Welcome to our new look newsletter!Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year.

We hope you like our new look which is reflected in this newsletter and other materials such as the signage.

We received feedback about our old image and how it could be confused with other organisations and the NHS. We wanted to stress our unique status as a standalone local Charity. However we couldn’t do it alone so with the help and support of local businesses we are now able to be more distinct.

We will shortly launch our New website which will reflect the support we can offer, provide information and show ways you can help us and have fun at the same time.

Like many of the people we support 2011 will be a year of challenges for the

Charity but with your help we can turn these into Opportunities.

More than ever we need you so please help us in whatever way you can to make a real difference.

Thank you for your on-going support.

Honouring Our VolunteersIt is only with the help of our volunteers that we are able to support over 3,500 people a year. Roy Dennison, Fred Singleton and Maureen Sandiford were presented with certificates for their long service and dedication to the charity. All our volunteer drivers, administrators, complementary therapists, counsellors and fundraising volunteers give their time and skills to help others.

Maria’s StoryMy diagnosis of breast cancer

when I was 42 resulted in a course of chemotherapy and a mastectomy, followed by more chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the months afterwards.

As a mother of two children and a wife, I felt totally overwhelmed

by my situation, and didn’t really know where to turn. By chance, I came across the Cancer Information Centre at the BRI, which is jointly run by the hospital and Cancer Support. There, I realised that there was a whole range of services, some practical, some personal, to help me with my situation.

I was able to get advice – I didn’t even realise I might be entitled to any help with access to benefits, but an adviser guided me through the process. I liked the fact that this help was available over the phone – I didn’t always want to smothered by people helping out.

I also benefited from some lovely complementary therapy sessions, which were lovely and girly, and made me feel myself again, just for a while. Talking to the therapist about my feelings, fears and inner pain was so helpful. There are things you just can’t talk about with your family and friends.

I felt so isolated initially, and I really don’t know how I could have coped without Cancer Support Bradford and Airedale. Now I really do feel that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and with their support I am now getting on with my life.

Maria

Splash of colourfor Art RoomPottery tutor Gillian and her class decided to brighten up the art room and after much discussion it was decided to create a mosaic. The design was based on Gustav Klimt’s Tree of Life as the branches could be adapted to hold the mosaic inserts. Old tiles and crockery were collected and individuals made their own tiles which were decorated to add texture. Some people added names or initials of loved ones to make a lasting reminder. Service users, staff and volunteers were delighted with the finished piece.

Our pottery and watercolour classes are just two of the services available free of charge to cancer patients, their families and carers. The groups are welcoming and friendly, no experience is necessary and they offer the opportunity to learn new skills, meet people in a similar situation and can be a diversion from the stress of a cancer diagnosis. Call 01274 77 66 88 for more information.

New Initiative Success!A new initiative was introduced in June last year in addition to the services provided

by our Wellbeing team. Women undergoing chemotherapy as part of their cancer treatment are offered a luxury one-off make-over. The ladies can choose a manicure, pedicure or chemo make-up session provided at the Centre by a qualified and experienced Beauty Therapist.

Over 30 women have already benefited from this initiative which is currently funded

by Bosom Friends, a charity who support women with Breast Cancer.

Record Breaking News! Our Welfare Rights team have year-on-year increased the amount of money gained on behalf of their clients in benefits and grants. At the end of the 2009/10 financial year the team broke all records when £3.6million was raised for their clients.

The team are here to help with the financial and practical issues faced by cancer patients, their carers and families. Visits can be made at home, at a hospice, hospital or at the Centre and 2047 people were seen in the 2009/10 period.

The adviser made the process very easy – it would have been a nightmare completing benefit forms without help

The help enabled us to enjoy short weekend breaks at the coast, which did us the world of good

If you would like to contact the Welfare Rights Team please telephone: 01274 777711

Information Service DevelopsThe Information and Access Team now have two sites where patients and carers can get information and advice and someone to talk to. The Cancer Information Centre is in the main entrance to Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) and there is now a dedicated Information Room in the Cancer Support Centre.

Access work is an important part of what we do. It involves making sure our information and services are accessible to people with particular needs that can sometimes be overlooked.

Our access work also involves us working with wider initiatives. Last year we promoted Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Week and more recently working with the District Care Trust and Community Pharmacy Teams on Public Health Campaigns.

The Information Centre at BRI is open Monday to Friday, 10 – 4 and you can telephone direct on 01274 364307.

Calling ALL Bradford & Airedale Businesses!! We are very grateful to our generous corporate, business, community and individual supporters. Your help does make a difference and is very much appreciated.

New Partnerships!

Local businesses and companies have helped to make a real difference to the lives of people affected by cancer, living in our area. They did this by choosing Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale as charity of the year. A partnership with the charity not only supports our work it can help companies to raise brand profiles, motivate staff, boost morale and demonstrate charitable commitment to customers.

There are many ways we can work together and we would love to hear from you. It’s not just about the money it may be that your company can offer the skills of its staff as volunteers. This can be immensely rewarding knowing what a positive difference this can make to their local community.

Here are some ways your business can help:• Charity of the Year • Payroll Giving• Sponsorships• Gifts in Kind• Mentoring• Volunteering

We would like to invite you to come along to the Centre to see, first hand, the work we are doing, and to see what a difference we make.
