The Science WithinTeslin® substrate, from PPG Industries, is a
microporous, dimensionally stable, highly
filled, single-layer, polyolefin synthetic
material. A non-abrasive inorganic filler
comprises 60 percent of the weight, and it
is 65 percent air by volume. The porous,
uncoated nature of Teslin substrate allows
inks, adhesives, coatings, and laminating
films to penetrate into its structure, forming
strong interlocking bonds with the substrate.
Easy, High-Quality PrintabilityBefore the introduction of Teslin substrate, it was difficult to perform high-quality printing on a synthetic
sheet. The porous nature makes Teslin substrate highly absorptive, enabling inks to set almost
instantly, resulting in rich, vibrant color and crisp, clear print definition. Compatible with most printing
technologies, Teslin substrate doesn’t require special inks or drying equipment. It can be duplex and
dual-surface printed with high quality graphics, digital photos, bar codes and micro text; it doesn’t
crack upon folding; and doesn’t require an edge seal when laminated. Also, an inherent thermal
stability enables superior personalization throughput and versatility.
Unique Material ScienceTeslin substrate’s proprietary composition and structure makes it a peerless material with a unique
combination of capabilities. Due to the porous structure, Teslin substrate exhibits a lower dielectric
constant than other substrate materials, feels soft to the touch, and offers a valuable cushioning
quality for embedded electronic applications. Teslin substrate remains flexible at temperatures down
to -70° C. It bonds under heat and pressure without adhesives to a wide variety of polymers and
resins, and is suitable for both platen and high-throughput roll lamination. Teslin substrate is more
static-dissipative than other synthetics and emits minimal particulates upon flexing, enabling various
clean room and electronics applications.
Differentiating Teslin substrate from other syntheticmaterials—and the key to many performance benefits—is a unique microporous structure that makes the substrate lightweight but strong and enables it to absorband breathe while providing insulation and cushioning.

Built-in SecurityInherently tamper-resistant and tamper-evident, Teslin substrate forms adhesive bonds as much as
10 times stronger than those of other substrates—requiring no edge seals to produce durable, secure
products. In response to a need for advanced methods of authentication, PPG engineered a security-
grade product that embeds optional covert and forensic security features within the Teslin substrate
during production, providing the opportunity for security system simplification and reduced costs.
Rugged DurabilityTeslin substrate withstands harsh environments and punishing applications, remains pliable in extremely
cold temperatures and survives heat of up to 200° C. Teslin substrate is waterproof, resists abrasion and
tearing, and stands up to a wide range of chemicals. It can be steam-pressed and dry cleaned.

Laminated cards and key tags must withstand

can be printed using nearly any combination
of fixed and variable printing. The processing

Used worldwide for over 10 years in billions of
security cards and credentials, Teslin substrate’s
inherent tamper-resistant, tamper-evident
characteristic offers a key first line of defense in
these applications. This characteristic couples
effectively with security printing technologies
such as microprint, split fountain or intaglio in
keeping critical documents safe. For maximum
security applications, customized covert and
forensic elements can be incorporated within
Teslin substrate during the production process.
Standard Card Construction
By incorporating easy-to-print Teslin® substrateinto polycarbonate (PC) composite security cards,lamination bond strength and the ability to laserengrave are retained, while card flex life isextended (six to ten times greater than all-PCcards) and overall card construction costs arereduced significantly.
