Texecom Premier Elite Alarm Systems Overview
This article is intended to help you build an extremely sophisticated hard-wired or hybrid
(hard-wired & wireless) alarm system using the Texecom Premier Elite range of control
panels and peripherals. It is recommended to read this on-line as the clickable links will take

Introduction The Texecom Premier Elite alarm systems are extremely sophisticated, yet flexible, and are
suitable for use in residential, commercial and large industrial installations. The systems are

built around a range of Hard-wired and Hybrid control panels which, when coupled with the
large range of wired and wireless detectors, sounders and communications modules, result
in a very secure and versatile alarm system.
A great advantage of Texecom as a manufacturer is the ability to build a top-quality system
using mainly Texecom products. This really comes into its own when it comes to any
support issues. Of all the companies we deal with, Texecom come out in first place for their
product support, not only for professional installers but also for DIYers and hobbyists. It is
well worth registering as a hobbyist on the Texecom Forum in order to get help and advice
from other hobbyists and professional installers.
Modern alarm systems usually have a multitude of features and as such their setup
becomes more and more complex. Having said that, installing a Premier Elite system is well
within the capabilities of a good DIY person once the basic principles of alarm systems are
understood. After the system has been setup as a basic working alarm system, the system
can be tweaked to suit the end-user’s requirements, incorporating features such as remote
monitoring and control.
All burglar alarm systems comprise three main parts: Control Panel & RKPs, Detectors and
Signalling. These are further explained below.
Control Panels Texecom supply two ranges of Premier Elite alarm control panels – conventional hard-wired
and wireless (Ricochet) enabled hybrid panels.
Hard-wired control panels are all supplied with eight hard-wired zones (0 on the 640) and
can be fitted with hard-wired or wireless expanders up to the maximum no of zones allowed.
Hybrid control panels have four hard-wired zones and up to 32 wireless zones pre-installed.
All peripheral devices on the system connect to the control panel either via hard-wired
cables or wirelessly. All the Texecom hard-wired control panels require one or more Remote
Keypads (RKPs) in order to program* and operate* the system. The Premier Elite (NOT
Premier) RKPs have connections for 2 hard wired zones, but note that these are not
additional zones but are mapped to existing zones on the control panel.
There is also the 12-W LIVE control panel which has an on-panel keypad.
*Programming and operation can be carried out remotely using Wintex Software, but at least
one RKP has to be connected.
Hard-Wired Panels
For most domestic and small commercial installations the Premier 24 or 48 will be adequate.
The Premier 24 is available in Polycarbonate or Powder-coated Metal. The advantages of
the Metal version are that the casing is far more robust, it will accept up to 2 x 7.0Ah
batteries and its auxiliary power supply (for powered detectors and other devices) is rated at

1.5 Amp rather than the 1.0 Amp with the Polycarbonate version. The drawback is that the
Metal Panel is larger and heavier.
In summary, if you require a relatively small installation and the control panel is to be hidden
away (recommended), the Premier 24 Poly will suffice. If you need a more robust panel then
the Metal version is the one to choose. If you want more than 24 zones or you want more
areas then the Premier 48 (and above) will be needed.
Hard-wired Control panels are supplied with 8 on-board zones and are expandable using
wired (8XE – Premier 24 only, or 8XP) expanders, or wireless (8XP-W, or 32XP-W)
expanders up to the maximum number of panel zones. For example a Premier Elite 24 can
have up to another 16 zones added which can be any combination of wired or wireless
expanders. Note that the Premier 24 can only have one 8XE expander fitted; extra
expanders must be either 8XP or 8XP-W expanders. If a 32XP-W expander is fitted to a
Premier 24 Control Panel then only 16 of the zones available on the expander can be used.
Hard-wired zones can have one or more detectors connected to them. It is recommended to
have one detector per zone but sometimes it may be a lot easier to have two or more
detectors daisy-chained together and brought back to the panel on a single cable. In the
case of wireless zones, only one detector can be assigned to a zone.

