SAC Elections
By Olaedo Anyanwu
SAC is a very big honor to be elected
in to. Two students are elected in
the seventh grade and serve in the
eighth grade through twelve grade.
The students basically represent the
school by going to monthly central
office meetings and three meetings
with the school board. They address
concerns about the school in order
for a change to be made. The stu-
dents get recommended to be nom-
inees by teachers, and then the stu-
dents in their grade get to vote on
who they think will be the best fit.
There were six names on the ballot
for this year, and the students who
won were Brooklyn Arven and Olae-
do Anyanwu. They both went to
Bonsack Elementary, and thy are in
choir and on cheer squad for
WBMS.
News in the World- Notre Dame
By Ellie Panko
Notre Dame was an icon of Paris
and an international destination for nearly
850 years. Many Parisians say that Notre
Dame is a part of their culture. When the
fire alarm sounded at 6:20 pm, many Paris-
ians said a part of them burned too. The
fire was said to start in the roof of the
building where renovations were taking
place, but the exact cause has not been
identified.in the fire much of the roof was
destroyed along with some artifacts and
the spire, which collapsed.
The President Emmanuel Macron says he
want to rebuild the Gothic Church in 5
years. People around the world have al-
ready started donating to help the process.
Though the fire is a tragic disaster, it also
presents a new rebirth for the structure.

Ms. Tardy is the library/instructional assistant.
This is the first year that she has worked in the library
but she has been working at the school as an instruc-
tional assistant in classrooms for 8 years. She loves to
help the kids and enjoys finding new books to read. She
enjoys fantasy and historical fiction the most but likes
the others as well. Her favorite authors are J.K. Rowling
and Kevin Sands. Her main job is to help with mainte-
nance and placement of books and assisting Ms. Balsley.
She is an amazing teacher and a great contribution to
this school. Be sure to stop by the library some time,
check out a book, and say thank you to Ms. Tardy and
Ms. Balsley.

Gym Field Trips
By: Cindel Camper
During the weeks of April 1-12, all of the gym classes went on multiple exciting field trips! To be a part
of this fun experience all you had to do was pay twelve dollars. For those students who couldn’t pay the fee, the
school paid for them. The field trips were during the P.E. block. Two of the field trips were at the bowling alley
and two of them were at Lancerlot.
One of the field trips was going ice skating at Lancerlot. At the ice skating rink, students got their skates
and got on the rink. Lancerlot’s ice rink is a standard size hockey rink. Another one of the field trips was going
swimming at Lancerlot. The boys and girls were split up for swimming and ice skating. The day that the girls
went swimming, the boys went ice skating and vice versa. The last two trips were to the bowling alley where
students could bowl a game and purchase snacks at the snack bar. Overall the gym field trips were awesome
and we should do them again next year.
April’s Fools Day
Emily Sowers
April’s Fools Day, the one day of the year when you can play practical jokes and
pranks on your friends without being blamed. The day when you can jump out in front of your sister or brother
and yell “BOO!” without getting in trouble with your mom. What is the origin of April’s Fools Day, though?
When did it start and why? Well the origins to this funny day are actually quite a mystery to most people, but
historian’s think that April’s Fools Day dates back to 1582. They think it happened when France switched from
the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called by the Council of Trent in 1563, although not everyone
noticed the calendar switch. These poor, unlucky people who did not notice that the new beginning of the year
was on January 1st and continued to celebrate it on April 1st became the targets of the jokes and hoaxes. These
pranks included having a paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish),
said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person.
There’s also thoughts that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox/first day of spring in the
Northern Hemisphere. This is when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather. News-
papers, radio, TV stations, and Websites have participated in this holiday by reporting outrageous fictional
claims that have fooled their audiences. This holiday has been going on for a very long time and is going to con-
tinue for generations to come.

