It was very exciting to see our students from Prep to Year 6 arrive so organised and ready to go. Our Prep students were excited and displayed a wonderful level of independence combined with an eagerness to start learning. It certainly was an impressive sight to see all of our students displaying brilliant smiles and perfect uniform standards right from Day 1. This is a scene that reflects our school community’s commitment to excellence. We have enjoyed a very smooth start to the year with all of our students displaying an excellent attitude and eagerness to commence their learning right from the start. Thank you to the wonderful work of all of our staff, P&C, volunteers and parents to prepare the school so well for our students. A special mention needs to be made of the outstanding talent of Angela Rae – our multiskilled Italian teacher. Over the school holidays Angela completed the mural in the undercover tuckshop area that highlights our wonderful healthy tuckshop as well as our school expectations – the right to respect, the right to safety and the right to active learning. I look forward to the year ahead as our students engage in their new learning challenges. I hope everyone had a terrific holiday and that you are back into the school routine. A very special welcome to all of the new families who have joined us at Tewantin for the first time in 2016. I hope that your children love their new school and all of their new friends. STARTING EXPECTATIONS As we all welcome our students to an exciting new year these first few weeks are also critical for ensuring that our high expectations in work, behaviour and uniform are conveyed to all students consistently. Also this is the time for students to know expectations of full compliance with our uniform code. Any student not meeting this requirement will be issued with a uniform note and reminded of the correct standard. A big thank you to all of our parents for your wonderful support in this area. PARENT INFORMATION MEETINGS All year levels will be conducting parent information meetings in the third or fourth week back at school. These sessions are a very important date on the school calendar and I encourage all parents to please try and attend. This is your opportunity to meet your child’s class teacher, find out about the classroom rules and routines, get the latest on this term’s units of work, find out about extra-curricular activities, or ask any questions that you may have. A special invitation will go home soon.

SCHOOLWIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOURSUPPORT (SWPBS)

What is Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Supportand how does it work at Tewantin State School?

Parents/caregivers of Tewantin State School students may wellhave heard of our successful Schoolwide Positive BehaviourSupport (SWPBS) Program.

SWPBS is a whole-school approach to creating a safe andsupportive environment that has a strong evidence-base and isused successfully in many Queensland state schools.

A safe and orderly school environment is important to learning.Disruptive classroom behaviour is known to interfere withlearning and is a cause of stress and concern for students, teachers and families.

Most children start school with the social skills they need forsuccess. They have learned these socially valued behavioursfrom their parents, families, carers, early childhood learningexperiences and their social networks. Children learnbehaviours very quickly, but often they may also learn "misrules"or behavioural errors.

The fastest way to turn problem behaviour around is byteaching students acceptable and appropriate ways to getwhat they need. At Tewantin State School, we reinforce theseteachings every day through a variety of supportive initiatives.

Our Tewantin State School Schoolwide Behaviour ExpectationsMatrix is contained within the newsletter for your current andfuture reference.

• Trying their best at all classroom activities, no matterwhat their ability with those activities are

• Ensuring everyone else in the classroom is learningby displaying appropriate behavior

• Letting the teacher know if something is challengingand more assistance is needed

• Helping other students who may need assistancewith their learning

Sheldon Boland - Deputy Principal (A)

CURRICULUM CORNERI am very excited to be writing my first article for the newsletteras the new Head of Curriculum. I have been appointed to therole replacing Tewantin’s previous Head of Curriculum, HeidiReitsma. I am passionate about how we as educators makea difference to a child’s life and I am pleased to be joiningthe wonderful team here at Tewantin. I am looking forward tomy new role working with the students, staff and the schoolcommunity to continue the great work that has come beforeme.

The school year for the Tewantin State School teachers beganwith three days of professional development and preparing forthe start of the school year with the students. Two of thesessions staff attended focused on Literacy and Numeracy.Regional Principal Education Advisors for Mathematics, RobProffitt-White and Peter Carmichael, presented a workshop onproblem solving and reasoning. In addition to this, the RegionalPrincipal Education Advisor for English, Sue Murphy, who hasbeen working with the Tewantin teachers in 2015 on theteaching of reading comprehension strategies, built further onthe teachers’ knowledge in this area.

Regional Principal Education Advisors provide wonderfulsupport to the region’s school and at Tewantin we are fortunateenough to have Sue continue to visit Tewantin and work withour teachers in 2016. To add to this, another of our region’sMathematics Advisors, Darren Clark, will be providingprofessional development and support for our teachers on theteaching of numeracy.

This year our teachers will build on the 2015 focus of teachingreading comprehension strategies. They will continue to providelearning opportunities for your child to develop and practisethese strategies. If our students are to succeed in school andin life, they must learn to read well, and the key to readingwell is comprehension. Research shows that proficient readersare active readers. They actively engage with the text using anumber of strategies to gain meaning from it. Researchers haveidentified key strategies important for reading comprehension. In the classrooms at Tewantin you will see these strategiesbeing taught to the students. Below is an outline of the readingcomprehension strategies being taught in Term One.

Tewantin State School students will surely beat the summerheat in and out of the pool this year thanks to a generousdonation.

The school sent out an S.O.S last year appealing for helpfrom the local community after internal issues meant themanagement of the pool was left high and dry.

One Agency principal Grant Baker said the decision to put hishand up and help was an easy one for himself and his wifeNatasha, who has been running the pool since February lastyear.

“It was only meant to be a six-week thing, but Natasha hasbeen there ever since, running things,” he said.

Through his company, Grant donated a shade cloth to theTewantin State School which now rests over an area of the poolkeeping kids and adults shaded from the summer sun.