Hybrid Control Panels – Ricochet – Key Features
The hybrid control panels have the wireless receiver built-in and as such they are
Polycarbonate cased. They are supplied with 4 hard-wired zones. The number of hard-
wired zones can be increased using 8XP expanders – up to the maximum no of zones
allowed by the panel. The alarm system can be armed/disarmed using Smartkeys (GCC-
0001). The number of Smartkeys is limited to the number of users allowed on the panel.

Expanding the Control Panel
All the panels (except the 640) are supplied with 8 fully programmable zones. Each panel
can be expanded by the addition of 8 zone hard-wired expanders or wireless expanders.
The maximum number of expanders that can be installed is shown in the tables above. NB:
The Premier 24 panel can be expanded to 16 zones using the Plug-on 8XE Expander and
up to 24 zones using an additional 8XP expander. The Premier Elite 48, 88,168 and 640
panels are NOT compatible with the 8XE expander - 8XP Expanders must be used. Also
note that the 8XE expander is not compatible with the Premier Elite 24-W – the on-board
wireless expander uses the slot that the 8XE uses.

Remote Keypads (RKPs)
Premier Control Panels require at least one RKP. Hybrid panels termed ‘Live’ have an on-
panel keypad for programming and control. They can also have one or more RKPs
connected. At the time of writing there is not a wireless RKP available for any of the panels.
There are a lot of different RKP options ranging from the simple surface-mount LCD, through
to flush-mounted LCD units with Proximity readers and stylish finishes. All the RKPs have
backlit and touchtone keys, 2 additional zones, and 1 programmable output. The flush-mount
and the Large-display RKPs can have an extension speaker fitted. See the Full Range of
compatible RKPs.
Any combination of RKPs can be connected to a Control Panel up to the maximum allowed
for that panel - see tables above.

Premier Elite RKPs – Surface Mount
These RKPs are designed to be surface-mounted. They can be fitted flush-mounted by
using the flush mount back-box (DBE-0002). The RKPs listed in the Flush-mount table have
the back-box pre-fitted. All have a large display, Proximity Reader, 2 x mappable zones and
a speaker connection.

Premier Elite RKPs – Flush-mount
These RKPs are designed to be flush-mounted. They require a recessed hole at least
40mm deep x 155mm wide x 110mm high. All have a large display, Proximity Reader, 2 x
mappable zones and a speaker connection.

Control Panel Batteries All alarm systems need a rechargeable Sealed Lead Acid back-up battery in order to
maintain the alarm system during a power cut. The Premier 24 Polycarbonate panel can

accept up to ONE 12v 7.0Ah rechargeable battery. The Premier 24 Metal and the 48
upwards can accept up to 1 x 12v 17Ah rechargeable battery or 2 x 12v 7.0Ah batteries. The
battery required depends on the power drawn by the panel and the powered devices on the
system. As a rough guide a 7.0Ah battery will give 12 hours back-up on a system with
around 12 PIRs.
Detectors Texecom manufacture a wide range of hard-wired and wireless detectors.
Hard-wired detectors

