1 GOAL

The company Fulterer GesmbH (A-6890 Lustenau) manufactures drawer slides that are installed in drawer cabinets made by the client and by others (Lista AG). The drawer slides are tested by Fulterer in its own laboratory according to DIN 68858 and RAL-RG 614/8 standards.

The goal of this order was to be on hand to inspect the testing equipment and test procedures in the testing of two types of slides (load capacity of 200 kg and 75 kg), and to check whether the tests conform to the standards mentioned. The tests to be performed were agreed upon between Lista AG and Fulterer GesmbH.

Remark: This report bases on the same tests reported in the Empa Test Report No. 450516, completed with documentation of additional tests.

2 TIMING AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

The tests took place from September 2008 through November 2008. The Empa project manager was pre-sent - in consultation with the client and with Fulterer GesmbH -on the afternoon of Sep. 22, 2008 (initial stage of the tests) and the morning of Sep. 26, 2008 (conclusion of the tests) on site in Lustenau.

The test specimens (tested slides) and the equipment and aids (such as sacks with which to load the draw-ers) belong to Fulterer GesmbH and were selected by the company. Empa project managers only brought along measurement devices that were used for the purposes of checking (scale, declinometer and gauge).

3 CHECK OF LOADS ON THE SLIDES

3.1 Weight Check of Load-Sacks

In DIN Standard 68858, Section 2 specifies the use of sacks filled with glass beads as a load on the draw-ers; each sack should weigh 1 kg. For impact testing, a single loosely filled sack that is approximately e-qual in size to the size of the drawer is prescribed.

In the tests carried out (Chap. 4), the drawers were loaded with sacks that had been filled with steel beads. The sacks had different nominal weights according to color:

• green: mg = 2.5kg

• red: mr = 5kg

• blue: mb = 10 kg

The effective mass of the sacks were checked on Sep. 26, 2008; 3 sacks were selected at random (Figure 1). It has been shown that all sacks that were checked are slightly heavier than their nominal weight (Table 1). This is a deviation in a conservative direction.

3.2 Drawer Weight Check

In loading the slides, the dead weight of the drawers was also included at 5 kg. The effective mass of the drawers used in the tests was measured on Sep. 26, 2008 (Figure 2). What was seen was that both drawers had a weight of

ms = 7.18 kg

Thus, the effective weight of the slides was greater than assumed due to the dead weight of the drawer. This is a deviation in a conservative direction.

4 INVESTIGATIONS

Below, the individual investigations are described, grouped according to type of investigation. The stan-dard requirements are not described in detail. They can be found directly from the standards mentioned.

4.1 Durability tests according to RAL-RG 614/8, Section 8-3.4.6

4.1.1 Test equipment

The tests were carried out at the computer-controlled testing facility of Fulterer GesmbH (Figure 3 and Figure 4). A check of the facility showed that it is suitable for correctly executing the “durability safety test” tests according to RAL-RG 614/8.

4.1.2 Test of slide FR7180.650-504 (nominal load 200 kg)

When the Empa project manager arrived on Sep. 22, 2008, the test was already under way. According to the screen display of the controlling computer, about 300 cycles were already completed. The test velocity setting for closing and opening was less than the value of 0.25 m/s determined in DIN Standard 68858 under Section 7.12. This value was corrected by Mr. Raid (Fulterer GesmbH) to match the standard speci-fication. Although the influence of the velocity deviation during the first 300 cycles had little to no nomi-nal effect on the test results, the controls of the test equipment were adjusted by Mr. Raid and the test was run for another 5000 cycles (full test scope according to RAL-RG 614/8, Section 8-3.4.6).

The Empa project manager was present at the start of the further 5000 cycles. The majority of the test pro-ceeded automatically, under the supervision of Mr. Raid. After the completion of the total of 5300 cycles (5000 cycles of which were run at the correct velocity), the slides were checked by Mr. Raid. The test log issued by Fulterer GesmbH can be found in Chap. 7.1. According to this log, the slides passed the test.

4.1.3 Test of slide FR7075.650-504B (nominal load 75 kg)

The test proceeded fully automatically under the supervision of employees of Fulterer GesmbH. The test log issued by Fulterer GesmbH can be found in Chap. 7.2. According to this log, the slides passed the test.

4.2 Test of the Deflection of the Front of the Drawer during the Durability

Test according to DIN 68858, Section 6.1.5

4.2.1 Test method

On Sep. 22, 2008, the drawer front deflection measurement procedure was demonstrated by Mr. Raid for the Empa project manager. The measurement was done using a Height gauge of Fulterer GesmbH (regis-tered from the Quality Assurance department of Fulterer GesmbH) in proper fashion (Figure 1).

Figure 5: Measurement of the height and drop of the front of the drawer using a height gauge (recorded after 300 cycles of the durability test on slide FR7180.650-504)

4.2.2 Test of slide FR7180.650-504 (nominal load 200 kg)

According to information from Mr. Corona (Fulterer GesmbH), all logged height measurements were done in the same fashion as the measurement demonstrated by Mr. Raid on Sep. 22, 2008 (Fig 5). The measured values can be found in Chap. 7.1.

According to this, the drop was 21.2 mm. This measured value is smaller than the allowable maximum value, which is defined in the standard as 4% of the slide path (0.04 x 630 mm = 25.2 mm). Thus, it can be determined that the slide met the requirements of the standard.

