T.W.I.R.P. (The Week In Review / Preview)

Dear Family and Friends of BSUMC,

BSUMC is a can do church! The Spirit of the Lord is moving at the Broad Street UMC, no doubt about it. I went to my office on Sunday after service to find the room packed with eager volunteers for the planning session for the Community Dinner (this Saturday). Sandra Nutbrown and the Outreach Committee have worked hard to plan this event. Many organizations have contributed to make this a success as we reach out to needy folks in our neighborhood.

I learned that fifteen volunteers participated in the Kitchen Clean Up day last Saturday. On a previous Saturday workday eighteen volunteers gathered to make soup while ten men worked in the chapel cleaning out the fallen plaster. Last Sunday parents, grandparents and children filled our Toddler room as we experienced our fourth Family Clusters Christian education. Robin Moss joined our planning team. New families have begun attending BSUMC and have asked to unite with our church family. On Audrey Rachel Sunshine and Carley Rae Lovejoy recently

made their debut and will soon receive Christian baptism. Members and friends of BSUMC have been sharing their witnesses of faith each Sunday. Kyle and Sarah Harris have returned to Burlington and Sarah rejoined the choir. Our youth group is growing and Sarah Borgstrom is doing an awesome job of leading the MYP. The Confirmation class has added new members and continues to explore the faith in depth. Parents have volunteered to make meals, transport the youth and open their homes for the session. Lauri Sheppard recently repaired and gave new life to some old but good chairs for the pastor’s office. I found James Waitz and Walter Stout working on the windows of the Education building. Committee attendance is up. Our food pantry continues to thrive, as we are able to supply canned foods and dry goods to several local food pantries. Our Church Services are lively with many new volunteers serving as readers, pray-ers, greeters, musicians, power point operators and sound technicians. If you have noticed, our MYP is well represented week after week. The orchestra adds to the services twice a month. Sandy Gunn leads us in meaningful choir and congregational music balancing the traditional with the contemporary. In addition, we raised $35,500.00 towards our boiler fund of $45,000 in only ten months.

Looking at these signs of vitality moved me to think that we have a lot for which to thank God. God has not called us to be a big church. God has called us to be faithful witnesses of Christ here in Burlington City. If we do our part God will bring the increase. The Apostle Paul wrote, “One plants, another waters, but God makes it grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:6

Let us strive together to prove ourselves faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ. Find your niche and fulfill your ministry with all your mind, heart, soul, and strength. And then watch God pour out the blessings, Pastor Kim


CONFIRMATION CLASS

This week the confirmation class will examine the topic of Grace. Confirmation students should meet in the junior room for lunch following the worship service. Class will conclude at 2:45pm. -Sarah

CONFIRMATION RETREAT

On March 31, 2012 there will be a retreat for all confirmation

students from 9:15-3:30pm. Stay tuned for details!


MYP Road Trip

The MYP will head for heading to Audubon United Methodist Church for their youth led worship service on March 17th, 2012.

Please let Sarah know if you are interested in going so that she can arrange for transportation.

Choir rehearsals begin at 7:00 pm on March 1, March 8, March 15, March 22, March 29. Also, April 5 choir will start at 8 PM,

following the Maundy Thursday worship service.


Girlfriends of God will meet on March 4th at 8:00am at the

Wedgewood Diner.

New Adult Christian

Education Opportunity begins this Sunday at 9:30

DVD NOOMA series produced by Rob Bell

This week we will watch and discuss the DVD “Bullhorn” God loves everyone, so a Christian should, too. In fact, Jesus said that the most important thing in life is to love God with everything we've got and love other the same way. But it's not always easy to love everyone around us, is it? Sometimes we strongly disagree with other people's political views, religious beliefs, behaviors, or something else, and it makes it hard to love them when we feel like we're right and they're very wrong. But Jesus doesn't separate loving God and loving others. So maybe the best way for us to show our love for God is actually by loving other people no matter how hard it sometimes is. Maybe it's the only way. Topics: Condemnation, Loving Others, Unconditional Love, Judgment, Self-Righteousness


Every once in a while we need to look outside of ourselves and lend a bit of help to those in need. Yep, that’s what the BSUMC Outreach Committee does well. This Saturday from 1PM to 4PM Broad Street is hosting a Community Dinner and you can help, even if you can’t be there to help serve dinner. All the trimmings and sides have been bought but now we need the main dishes and desert. If you can donate a cooked ham or turkey please drop them off at the church kitchen Saturday morning from 10AM to 12 Noon in a disposable container. The same goes for desserts. To let the committee know how much additional meat and desserts have to be bought, email Sandra Nutbrown… [email protected] and let her know what you will bring. My apologies to those who were at the meeting after church…. I tried to write down what everyone said they were bringing…. But sadly I didn’t get it all. People who would like to help in the kitchen will meet in the church kitchen on Thursday at 4:30 PM. Dinner set up will start on Friday at 4:30 PM. Saturday morning preparations will begin at 9:30 AM. Thanks to everyone on the Committee for their hard work and to our congregation that always comes through when there is a need. -Lauri Sheppard