Detectors for hard-wired zones can also be sourced from Texecom or any of the main alarm
equipment manufacturers such as Pyronix, Eaton (Scantronic), Optex, CQR. Under normal
circumstances, using Double Pole wiring, the detectors should be Normally Closed devices,
i.e. in a non-alarm state electrical current is allowed to flow through the detector and when
the detector is in an alarm state the current flow is interrupted and the zone signals an alarm
condition. Detectors wired as double pole require 2 cores for alarm (connected to zone
terminals) and 2 cores for the tamper circuit (daisy-chained into the global tamper circuit -
Aux/Fault terminals on the panel)
There is also another (more secure) wiring method known as Fully Supervised Loop (FSL) or
Double EOL. This wiring method relies on the zone ‘seeing’ different resistor values for
different states of alarm. An explanation of FSL wiring is in the article Designing an FSL
System.
The Texecom Premier Elite control panels are versatile in that individual zones can be set to
use a wide range of wiring schemes including Normally Open devices (e.g. pressure mats).
Detectors are available from Texecom, and other main manufacturers, with the resistors for
FSL wiring built into the detector. These detectors can also be used in double pole wiring by
disabling the resistors.
Texecom Premier Elite control panels are supplied with packs of 2k2 and 4k7 resistors for
use in an FSL system with detectors which don’t have built in resistors. The resistors should
be fitted at the detector.
Wireless Detectors & Devices
Texecom have developed a wireless system known as Ricochet. The Ricochet system is
unique in that each wireless detector on the system can automatically act as a repeater if
required. This results in an extremely robust wireless network being established. Only one
wireless detector can be enrolled to a wireless zone. Unless specified (e.g. some GJD
detectors) only Texecom Ricochet wireless detectors can be enrolled.

Rather confusingly Texecom have Premier Wireless PIRs and also Premier Elite Wireless
PIRs. The difference is in the design and a small reduction in the detection range of the
non-elite. Also note that there is not a Pet-friendly or Ceiling-mount Premier Elite PIR, and
that there is not a Dual Technology Premier PIR.

Signalling When an alarm condition occurs it needs to be signalled or reported.
Sounders –hard-wired
The most common alarm signalling method is audible using internal and/or external
sounders. All the control panels, wired and hybrid can have one or more hard-wired
sounders connected. External sounders and some internal sounders are usually SAB/SCB
types and are powered from the control panel and as such, due to the power available from
the panel, there is a limit to the number of hard wired sounders. The Texecom Odyssey
sounders can be set to operate in three modes – SAB, Low Current SAB and SCB. A typical
installation with more than one hard-wired sounder will have the main sounder set to SAB
mode and any others set to Low Current SAB or SCB mode. In SCB mode, the sounder is
powered from its internal battery. The table below shows the power consumption of the
standard (STD) and Economy (E) Odyssey sounders in their various modes. They all
consume 18mA in quiescent (non-alarm) state.

The control panel sounder output is protected by a 1.0 Amp fuse and it is recommended that
the total sounder load is kept below this – preferably less than 800mA.
The volume output is 115dB for the STD model and 109dB for the E model. The volume is
slightly reduced when operating in LC SAB mode and noticeably reduced in SCB mode.
All the Odyssey series of sounders incorporate an pre-fitted internal battery, Twin Flashing
LEDs and Strobe light.

Sounders – Wireless
The wireless control panels can utilise the range of Odyssey wireless sounders. The
sounders are battery operated with a typical battery life of 2 to 3 years (depends on usage).
The number of wireless sounders that can be enrolled is limited only by the number of
wireless zones available – each wireless sounder requires one wireless zone.
Speech Diallers
Additionally, the alarm can be signalled using an add-on Speech/Text (PSTN) dialler or GSM
(Cellular) dialler. The alarm can also be controlled by using the diallers to dial into the
control panel.
Local (LAN) & Remote (WAN) Access All the Premier range panels can be accessed locally by using either the COM-2400 modem
or the USB-COM. Note that the COM-2400 can also send SMS messages - see below. The
Premier Elite panels can be accessed from a PC remotely (WAN - Internet) using the IP-
COM module. The local or remote PC requires the Wintex Software installed on the
Windows operating system.
The COM-2400 uses the TAP service to send SMS messages.
The alarm can also be monitored, controlled and notifications sent over the internet using the
COM-IP or COMWiFi modules.
The IP-COM and COM-WiFi modules connect to the panel via the internet and connect to
free Android and I-Os apps. The Apps can be used to view the status of the panel, perform
programming tasks, control the system and send push notifications. The Apps can also
display the video from up to four IP cameras. See the article Texecom ComWiFi Module

Design Example The following example illustrates the design process for a typical domestic installation.
The Property
Purely for the purpose of this installation our property is an imaginary 4 bedroom house as
shown in the diagram. It is proposed to only alarm the ground floor as there is no easy
access to the first floor.
There is also a detached garage and shed which are going to be protected by wireless
detectors. We could also protect some parts of the main house with wireless detectors
instead of wired.

