Building a systemfrom Terminator I/O componentsMount just the I/O modules youneed to your DIN-rail (or you canpanel mount them). You are notlimited by a fixed base size. Andyou can choose any suitable PC,PLC or other fieldbus network master. You’re notlimited there either!

New for 2000!Terminator I/O Combines:Discrete and Analog I/O, andTerminal Blocks with yourchoice of network interfaceAchieve maximum system flexi-bility with our DIN-rail mount-able Terminator I/O. Shortenwiring runs by locating I/O nearfield devices. Add modules in thefuture without buying new bases. Our removable I/O modulesconnect internally to three-tierspring clamp or screw-type termi-nal blocks.

You’ll save the cost of separateterminal blocks (and save thelabor required to wire from tradi-tional PLC I/O to separate termi-nal blocks). Do you need fusedoutputs? We offer those, too!Maybe the best feature of ourTerminator I/O is our connectiv-ity. We offer a choice of six plug-compatible network interfacemodules, Each system needs at least oneAC or DC power supply, but youcan add more power if you needit, And, we offer twenty-one dis-crete and analog I/O modules.

Up to 16 modules

It is important to understand theinstallation requirements for yourTerminator I/O system. This willhelp ensure that the TerminatorI/O products work within theirenvironmental and electricallimits.

Plan for safetyThis catalog should never be usedas a replacement for the technicaldata sheet that comes with theproduct (and is also availableonline at www.automation-direct.com). The technical datasheet contains information thatmust be followed. The systeminstallation should comply withall appropriate electrical codesand standards.

Unit dimensions and mounting orientationUse the following diagrams tomake sure the Terminator I/Osystem can be installed in yourapplication. Terminator I/O unitscan be mounted horizontally orvertically, but should not bemounted upside down to ensureproper airflow for cooling pur-poses. It is important to checkthese dimensions against theconditions required for yourapplication. For example, it is rec-ommended to leave 2” depth forease of access and cable clear-ance; however, your distance maybe greater or less. Also, check theinstallation guidelines for the rec-ommended cabinet clearances.

Grip the locking handle,as shown, and pullgently to eject the I/Omodule from its base. The module will slideout for easy replace-ment. This proceduredoes not apply to networkinterface modules or powersupplies which have integralbases.

Hot swappable I/O modules You can remove I/Omodules under power, but exercise cautionwhile doing so. Do nottouch the terminals

with your hands or anyconductive material.

Always remove power if it isequally convenient to do so.

I/O modules feature separateterminal basesTo install I/O modules:• Slide the module into its ter-

minal base (until it clicks intoposition)

• Hook upper DIN-rail tabsover the top of DIN-rail, andpress the assembly firmlyonto the DIN-rail.

• Slide the module along theDIN-rail until it engages withthe adjacent module.

Removing I/Omodules is a snap!

Power Supply Options and Configuration

Calculating the power budgetTo calculate the power budget, read the available power from thepower supply specification tableand subtract the power con-sumed by each module to theright of the power supply. Do notinclude modules to the right of anadditional power supply.

Adding more power Each power supplyfurnishes poweronly to thenetwork interfaceand I/O modulesto its right.Inserting a secondpower supply closes the powerloop for the power supply tothe left and powers themodules to its right. Perform apower budget calculation foreach power supply in thesystem.

Field device powerand wiring optionsTerminator I/O terminal bases areavailable in screw clamp and springclamp versions for both half-sizeand full-size modules. Hot stampsilkscreen labeling is used for num-bering I/O points, commons, andall power terminals.

Field device wiring optionsPower your DC input devicesfrom the integrated 24VDC powersupply bus. T1K-08ND3 andT1K-16ND3 DC input modulesinclude jumpers for selecting theinternal 24VDC power supplyavailable for 2- and 3-wire fielddevices. Clearly labeled triplestack terminals make it easy towire 2- and 3-wire devices ensur-ing clean wiring with only onewire per termination.

External user supplied 24VDCpower, or auxiliary 24VDC termi-nals from T1K-01AC, can be easilyapplied directly to one end of theterminal rows and jumperedacross each base in the system.

This is a convenient solution forpowering analog I/O and discreteDC output devices whosemodules do not have directaccess to the internal bussed24VDC. If current consumptionincreases, simply add additionalT1K-01AC power supplies intothe system.

I/O module addressingTerminator I/O module address-ing will be different depending onwhich network interface protocolis used. For example, DeviceNet

and Profibus support “word” datatypes for mapping analogmodules. For Koyo remote I/Oonly discrete (“X” inputs, “Y”outputs) data types are sup-ported, and mapping analogmodules is accomplished inblocks of 32 I/O points per

channel. Each of the proceedingI/O module specification pagesinclude an entry for number ofI/O points (bits) per module.

Profibus DP slaveProfibus allows 32 stations persegment. Segments vary in lengthdepending on the desired trans-mission speed. The maximumspeed is achieved on a segment100 meters (327 feet) in length. Our Profibus DP Slave representsa single station. Repeaters alsocount as stations and are used toextend the network to greater dis-tances. Our Profibus module sup-ports baud rates of 9.6Kbaud to12Mbaud depending on thenetwork length.

