and how crucial it is for educators to facilitate the growth of children’s minds, spirits, and social interaction. Ms Guereque provides a nurturing language education for all ELL students she encounters, whether in her class or not. She is a strong activist within her community and has grown professionally by obtaining her Master's Degree in School Counseling. Her professional and personal goals continue to consist of addressing

the academic, social, financial, and emotional well-being of her students and of the community which she serves and calls home. Ms Guereque’s success in the classroom can be attributed to loving her profession, plus a commitment to personal and professional growth. Her mantra is “Reaching students minds through their hearts, souls, and families!”

Caroline LeBlanc, Progressive High School, Fort Bend ISD

Caroline LeBlanc grew up in a family which had many close friends from various cultures, countries, races, and languages. She has always enjoyed being with and talking with those who can share experiences different from her own. Thus, when she decided to leave the business world for a teaching certificate via the Region IV Alternative Certification program, she immediately knew becoming an ESL teacher was the right choice for her. Caroline taught three years in Aldine ISD, spent five years as a private tutor for Dutch students from Awty International School, and taught 15 years in Fort Bend ISD at the middle and high school levels.

Ms LeBlanc is the lead ESL teacher at the new Language Immersion Center for 11th and 12th grade English Language Learners in Fort Bend ISD. She has guided this new, innovative program through its early stages of development. In addition to teaching ESOL classes, she trains her campus colleagues in sheltered instruction strategies. She has demonstrated a personal commitment to her ELLs by launching a backpack program at her campus that allows these older teens to leave a backpack in a discreet location to be filled with toiletries and to use a campus laundry facility. Caroline states, “Although I have enjoyed many leadership and staff develop presentation opportunities, it is my time in the classroom with my students that I treasure most”. She has never lagged in her commitment to advocate on their behalf and provide excellent instruction.

Susan Abbasi, Baker-Ripley Charter School Susan Abbasi is the 5th and 6th grade ELA teacher at Baker-Ripley Charter School. She is an exceptionally dedicated teacher who works with students who have many home languages and at many levels of English learning. She does the important things that a great ESL teacher does -- like differentiating, using stations, etc. More than that, however, Susan is constantly striving to incorporate her students' cultural backgrounds into the classroom. For example, many of her students are from Afghanistan, and so Susan is reading the autobiography of Malala with her class. This is a high expectation, as many of her students are advanced-beginners in English, and yet Susan maintains her belief that all students can read challenging text. Susan also encourages students to express themselves, writing poetry and plays in English – even her students who are beginning English learners proudly put their poems up on the walls of the campus. She also activates her students’ interests in the community – last year her students did a research project called “How can we make our community sweeter?” Students were calculating the square footage of the school to determine whether solar panels would be a viable energy option! Susan Abbasi truly believes that her students have a critical and important voice to share with the community, and she facilitates to make that happen. Satyra Smith, Baker-Ripley Charter School Satyra Smith is a math and science teacher Houston’s East End who seeks out opportunities for growth as a professional to better support her students and colleagues. She has the ability to maximize her strengths and approach obstacles with a positive mindset. Ms Smith is completely dedicated to her 4th grade students. She thinks about ways to make math and science accessible considering their linguistic abilities. Many of her students speak primarily Spanish at home or come from a bilingual household. Keeping in mind that bilingualism is an asset, she also focuses on ensuring that her students develop the academic language necessary to be successful in her classroom and on into middle school. What makes Ms. Smith such an important teacher, is that she not only focuses on making students and teachers better on her campus. She also focuses on developing and investing in others in our partner campus to ensure they also work with best practices. Satyra Smith is a true leader in her school.

Becoming Cultural Responsive

It is imperative that children from ethnically, linguistically and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds have educators who are culturally competent and have the skills and ability to successfully teach students who come from a culture or cultures other than their own. Cultural competence can be learned, practiced, and institutionalized to better serve diverse students, their families, and their communities. This valuable and timely presentation will clearly define the components of cultural proficiency, outline the cultural proficiency continuum and provide participants with ideas on how to become culturally proficient by valuing diversity, being culturally self-aware, understanding the dynamics of difference and the importance of knowing students' culture.