For the hard-wired part of the house we have a total of 9 detectors (5 x PIR & 4 Magnetic
Contacts). The Premier Elite control panels have 8 hard-wired zones as standard. We
could accommodate our 9 detectors onto the 8 zones by doubling up 2 of the detectors (say
the two magnetic contacts at the rear doors) onto one zone, but it is probably better to
expand the panel to 16 zones using an eight zone hard-wired expander (8XP, or 8XE on the
24 panel only). The expansion will allow further detectors, such as smoke detectors, to be
added in future.
For our outbuildings, let’s assume we need 1 x PIR and 2 door contacts. Because the
wireless PIR is being fitted in a rather dirty garage it is better to use the Dual Technology
version in order to minimise false alarms.
In order to use the wireless detectors we need to fit a wireless expander to the control panel.
Two wireless expanders are available, the 8 zone 8XP-W and the 32 zone 32XP-W. In our
scenario, the 8XP-W is sufficient. This will give us 5 free wireless zones which can be used
for additional detectors or sounders.

Control Panel
Based on our system the smallest control panel that fits our needs is the Premier Elite 24
(poly or metal) or the Premier Elite 24-W.
Option 1. If we use the Premier Elite 24 then we need 1 x 8XE expander (Plug-on) or 1 x
8XP expander (boxed), and 1 x 8XP-W wireless expander. This will result in 7 free wired
zones and 5 free wireless zones being available for future use.
Option 2. If we use the Premier Elite 24-W we need 1 x 8XP expander. Note; the 8XE
expander cannot be used on the 24-W panel. This will result in 3 free wired zones and 13
free wireless zones.
We have decided to fit the control panel out of sight in the cupboard beneath the stairs.
Conveniently, there is also a mains power source nearby.
We have decided to use Option 1.
Battery
The control panel needs a 12v sealed lead/acid rechargeable back-up battery. The Premier
Elite 24 (poly) and the Premier Elite 24-W can both accommodate any sized battery up to
7.0Ah. The Premier Elite 24 (metal) can accommodate any size battery up to 2 x 7.0Ah.
Remote Keypads(RKPs)
Both the aforementioned panels require at least one RKP to be fitted. There are a wide
range of Texecom RKPs ranging from the basic Premier LCD up to the Premier Elite models
with contemporary finishes, proximity readers and mappable zones. The Premier Elite
models are also available in surface or flush mount versions.
Our installation requires two RKPs such that we can access the property through either the
front entrance door or the door into the utility room. The RKP in the hall will be one from the
Premier Elite range with a chrome finish. The RKP in the utility room can be just a basic
Premier LCDP with proximity reader. The choice is yours.
Detectors
The choice of hard-wired detectors is somewhat dependent on the wiring scheme we are
going to use.
The Texecom Premier Elite control panels can use a variety of types of wiring for the zones,
the main two types are Double Pole (aka as Conventional Closed Loop, CCL) and Fully
Supervised Loop (FSL). Each zone can be set to use any of the available wiring types.
Double Pole wiring uses two cores for the Alarm circuit and two cores for the Tamper circuit,
FSL wiring uses just two cores to carry both the alarm and tamper circuits. FSL achieves
this by using resistors to differentiate between alarms and tamper conditions.
Texecom Premier and Premier Elite PIR detectors (not Premier Elite Petwise models) are
fitted with selectable resistors to allow them to be used with not only the Texecom premier
Elite panels but also with panels from other manufacturers which require other resistance
values. Detectors with selectable resistors can also be used in Double Pole installations.

