The installation of these "special systems for use under extreme conditions (-5 °C)" was workedout jointly with the Institut für Fenstertechnik (i.f.t.) in Rosenheim (German Institute for WindowTechnology) and successfully tested in practical use. For our WINTeQ systems, the suitability foruse under extreme conditions has been confirmed by Independent Experts' Reports. On site, the systems can even be applied at temperatures down to -10 °C. In this way, stillstands at theconstruction site can be substantially reduced.

Quality facade and window installation.

The basics of sealingAs a result of the stricter requirements of the EnEV, connection joints and their proper sealinghave become increasingly important over the past few years. They separate the individualbuilding components either from each other or from the building structure. The joints must beexpertly sealed, while taking the structural-physical necessities into account, and must complywith the requirements laid down in the "RAL Guideline on the planning and installation ofwindows and front doors in new builds and refurbishment projects".

Due to the high importance of this critical zone, its proper sealing must be planned well in ad-vance. The materials to be used for the different tasks and functions must be adapted to eachother under building physical aspects. It is recommendable to install a vapor diffusion tightmembrane on the inside of the building in order to prevent the penetration of moisturethrough the joint and thus into the insulation material. Especially low-energy or zero-energyhouses require the installation of window systems that meet the highest demands with respectto thermal and acoustic insulation. In addition, they also need to satisfy the ever-increasingrequirements concerning protection against burglary. Due to their more effective thermalinsulation, modern window elements are able to generate high energy savings. But also theconnection joints must be able to fulfill today's thermal and acoustic insulation requirements.

These days, the products used for sealing connection joints not only have to fulfill purelyfunctional requirements. Apart from being able to effectively seal the building envelope, theyincreasingly need to meet the demands of sustainable construction.

The largest single locationof energy loss from thebuilding is via windows anddoors. By replacing oldwindows and doors and expertly sealing the connections between thebuilding elements, a majorpart of the energy loss can be prevented in thelong term. 36 %

TEROSON. No room for compromise.

Why is the topic of window sealing so crucial?The requirements resulting from legal regulations are making increasingly high demands on theproper and workmanlike sealing of the connection joints between windows, window elements,front doors etc. and the building itself. Making the building shell resistant to air, wind and driving rain and preventing the formation of mold are structural necessities stipulated by the regulations of the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV 2016) and DIN 4108. According to thelaws of building physics, water vapor tries to move through walls and ceilings in order to be atthe same concentration on both sides – moving as a rule from the in- to the outside. It alwaystakes the path of least resistance. And that's the connection joint.

In times where the low-energy and the passive house are state of the art, the proper sealing of junctions is of particular significance. Structural damage caused by the formation of condensation water in the area of connection joints – between the building structure and windows, window elements or front doors – has strongly increased in the past few years.

The guideline for mounting windows and doors, issued by the RAL Quality Assurance Association in 2014, provides comprehensive information on the state of the art. One of its most important constituents is the 3-level principle of window sealing.

3rd level: On the outside, the joint must be protectedfrom driving rain, wind and UV light. Water that penetratedfrom outside must be controlled and directly drained to theoutside. At the same time, moisture must be allowed to escape from the functional area to the outside.

2nd level: The centerpart of the joint is thearea of thermal andacoustic insulation.

1st level: The inner area of the joint must be airtight towardsthe living space, thus separating the indoor from the outdoor climate. In this area, the temperature must always be above thecritical temperature for mold growth (13-degree isotherm).

Types of sealing

In metal, glass and facade construction, the use of profiled, self-adhesive sealing tapes and sealing beads supplied as rolls or onspools provides extra safety.

They are simply installed manually without need for additional equipment –either before or during assembly. We differ between the following types ofsealing: overlapping, self-adhesive and pressure seals (with mechanical fastening).