Spring Awards Concert
By: Olaedo Anyanwu
On May 2, 2019 the William Byrd sixth and seventh grade choir members had their
last concert for the 2018-2019 school year. It was definitely an amazing concert with
songs by Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, and some came from The Greatest Showman. The
concert had four soloist who were Connor Wheeler, Cindel Camper, Makenna Jacob-
sen, and Olaedo Anyanwu. Both choir did an amazing job and will have another con-
cert in the fall.
This concert was different than one that the choir has done before because it was
also an awards concert. The awards given out were MVP, Section, Spirt of Choir, and
one award for the student who participated in All-State Choir. The award for All Dis-
trict will be given to the students at another time. This concert all recognized how
diverse the choir can be with students in all sort of clubs
and sports including the Newspaper Club!
All Virginia Chorus
By Olaedo Anyanwu
On April 4-6, 2019, I was one of two students from Wil-
liam Byrd had a chance to represent the school at an All- State Chorus.
Once I arrived to Richmond I had to check in I got a nametag and a pencil. That first
day we practice our six songs briefly, and then we were released. The second day we
had practice at around 8:00am. After we came back for lunch and our other practice
we had to go to Carpenter Theater. We had to sing for the other middle school choir
and both of the high school choirs. We sang two of our songs that day, and they end-
ed up being sang very well. The next day was our concert day and we had to sing at
Richmond Baptist Church. The order of the songs made the concert very touching to
many people was also interactive at the end of it.
I had so much fun at All-State, and I got to meet many new people. I definitely hope
that I get to enjoy this experience next year as well.

Sports Baseball
By: Cindel Camper
The baseball season is over here at WBMS. The team played really well this year. They
played twelve games total this year. They won nine games and lost three. They lost against Reed
Mountain, Franklin County, and Stanton River. Their last game was on April 29. Sadly, the game
at Hidden Valley was canceled due to rain. If they had played them, I’m sure that they would
have won.
The WBMS baseball team has three coaches, Brian Jones, Kevin Witcher, and Justin
Dent. There were twenty-one people on the team this year. Left fielder and second baseman,
Brenin Witcher said “Being on the baseball team is a fun experience and there are a lot of good
athletes on the team”. He also said that they have done better than last year because last year
they had six losses. So come on down to one of the baseball games and cheer on the WBMS
baseball team!
Softball
By: Emily Sowers
This year’s softball season was a knockout. After
playing a total of twelve games, winning seven, losing five,
this year’s softball season came to an end. After practicing
every Monday through Friday, from 3:30 to 5:30, these girls
had an outstanding season. This team had two amazing
coaches, Coach Allison Thornton and Coach Jordan Persing-
er. They started each practice with running and warm-ups:
including throwing and stretching. Then they went to do
infield and outfield split drills, continuing after to do batting
and T-drills. In a game, each girl had two to three positions.
On this spectacular team there are fifteen players
and two managers. Both of these managers are in sixth
grade. The interviewee for the article, Sydney Blewett, said
this season had two amazing pitchers and everyone was able
to play in more than one position. This team had an amazing
season and more to come in the future.

Eighth Grade D.C. Field Trip
By Ellie Panko
On May 10, 2019, the eighth graders took a trip to Washington DC. While we were
there, we had the chance to see many sights. First, the bus took us on a drive through
the capital where we got to see major landmarks. When we got there, we split into
groups. In groups, we got the chance to visit the Smithsonian museums, go on tours,
and spend time in our Capital. One group even got to meet our District 6 Representative
Ben Cline. Afterwards, we all took a dinner cruise of Washington DC, which was full of
good food and dancing. After the dinner cruise, the bus took us to see the Washington
Monument, The World War 11 Memorial, The Lincoln Memorial, and The Korean War
Memorial. We went to the hotel, got a good nights sleep, and ate a good breakfast the
next day. We came home on a rain filled 3 hour drive.
I think it is good that the 8th graders got to see the capital. After learning all year about
it in Civics, it’s cool to see that we have a say in our government. Our government one
run by the people and going there allowed us to see the impact we can have on the
world around us.