4.2.3 Test of slide FR7075.650-504B (nominal load 75 kg)

According to information from Mr. Corona, all logged height measurements were done in the same fashion as the measurement demonstrated by Mr. Raid on Sep. 22, 2008. (Figure 5). The measured values can be found in Chap. 7.2.

According to this, the drop was 15.0 mm. This measured value is smaller than the allowable maximum value, which is defined in the standard as 4% of the slide path (0.04 x 630 mm = 25.2 mm). Thus, it can be determined that the slide met the requirements of the standard.

4.3 Test of Opening Force according to DIN 68858, Section 6.1.5

4.3.1 Test method

On Sep. 22, 2008, the opening force measurement procedure was demonstrated by Mr. Raid for the Empa project manager. The measurement was done using a spring scale of Fulterer GesmbH (obtained from the Quality Assurance department under number QS 01167) in correct fashion (Figure 6).

Figure 6: Measurement of opening force for a loaded drawer (recorded on Sep. 22, 2008 after about 300 cycles of the durability test of slide FR7180.650-504)

The precision of the spring scale was checked by hanging a steel cylinder with a know weight from it (Fig-ure 7 and Figure 8). This check showed that the precision of the spring scale was sufficient.

4.3.2 Test of slide FR7180.650-504 (nominal load 200 kg)

According to information from Mr. Corona all slide force measurements were made in the same fashion as was demonstrated on Sep. 22, 2008. The corresponding measured values are listed in Chap. 7.1.

According to this, the maximum opening force was 90 ± 10 N. In the standard, the maximum allowable opening force is only indicated for a slide path of up to 500 mm and test load of 100 kg, indicated as 12.5% of the test load. For the existing slide path of 630 mm, according to DIN 68858 special agreements will have to be made. Conservatively, one can assume a limit of 0.125 x 100 kg x 9.81 m/s2 ≅ 125 N. This value is higher than the measured opening force. Consequently, the slide passed the test.

4.3.3 Test of slide FR7075.650-504B (nominal load 75 kg)

According to information from Mr. Corona all slide force measurements were made in the same fashion as was demonstrated on Sep. 22, 2008. The corresponding measured values are listed in Chap. 7.2.

According to this, the maximum opening force was 50 ± 10 N. In the standard, the maximum allowable opening force is only indicated for a slide path of up to 500 mm and test load of 100 kg, indicated as 12.5% of the test load. For the existing slide path of 630 mm, according to DIN 68858 special agreements will have to be made. Conservatively, one can assume a limit of 0.125 x 75 kg x 9.81 m/s2 ≅ 93 N. This value is higher than the measured opening force. Consequently, the slide passed the test.

The closing test was performed before and after the long term test (Chapter 4.1) on loaded drawer (200kg). The measured values are listed in Chap. 7.1. According to this, the maximum closing force amounted to:

• 220 N ± 10 N before the long term test (Figure 10/a)

• 240 N ± 10 N after the long term test (Figure 10/b)

In the standard, the maximum allowable closing force is only indicated for a slide path of up to 500 mm and test load of 100 kg, indicated as 12.5% of the test load. For the existing slide path of 630 mm, accord-ing to DIN 68858 special agreements will have to be made. One can assume a limit of 0.125 x 200 kg x 9.81 m/s2 ≅ 250 N. This value is higher than the measured closing forces. Consequently, the slide passed the test.

4.5 Vertical Load Test according to DIN 68858, Section 7.8

4.5.1 Test method

According to standard specifications, the forward edge of the fully loaded drawer must be subjected to a force of 200 N. In the tests, the load was produced using a weight of a steel cylinder (Figure 12). The mass of the steel cylinder was 21.26 kg (Figure 13). This put the effective load of the drawer at about 6% higher than the standard value (deviation in the conservative direction).

The length of the slide was set using a tape measure. The correct position of the steel weight on the edge of the drawer was marked with a felt marker. The load duration of 5 seconds each and the pause duration of 15 seconds each were controlled using the second hand of a wristwatch.

4.7.1 Test setup

The test setup is shown in Figure 16.

Figure 16: Photo during the impact test of slide FR7180.650-504 on Sep. 22, 2008 (drawer loaded with 9 sacks, each with a nominal mass of 5 kg, total load on slides: approx. 53 kg)

According to document RAL-RG 614/8, the inclination of the slides must be 10% for the stop tests. The effective tilt of the cabinet and the tilt of the installed slides was checked on Sep. 26, 2008 using a digital inclinometer (Figure 17). Accordingly, the tilt of the slides in the first two tests of slide “FR7180.650- 504” was:

na = TAN (5.7°) = 9.98%

The subsequent tests were done at an increased incline of:

nb = TAN (7.2°) = 12.6%

5 SUMMARY

The two inspections at Fulterer GesmbH left an extremely positive impression. The attending associates of the company, Mr. Raid and Mr. Corona carried out their work professionally.

The test equipment used met all essential points of the applicable standard requirements. Deviations were either minor (such as steel beads instead of glass beads as load) or were on the conservative side (such as the effective weight of the filled sacks being greater than their nominal weight).

The tests carried out in the presence of the Empa project manager proceeded in conformance with the stan-dard. The test logs issued by Fulterer GesmbH (Chap. 7) were only checked by the Empa project manager with regard to those points that were addressed while he was present (see Chap. 4). The push-out tests were carried out by the Fulterer GesmbH. Based on the obtained documentation of those tests no indication for any irregularity could be detected. In general, all the log entries were estimated to be absolutely reliable.

Based on the log entries, the results are summarised in Table 2.
