Along with the volunteers from Barclays, she was delighted to interact with the bright and spirited young girls who sha red the i r l i f e ex p e r i en ces an d t h e i r aspirations for the future. While interacting with the girls , Priyanka Chopra shared, “Girls have the ability to build their own futures. I am glad to be associated with UNICEF Deepshikha programme that aims at empowering the

Delhi Daredevils Players enthrall adolescent girlsIn an effort to build the discourse around the need to empower, equip and enable adolescent girls, the Delhi Daredevils team , in par tnership with UNICEF interacted with a group of adolescent girls in Ahmedabad on May 16. This event was part of the national “Dare to Care” campaign – a joint initiative of UNICEF and the Delhi Daredevils – that urges Indian citizens and the large support base of Delhi Daredevils to actively advocate for the rights of adolescent girls, especially

young girls of India. My spirit runs parallel to the Deepshikha programme and I strongly advocate that parents, caregivers

and educators must give the girls more and more opportunities to grow in their life. I personally feel that our regular efforts in empowering the adolescent girls will contribute to the growth of our country”. Much to the delight of the girls, the actress enjoyed dancing with the girls present at the event. on a regional song. Started by UNICEF in 2008 in three remote districts of Maharashtra and a few slum communit ies in Mumbai, the Deepshikha programme has come a long way and has been scaled to other parts of the country. The programme focuses on empowering adolescent girls to become efficient leaders through education, life-skills, HIV & AIDS awareness and financial literacy.

Sachin Tendulkar bats for blind cricketInternational cricket icon and UNICEF South Asia Regional Ambassador Sachin Tendulkar in March visited a school for visually impaired children in Ratnagiri, the interior part of Maharashtra and taught them the technique of hand-wash and its importance. He also played cricket with the children. "It was remarkable to spend time with visually impaired children, who actually are so talented. I am equally fascinated by the way these kids play the game", said Tendulkar while interacting with the press. It was an equally memorable experience for the specially abled kids who enjoyed their interaction with the cricketing legend. The hand-wash event with visually impaired kids was also the cricketer's first outing for UNICEF since being made the UNICEF South Asia Regional Ambassador in November last year.

UNICEF Celebrates a 'Polio Free India' with Amitabh Bachchan

After Polio, Amitabh Bachchanto work for the girl childAfter collaborating with UNICEF for Polio eradication,

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan's next focus would be

women emancipation. The acting stalwart will now work as UN

ambassador for Girl Child and hopes of emulating the success that

they had with the polio eradication campaign. "Having worked

doggedly for the last many years to eradicate Polio from the

country, as UN ambassador for this fight, we have been able to put

off this endemic list. Now as UN ambassador for the Girl Child, I do

hope we can bring about the same changes as we did for Polio - rid

UNICEF India and ad agency McCann bagged an 'EFFIE' in the category Integrated Marketing and Advertising, for the well conceptualized 360 degree, nationwide communication campaign 'Malnutrition Quit India', with UNICEF Ambassador Aamir Khan. EFFIE is the premiere and most coveted showcase for effectiveness in marketing and advertising. Conceptualized and launched in the year 2012 by the Govt. of India with technical support from the UNICEF, the campaign worked towards creating increased public awareness on the different dimensions of malnutrition.

Amitabh Bachchan was felicitated by UNICEF at a ceremony

organized in New Delhi to celebrate India's triumph over

?polio. The actor who was greeted with a standing ovation from the

audience at the event said, “I am truly humbled to witness this day.

Initially, we were not getting as many mothers and children as we

wanted, to come to awareness camps. Then it was suggested that in

my films I am known for speaking loudly, so why could I not talk in

the same manner in the polio ads. When the ad began to be aired, in

places where one or two mothers would come, 150 started coming.

