DIRECTOR’S NOTE
At the start of the school year, I posed a question to the student artists you will see in this concert: What can we do that we have never done before? What if we completely REIMAGINE what we have always done?
The result is this concert of 10 dance films choreographed by students, faculty, and guest artists
and filmed with appropriate health and safety measures in place for the environments within which each dance was produced. Since September, students have rehearsed in a variety of spaces and distances, on Zoom and in studio, in person and with the help of technology. They have learned to dance for all kinds of cameras, in all kinds of locations, on all kinds of surfaces, and sometimes with very little rehearsal. They have become directors and editors and camera operators and actors and the ultimate collaborators. In each step of the process they REIMAGINE(d) what it means to be a dancer.
The cornerstone of REIMAGINE is RABBIT HOLE, a series of 26 solos for the members of Academy Dance Company, choreographed by 13 faculty and guest artists. Each solo explores the concept of a RABBIT HOLE - literal or figurative, literary or online - and encourages the dancer to dive into a unique interpretation of their own RABBIT HOLE. Soloists were paired with choreographers and assisted in creative research for their dances, learned their material remotely, rehearsed individually, and performed for the camera. I am indebted to each guest artist for the time they invested in this project across time zones and work schedules and their willingness to go down the RABBIT HOLE with me. RABBIT HOLE also features the talents of local cinematographer, Ron Gonzalez. I cannot thank Ron enough for his expertise and hospitality, and I must also thank the Faculty Chair of the FWAFA Department of Theatre, Lindy Davis, for bringing him onboard this year as we all work to REIMAGINE what our students can do creatively and safely.
We hope you enjoy watching this concert as much as we have enjoyed crafting it for you. While there were difficult moments, we are so grateful for the opportunity to bring you what we REIMAGINE!

Texas Center for Arts + Academics is a multi-faceted organization focused on youth development through arts-based programs and has been in operation in some form for more than 70 years. Beginning first as Texas Boys Choir, a GRAMMY® Award-winning professional choir, the mission and purpose of the organization expanded to include a variety of programs including two arts-based public charter schools, two new conservatories, summer camps, and numerous outreach programs which give performances and arts experiences to our community’s most vulnerable children.
Texas Center for Arts + Academics is comprised of two Texas charter schools – Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts (FWAFA) and Texas School of the Arts (TeSA) – as well as Texas Boys Choir; Texas Dance Conservatory; Texas Art Conservatory; and Community Boys Choir, an affiliate of Texas Boys Choir. Based in Fort Worth, just under 1,000 young people are enrolled in TCA+A’s programs each year, while thousands locally, nationally, and internationally benefit from performances and outreach efforts.