The Premier Elite control panels are supplied with a pack of the correct value resistors
(2k2Ω & 4k7Ω) for the Texecom panels. The resistors are used when installing detectors
without the resistors built-in.
For the door magnetic contacts we can use plain NC contacts and fit resistors into the
contacts, or use contacts with built in resistors. Because our doors are PVC we will have to
use surface contacts. If the doors were wood we could use flush contacts.
In our installation, we have decided to use FSL wiring for two reasons – firstly it is more
secure and secondly it will slightly reduce the cabling required.
When it comes to the wireless detectors it is simply a matter of enrolling them onto the
system and fitting them in position. It is important to remember not to fit wireless detectors
near metal (particularly ferrous) structures.
Audible Signalling - Sounders
We have decided to fit two external sounders – one at the front and one at the rear.
Because of the wiring run required to the rear we have decided to use one hard-wired
sounder to the front and a wireless one to the rear.
Any make of hard-wired sounder will connect to the control panel, however the Texecom
odyssey range are well proven and as such that is what we propose to use.
As previously mentioned, the Odyssey Hard-Wired Sounders are available in two versions –
STD (115dB) and Economy (109dB), and in 6 styles.
The Odyssey Wireless Sounders are also available in 5 shapes.
Texecom have also recently (2015) introduced the Odyssey X Hard-Wired Sounders which
are available in standard (Odyssey X) and economy (Odyssey X-E). They are also available
in backlit versions (Odyssey X-B and X-BE). Odyssey X covers are available in Rectangular
Portrait (X1) or Shield (X3) shapes and in various colour combinations.
We have also decided to fit an internal siren in an inaccessible position in the hallway.
Remote Signalling
There are a couple of ways that the alarm can be signalled remotely – via a speech/text
dialler (PSTN or GSM) or via the internet using the ComWifi or Com-IP modules.
We have chosen to use the ComWiFi module which will send us push notifications to the
app on our mobile devices. The alarm can also be controlled through the app. In addition
the ComWifi can also connect to the Wintex software for easier programming of the system.
Note: there are two versions of the ComWiFi module the CEK-0001 for poly panels and the
CEK-0002 SMA for metal panels. The latter requires the supplied aerial to be fitted to the
outside of the control panel.

Cabling
For our hard-wired system we need to connect it all together using cables. The best cable to
use is cable manufactured specifically for alarm systems. CAT5 cable (8 core) can be used
but if it is to carry 12v power then it may be advisable to double-up the power cores.
Because we are using FSL wiring we need 4 cores for a PIR (2 for 12v power, 2 for
alarm/tamper) and 2 cores for a magnetic contact. We need 5 cores for the hard-wired
external sounder. We need 4 cores for the RKPs. In many cases more than one detector or
device can be brought back to the panel on a single cable. For example the 2 PIRs and 2
Door contacts can be connected to the panel using 2 x 6 core cables or even 1 x 6 core and
1 x 4 core cable.
In general, it is good practice to run 6 core or even 8 core and just use the cores required.
Any spare cores can be used for future expansion or as extra power cores..
Note: there are 3 types of alarm cable commonly used – CCA (Copper Clad Aluminium), SC
(Solid Copper) and Screened SC. CCA cable is fine for relatively short cable runs, SC Cable
for extended cable runs, and Screened SC for situations where there is a lot of electrical
interference. Electrical interference can occur when alarm cable is run parallel to mains
cable, where heavy electrical machinery is switched, or near choke type fluorescent lighting.
Our range of Alarm Cables includes all the above.
Cabling to powered detectors (e.g. PIRs) longer than 100m may suffer from a significant
voltage drop. This can usually be overcome by doubling-up the power cores in the cable.
For example, using a 6-core cable to a PIR wired FSL.

Based on the above design our shopping list may look like the one below. Obviously this is
an artificial example but should give an insight into the design. Also bear in mind that
Texecom supply a few heavily discounted kits, and as such it may be better to choose a kit
near to your requirements and add any extras to it.

The above system can be expanded using hard-wired or wireless devices – there are 7
hard-wired zones and 5 wireless zones available.
