TAFE MissionTAFE encourages students to learn about careers in education and assists them in exploring the teaching profession while promoting character, service, and leadership skills necessary for becoming effective educators.

Welcome to the Teach Tomorrow Summit!The TAFE Board of Directors is delighted that you have chosen to join more than 2,100 other Future Educators for three days of learning, sharing and fun! You have opportunities to hear exceptional keynote speakers and attend discussion group sessions presented by other TAFE Chapters with new ideas and strategies to help your chapter make a difference in your school and community.

Student Behavior: With the conference totaling more than 2,100 delegates, it is necessary that advisors sit with their students during the general sessions and monitor the behavior of their students during the conference. Always treat speakers and presenters with courtesy and respect.

TAFE Dress Code: The personal appearance and grooming of TAFE student leaders should uphold the professional image of the Texas Association of Future Educators. Student professional dress is required during the competitive events, all general sessions and other activities of the Teach Tomorrow Summit unless otherwise stated in the conference program. Students will not be allowed to compete or walk across stage or attend events unless they are dressed in accordance with the following dress code.

Females: Dressy/Modest Shirt/Blouse with Sleeves (button-up, collared, polo, or shallow neckline is acceptable) • Dress slacks or Maxi skirt/Maxi dress (with slits no higher than the knee) – No tight-fitting skirts • Optional sweater or jacket • Closed toed shoes (not athletic or sandals) (maximum 3” heel) • NO backless, see-through, tight-fitting, spaghetti straps, midriffs, strapless, low-cut, etc. attire allowed

Males: Collared shirt • Dress slacks or khakis • Optional necktie • Optional jacket • Dress shoes (not athletic or sandals) (dressy western boots & loafers allowed)

All: Clean and neatly groomed (wrinkle-free/non-overly tight) • Body piercing and tattoos covered at all times • Conference name badge worn for competition & awards • NO shorts are allowed

Cell Phones: Cell phones, iPods, or other electronic devices are to have ringers turned off and are NOT to be used during any conference activity. We ask that both teacher leaders and students follow this guideline. Please be a model of consideration and respect for all who are attending conference sessions.

Controlled Substances: The use or possession of alcohol, tobacco, or other illegal drugs is strictly prohibited.

Each candidate school will be called on by the Master of Ceremonies. The officer candidate will be called on to give their platform speech. After the speech is given, each officer candidate will be asked two questions. One question will be a TAFE fact question, and one will be a thought question. Each chapter is allowed a maximum of one voting delegate. The Credentials Committee, which is overseen by the Vice President school, will distribute the ballots. The Tabulations Committee, which is overseen by the Secretary School, will count the ballots.

Sometimes, the thoughts become actions, such as “waiting without trying”. Future teachers will learn skills to evaluate their students, receive 5-minute mini-lessons for direct instruction, and tools to turn the culture of the classroom from “I can’t” to “I can”.

Richard Eglsaer, Ph.D.Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Sam Houston State University

Dr. Richard Eglsaer is a Professor of Psychology and serves as Sam Houston State University’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He has served as the Director of the SHSU School Psychology Program, Chair of the Department of Psychology, and Director of the SHSU Honors Program. Before becoming Provost, he served as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Vice Provost for 17 years. He has been active in SHSU’s recruitment and retention efforts. He also oversees SHSU’s efforts to develop articulation agreements with community colleges across the state, and SHSU’s multi-institutional teaching center at The Woodlands Center. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Art degrees from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. He completed his doctorate at The University of Texas at Austin.

Stacey L Edmonson, Ed.D.Dean of the College of Education at Sam Houston State University

Dr. Edmonson earned the rank of Professor of Educational Leadership and has previously served as Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling and as Director of the Center for Research and Doctoral Studies in Educational Leadership, as well as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator in Texas public schools. She has been Chair of the SHSU Faculty Senate and is currently the President-elect of both the Texas Association of Colleges of Teacher Education and the Teacher Education Council of State Colleges and Universities. She is a member of AASCU’s American Academic Leadership Institute and a site team leader (formerly called Board of Examiners chair) for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. Dr. Edmonson is former Executive Director of the Texas Council of Professors of Educational Administration and was recently selected to one of 10 positions, from more than 600 applicants, to serve on the State Board of Education’s Strategic Long-Range Planning Committee for the State of Texas.