T1H-PBC slaveIf you are using a Profibus con-troller network, the TerminatorI/O sub-system will help furtherreduce the cost of your overallapplication. The T1H-PBCmodule allows the micro-modularTerminator I/O sub-system to belinked with a Profibus mastercontroller. Profibus is a controlbus which provides a commonmethod to connect automationequipment with devices on asingle network. This standardcommunications media isreferred to as Profibus and signif-icantly reduces hardwiring costs.Profibus provides specificationsfor information exchangedbetween nodes, such as controllerdata associated with low leveldevice and configuration parame-ters individually related to systemoperations.

Here’s how it works! The T1H-PBC module is aProfibus slave, which can beplugged into the CPU slot of theTerminator I/O micro-modularfamily of I/O bases. This modulereports all the identification data, diagnostic information, and para-meters which control the moduleoperation. The T1H-PBC modulescans and reports all discrete andanalog I/O data to a ProfibusMaster. The AC externally-powered Terminator I/O baseunits contain a 24 VDC powersupply for simple wiring ofsensors and actuators into theTerminator I/O modules, and forcontrolling them with a ProfibusMaster. Using our Profibus I/Osub-system will increase installa-tion flexibility as well as save onwiring costs. The T1H-PBCmodule supports all Terminatordiscrete and analog I/O modules.

DirectLogic remote I/O slaveA Terminator I/O system canconnect to DirectLogic PLCsusing either of our proprietarynetworking protocols. Most of theDL205, DL305, and DL405 PLCscan serve as a Remote I/OMaster1 by adding a communica-tion master module. The RemoteI/O protocols are also embeddedin the D2-250, D3-350, and D4-450 CPUs. On these CPUs, a net-working connection is availablevia one of the built-in communi-cation ports so you don’t have toadd a communication module.

Remote slave / slice slaveThe Terminator I/O T1K-RSSSnetwork interface module servesas slave to any of the DirectLogicPLCs that can act as RemoteMaster (using the RM-NET proto-col) or Slice Master (using the SM-NET protocol). The primary differ-ences between the protocols arethe maximum number of remotenodes which are supported and

the communication baud rates(see table on this page).

Easy, low-cost networkingTerminator I/O sytems can bedaisy chained to a distance of3900 feet from the localDirectLogic PLC - using a simpletwisted pair communicationcable. You can assign normalinput and output addressed tothe remote points by using a fewsimple lines of setup logic in yourRLL program. During operation, the Remote Master polls theslaves (T1K-RSSS) and sends theremote I/O status to the PLC CPU.

Mixing systemsTerminator I/O (T1K-RSSS)remote I/O systems can be mixedwith DL205 and 405 remote I/Osystems within the same channelas long as the same protocol RM-NET or SM-NET is being used.

Asynchronous communicationsThe communication betweenthe Remote Master and CPU isasynchronous to the CPU scan. For this reason, remote I/Oshould be used in applicationsthat do not require the remoteI/O points to update duringevery CPU scan. 1Consult the PLC section of this catalog for more details.

MODBUSThe Terminator I/O MODBUSnetwork interface module allowsyou to connect I/O as a slavestation on a MODBUS RTUnetwork. The T1K-MODBUS cancommunicate with any MODBUSRTU network master using highlevel MODBUS commands.

DirectLogic MODBUS communicationsSome of our DirectLogic PLCscan be used as MODBUSmasters, either directly througha communication port on theCPU or by adding a DCM module(consult the PLC section of thiscatalog).

Network configuration optionsYou can configure a simple point-to-point network using theRS232 port, or you can use theRS422 port to create a multidropnetwork. The T1K-MODBUS hastwo rotary switches that can beset to designate the module’sslave address. Set the rotaryswitches to give each slave aunique address in a range from1-90. The T1K-MODBUS alsohas an auxiliary RJ12 RS232serial port that can be used toconnect a local operator interfaceusing our K-sequence protocol.

Asynchronous communicationsIn most applications theMODBUS Master polls the slaves(T1K-MODBUS) and sends theslave I/O information to theMaster CPU. The communication

between the MODBUS Masterand CPU will often be asynchro-nous to the Master CPU scan. Forthis reason, applications shouldbe limited to those that do notrequire the I/O points to updateevery CPU scan.

NOTES:1: Shields should be grounded at the signal source.2: More than one external power supply can be used, provided all the power supply commons are connected.3: A Series 217, 0.032A fast-acting fuse is recommended for 4-20 mA current loops.4: If the power supply common of an external power supply is not connected to the 0V terminal on the module, then the output of the external trans-mitter must be isolated. To avoid "ground loop" errors, recommended 4-20 mA transmitter types are:-For 2 or 3 wire connections: Isolation betweenthe input supply signal and the power supply. -For 4 wire connections: Isolation between the input supply signal, the power supply and the 4-20mAoutput.