Sachin voices support to CWG fundraiser for childrenCricketer Sachin Tendulkar voiced his support to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games fundraiser for children to be held in July. Glasgow 2014, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and UNICEF entered into an important partnership, with the ambition of improving the lives of children in every country in the Commonwealth through raising money for the Children of the Commonwealth Fund, in the run-up to and during the Games. All money raised by UNICEF and Glasgow 2014 through the Opening Ceremony will go to UNICEF's Children of the Commonwealth Fund. Speaking about his involvement Sachin Tendulkar, UNICEF's South Asia Regional Ambassador said: “I am proud to be part of the Glasgow 2014 Opening Ceremony in support of UNICEF's global appeal for children. I've witnessed how UNICEF makes such a difference to children's lives, and I hope that everyone will tune in to the Opening Ceremony to be part of a Commonwealth-wide moment that has never been done before.”

UNICEF ambassador Priyanka Chopra unveiled “Gullak- Chhota sa yogdaan

Bachchpan Ke Naam”- a joint initiative of Amar Ujala and UNICEF for

encouraging voluntary funding for underprivileged children in India. In India,

Gullak refers to a piggy bank, which is used by kids to keep their savings. The

actress appealed to the readers and viewers to contribute to the Amar Ujala and

UNICEF Gullak initiative and thus raise funds to help the kids secure a better

future. As part of the initiative, a website named gullak.amarujala.com wherein the

donors can donate was also unveiled. The initiative garnered positive response

with many youngsters even donating their first salary towards the initiative.

UN's LGBT activism,Bollywood style

'The Welcome'- a Bollywood-style

musical was unveiled by the United

Nations Human Rights Office, in Mumbai

on April 30. Released as a part of its

global fight against homophobia, it was

accompanied by an appeal from

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to end

the prejudice that forces the LGBT

community to live in fear or shame. The

video release also marks the Free and

Equal campaign’s launch in India.

Bollywood actress Celina Jaitly sang for

the video and also starred in it. The actress

was last year nominated by the UN High

Commissioner for Human Rights as a UN

Equality Champion in recognition of her

support for LGBT rights.

Angelina Jolie, UK's Hague host'End Sexual Violence Summit'

Hollywood actress and UN ambassador Angelina Jolie along with William Hague, Foreign Secretary, UK launched a four-day summit in London on ending rape in war, calling for an end to the "culture of impunity" and more prosecutions. As she opened the conference, Jolie said she and Hague had discussed a woman they met in Bosnia, who was still too ashamed to tell

her son that she had been raped. "This day is for her," said Jolie. The actress also expressed concern over the spurt in crimes against women in India including the recent case in Badaun, UP where two girls were found hanging on a tree after allegedly being raped. Standing next to her, Hague underscored: "This will be the greatest concentration of effort, of discussion and decision ever seen in combating sexual violence in conflict."

when they unveiled the short film, 'Girl Uprising', at the

Tampa Amphitheatre in Tampa Bay on the sidelines of

the IIFA awards. “During the course of my visits as

UNICEF ambassador I come across girls who complain

that that they are discriminated against their brothers in

terms of education and even quality of food,” said

Priyanka. In the short film, Priyanka is seen narrating the segment which highlights story

of Rukhsana, the daughter of a daily wage labourer in Kolkata. Shabana Azmi who runs a

social welfare group named Mijwan that works for the uplift of women in UP said, "Only

by educating women can we empower them totally,”. Actors Meryl Streep, Anne

Hathaway and Freida Pinto have also given voice overs for other segments in the film

aided by the UN.

John Abraham launches 'Mission Tezaab’

Bollywood actor John Abraham revealed his softer side when he went

to meet acid attack victims in New Delhi on June 10. The actor

has joined a campaign called 'Mission Tezaab' which will help the

attack victims to rehabilitate. 'Mission Tezaab' is part of a large social

campaign called 'Voice of Change' organized in association with the

popular radio station,

Her Education (SHE)”, a one-year campaign promoted by

The Body Shop in association with Food for Life Vrindavan

(FFLV), which aims at educating 100 girls in need. The actor

is endorsing this philanthropic campaign. 'SHE' is an

endeavour to highlight girls’ education as one of the crucial

and sensitive issues of today. “Educating girls and young

women is not only one of the biggest moral challenges of our

country, it is also a necessary investment for a peaceful and

poverty-free world. I feel privileged to be associated with this

campaign and I’m thrilled to partner with an ethical and

socially conscious brand such as The Body Shop,” the actor