Overlapping seals are used e.g. for fixed glazing. Due to the powerful bondbetween glass pane and window frame, this type of sealing adds strength forbearing dynamic loads. Any stresses arising within the joints, e.g. caused bydifferent thermal changes in length, are reduced. Overlapping seals are alsoused to exclude unfavorable environmental effects in joints. Such types of covering seal also achieve an optically flawless surface in joints.

Self-adhesive elastic seals help simplify the structural design, making assembly easier and, in some cases, conventional mechanical fastening redundant. Such types of constructions are also used when contact interaction between materials or components is suspected of causing corrosion.

In addition, the use of such seals can absorb sound transmitted throughstructural components. In effect, the elastic adhesive reduces or preventstransmission of vibration. Another advantage is that mechanically fastenedcomponents can at the same time be sealed.

The basics of sound insulation and noise control

The sound reduction index (SRI) of sound-insulating windows is measured in decibels. As a rule of thumb, it is saidthat when reducing the noise by just ten decibels, this is perceived by human ears as cutting the noise by half. The soundproofing properties of windows mainly depend on the following factors:

■ Structure and thickness of the glazing• A larger distance between the individual panes increases the soundproofing effect of sound insulation windows.• If insulating glass consists of panes of different thickness, this may also increase the noise protection. • In the case of insulating glass, the gas filling the space between the panes does not influence the level of

sound insulation.■ Acoustic quality of window frames and casements (cross-section and structure of window elements):

important is the overall structure consisting of glass, gaskets and frame■ Very tight joints between casement and frame and between frame and masonry

For this reason, the soundproofing of connection joints has become increasingly important over the last years. The latest generation of window elements has been considerably improved with respect to its sound-insulatingproperties, e.g. by using multi-chamber systems, foam-filled or insulated profiles. Modern windows are equippedwith special sound insulation glass that is available as two- or three-pane glazing.VDI standard 2719 differs between six sound insulation classes for windows:

Structure-borne sound (caused e.g. by drilling noise, operating noise or rain drumming on a windowsill) travels atdifferent speeds depending on the medium or type of material it travels through (e.g. concrete, steel or masonry).

Airborne sound travels through the air in the form of spherical waves at a speed of 331 m/s. With increasingdistance from the sound source, the intensity will decrease. In everyday language, airborne sound is mostlyreferred to as "noise", for example as in street noise, aircraft noise or construction site noise.

TEROSON PT ecoMAX tapes are open to vapor diffusion. In terms of weatherproofing, they are resistant to driving rain. When choosingthis type of sealing, attention must always be paid to predefined joint tolerances. Pre-compressed, acrylate-impregnated PUR sealing ta-pes expand shortly after their installation in the window joint and rapidly close the joint between the window and the building shell. Thetapes can accommodate slightly uneven substrates within the predefined joint tolerance range.We offer compressed cellular foam tapes in two different qualities, depending on the intended use and building height. Buildings of upto 20 m height are sealed with TEROSON PT ecoMAX 300. For buildings of this height, sealing up to 300 Pa against driving rain is suffi-cient. TEROSON PT ecoMAX 600 has been developed for buildings above 20 m height (up to 100 m). Tapes providing 600 Pa resistanceto driving rain are more than a match for the weather conditions at such heights.

The multi-functional joint sealing tape TEROSON PT 1000 is excellently suited for providing reliable sealing of window and door connections on three levels. Due to its extremely low joint permeability (a-value of zero), TEROSON PT 1000 ensures airtight sealing of theindoor area, thus achieving a significant reduction in the loss of convective heat. At the same time, the sealing tape features an optimal vapor diffusion gradient from the inside to the outside (sd-value gradient of 50:1), thus ensuring reliable removal of moisture. Any moisture entrapped in the building during construction is allowed to escape. This helps avoid later structural damage caused by the formation of condensation water in the area of connection joints. Reliable heat and sound insulation are ensured on the middle sealinglevel. TEROSON PT 1000 features a very high resistance to driving rain of more than 1,000 Pa (a tightness of 900 Pa corresponds to a wind force of 140 km/h, i.e. 12 on the Beaufort scale).