House by the Railroad
By: Cindel Camper
Oh, house by the railroad
How your wonderful home
Shines in the morning sun
How your white paint glows brightly
All throughout the dark night
Oh, house by the railroad
How your big glass windows
Let in the sunlight of day
How your brick chimney
Stands out from the rest of you
In such a beautiful way
Oh, house by the railroad
Such a sad, lonely sight
Standing all alone by itself
No longer inhabited
By day or by night
Oh, house by the railroad
How I’ll miss you so
Oh, house by the railroad
Please don’t go
Apologies By: Latriva Peirce
I’ve let something slip away.
It’s still left uncompleted today. The only thing I can now do
Is apologize to you.
I wanted to take part, And it slightly broke my heart
When after I had worked so hard, I had to play my final card.
I stopped coming with no explanation. It stayed like this for a long duration.
Things had just become too much to handle, And I was left with a burnt out candle.
That didn’t justify what I did,
How I just closed the lid. I should have come to you,
And explained why I needed to .
So I end this with simple words, Nothing to absurd.
It may not be the wanted newspaper story, But I truly am sorry.

Blue
By Jason Cox
Blue is a beautiful blueberry
When eaten it can make one merry
Blue is a saddened heart
Showing what happens when a love breaks apart
Blue is a wonderful car
That helps you go to places far
Blue is a fluttering butterfly
Fluttering and beating its wings through the sky
Blue is the color of hopelessness
Weighing down your heart when your life is a
mess
Blue is the sky in the middle of day
Letting the sun go out and play
Blue is the color of the ocean
Drowning sailors and innocents with no commotion
Impossible to fight and always in motion
Blue is the face of a drowning soul
The Boating Party
By: Hunter Burgess
She sat with her child perfect and pretty
Not knowing the war awaiting her future city
War was a mischievous and terrible thing
A horrible sight she didn’t want her child to fright
The man the woman and daughter loved
Fought for that city like a warrior dove
Soft and self-spoken was he
A man who’s family mourned his death in glee.
Lavender
By Milla Farrington
1Lavender is the first one of the night,
It greets you as you sleep alright.
2Lavender grows in blooming meadows,
Dancing among its friendly fellows.
3Lavender is a true friend in the end,
Wishes of luck is what it send.
4Lavender is singing a happy tune,
Lavender will begin to sprout soon.
5Lavender is merciless to all that may,
Although that is what I would say.
6Lavender is so very clever,
Midnight, speaking to the weather.
7Lavender sings a melody so greatly,
Not many could decipher so easily.
8Lavender is peaceful and queer,
It really was a great year.
Kayli Thompson
This is the journey that I have to take
To get away from all my mistakes
I need to go outside and by myself
Somewhere quiet where I can think
Listen to the waves crashing onto the water, look up at the
beautiful blue sky
Feel the water moving the boat far, far away,
Away from all I know
I need to be alone
So I don’t have to think all I have to do is forget
Forget everything and regret nothing

Limerick –
By Elliot Gaines
There was an old man who knew
That his dog was looking quite blue
So he gave him a toy
That he would enjoy
But the dog still had nothing to do
Limerick
By: Reid Hanson
There once was a man stuck in a stall,
He tried to get out but would fall,
One day a man flushed,
The fat man just blushed,
And quickly ran out of the mall.
Limerick
By: Nathan Burd
There once was a man named Dave
But sadly, he ended up in a grave
He died with humor
He also died with a tumor
But his Minecraft didn’t save.

The Rowboat
By: Maddie Yakob
A lone sailor rows
through
The mist of the ocean spray
Beneath him lies death in the blue
Above lies reality gone astray
He rows and rows and rows
But the clouds come chasing
They cause his lowest lows
And his heart to start racing
He rows and rows and rows
But the water seems to call him
So he dares to dip in his toes
And jump in for eternal swim
With a splash he sinks beneath
And he is amazed by the sea
It reflects like a sword in its sheath
In this beautiful sea of free
But the sea has more to it
And it isn’t as pleasing as it seems
So the sailor decides to quit
And surface to follow his dreams
The rowboat is still floating above
The man has found his place
Overhead, not clouds, but a dove
While he starts to row apace
A lone sailor rows through
The mist of the ocean spray
Beneath him lies death in the blue
Above lies reality gone astray
House by the Railroad
By: Emily Sowers
I hear the sounds of trains all day
I hear them click-clacking on the tracks
And all I want to do is sleep
But that is exactly what I lack
So I try many ways
To block those loud whistles out
But to no avail I’ve tried so hard
Yet I’m afraid I have lost this bout
Though I do think one good thing came out of this
The trains are my personal alarm clocks it seems
When I finally fall into a fitful sleep
They wake me up at the right time from my
dreams
