Saguache County
Saguache County, Colorado, was
created December 29, 1866. It was
created from areas taken from
Lake and Costilla Counties. The
name is from the Ute Language
meaning “blue earth”. The county
seat is the town of Saguache. Cen-
ter is the largest town in the coun-
ty. The population today is around
6,300, which is slightly higher than
the previous high for population in
the 1930’s. Other towns in the county
include Crestone, Moffat and Villa
Grove. General Don Diego de Var-
gas came through Saguache County in 1680 after the Pueblo Revolt. Don Juan Bautista de
Anza visited the area in 1779 during his campaign against Cuerno Verde. More settlers came
to the area after the treaty with Mexico ending the Mexican-American war. Otto Mears arrived
in 1865 to begin farming to provide for the mining communities in the nearby mountains. He
would be instrumental in the development of the county along with Nathan Russell, John Law-
rence and Enos Hotchkiss. He developed several toll roads. One of the toll roads was Mar-
shall Pass, that he sold to the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. Marshall Pass would be the
first crossing of the Continental Divide in Colorado by a railroad.

Dr. Susan Anderson
Dr. Susan Anderson
Susan Anderson (January 31,
1870 – April 16, 1960) was
born in Indiana. She moved to
Kansas as a child with her fam-
ily. Anderson’s parents di-
vorced and she moved to Crip-
ple Creek, Colorado, with her
father, brother and grandmoth-
er. Very unusual for her times,
Dr. Anderson’s father encour-
aged her to attend medical
school. She graduated from the
University of Michigan Medical
School in 1897. She briefly re-
turned to Cripple Creek before
moving on Denver, Greeley and
Eaton. She worked as the coro-
ner for Grand County during the
building of the Moffat Tunnel and investigat-
ed many of the deaths that occurred in dur-
ing the construction of the tunnel. After con-
tracting tuberculosis in 1907, Dr. Anderson
moved to Fraser, Colorado. She would be
the only physician in Fraser for the next 49
years. She was affectionately called Doc
Susie by the residents of Fraser. Anderson
died at the age of 90 and is buried in the
Cripple Creek Cemetery. She was inducted
into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in
1997. To read more about this remarkable
