Staff News

At the end of this term we farewell three staff from the St John’s Campus. Gary Robertson and Marianne Schirmer are retiring, and Mary Marker has resigned from her position in the ELC. We wish them all the best as they take on new adventures and we thank them for the wonderful service that they have given to our community. We will formally farewell them at our Closing Service.

Rachel Harrip and Alicia Puiatti will not be with us as they take a year off for maternity leave. We wish them and their families every blessing and look forward to hearing from them when their new babies arrive early in 2019.

It is anticipated that Mrs Julie Lugg will be returning to her role as Music teacher at the beginning of next year. We would like to thank Mrs Kylie Johns for her work with students in the Music area during Julie’s absence.

Mrs Tamara Martin has also been working as our Community Carer and we thank her for the way that she has quickly settled into this role during the term.

Monday, 10 December - Orientation/Preparation for 2019

We will be welcoming new students into our school on Monday, 10 December as they spend time with the cohort that they will be with next year. This will also be the day that students will meet and spend time with their teacher and their class for 2019. At the end of the day, the students will bring home their stationery information which will include a copy of their class list.

The process of allocating students to classes is a particularly challenging task as we seek to develop balanced classes while also considering a range of relevant information. As such, please understand that, as a general rule, we will not be

Other Staff Updates

We are delighted to announce that Mrs Tamara Martin has been appointed to the permanent part time position of Community Carer, commencing in 2019. As some of you would know, Tamara has been serving in a temporary capacity in this role over this past term. We look forward to Tamara becoming a permanent member of our St John’s Campus staff team.

We are also pleased to announce that Ms Lucy Burfield has been appointed as a permanent part time Educator in our ELC. Lucy has been working in our ELC on a casual basis for several years now.

Please note that we are currently advertising for a part time Inclusive Learning Teacher (previously known as a Learning Support). If you are interested in finding out more about this position please visit the College website for further details.

Year Level Coordinators

We are still needing many coordinators across the Campus. Please email Sue Drogemuller if you are able to support our community in this role.

Catherine Critchley Memorial Award

During our final Assembly this week, Mr Michael Paech presented the inaugural Catherine Critchley Award. This award has been created in memory of Mrs Catherine Critchley, one of our ELC educators who very sadly and suddenly died toward the end of the 2017 school year. The award will be presented each year for the next seven years to one of our graduating Year 6 students. After seven years, when last year’s ELC students graduate from our St John’s Campus, we will stop presenting this award.

The criteria that has been developed to guide the selection of the award winner includes:

a graduating Year 6 student who has demonstrated consistent consideration and regard for those around them, displaying care, compassion, empathy and support for othersa student who has consistently and humbly served the St John's Campus community and helped to make this school a better place, without expectation of reward or recognitiona student who has displayed sincerity, cooperation, honesty and truth in their interactions with others.

We are pleased to announce that this year the inaugural Catherine Critchley Award was presented to Victoria 6SH. Victoria is a Year 6 student who began her learning journey in the ELC in 2010. We congratulate Victoria on being presented with

this award.

On Wednesday, the anniversary of Catherine’s death, our staff also gathered before school started for a brief devotion led by Pastor Andrew Brook in memory of Catherine.

Thank You

With this being our final Concordia Connect newsletter for 2018 I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of our school year here at the St John’s Campus.

There are so many people who generously support us in so many amazing ways. Thank you to parents, friends of the College, staff and students for your commitment to and support of our College throughout this past year. It is a true blessing to be a part of this community.

I hope that you all enjoy a peaceful and joy-filled Christmas season as we celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. I also wish you a safe and refreshing holiday break and look forward to seeing you again next year.

Students and Families

I would also like to take this opportunity to farewell families (parents and students) that are leaving our St John’s Campus at the end of this year. We thank you for your contribution to our community during your time with us and wish you God’s blessing as you move on to new things.

 Reception Nativity Play

The Reception classes presented a wonderfully entertaining version of the Christmas story last week at the annual Nativity Play. In the play, Maurice the mule was determined to settle down for a nap, but those plans were thwarted when a string of uninvited visitors arrived one by one... before long there was even a baby in the manger! Well done to the staff and students involved in bringing together such an enjoyable sharing of the Christmas message.

Year 6 Camp at Mylor Adventure Camp

During Week 7, the Year 6 classes ventured to Mylor Baptist Camp for three days filled with outdoor adventure and laughter. Activities included bridge building, archery, team-building challenges, the ‘mud run’ and the giant swing. Students displayed the Learner Profile attributes of being a risk-taker, communication and care as they tried new skills, faced fears and endured wet weather and many clothing changes. It was the perfect opportunity for students to enjoy the company of peers as they approach the final few weeks at St John’s Campus.

Gaeste bei uns in der Grundschule

German classes across the year levels have been a hive of activity in the lead up to the Advent/Christmas season in Germany and other German speaking countries, with a range of guests coming in to be part of our lessons and share some wonderful learning experiences with our students.

Year 3R and Year 1R had the privilege of having Mr Martin and Mrs Ele Plewa from Germany (Leena and Tia’s grandparents) come and share a great deal about the season of Advent and Christmas, in particular in their village of Warendorf and their region in Germany located not far from the city of Muenster. They brought along many trinkets and shared an extensive PowerPoint presentation.

Year 3R and Year 6EH were privileged to have Bev and Heinrich Frehse (grandparents to William and Olivia H) come and share their experiences of living in Munich, Bavaria - in particular their traditions around Advent and Christmas. Bev and Heinrich brought in many special items that engaged students and further enriched their learning experience about German and Bavarian culture and traditions.

The Year 2 classes had the privilege of doing some special Advent/Christmas craft with Ingrid Bartlett (Zeles' grandmother). Ingrid focussed on the tradition of the “Adventskranz” (Advent wreath) in Germany and the great significance of Advent. Students made their own “Adventskranz” to take home and use during Advent.

We thank Martin and Ele, Bev and Heinrich, and Ingrid for the special times they shared with our students, giving them a wonderful insight into current German culture and language. We are incredibly blessed to have them as part of our wider school community.

 Year 2 Sleepover

The Year 2 Sleepover and Expo was held on Friday, 23 November. Students had a wonderful time sharing their wellbeing knowledge and amazing skipping skills to parents in the Hall at 6pm. Following this, a great night of games, laughter, movies, healthy snacks (and NOT a whole lot of sleep) was had! Thanks to the parents who assisted with breakfast in the morning. What a fabulous experience for everyone involved.

 Healthy Eating at Christmas

As we draw to the close of the school year some students enjoy giving cards or small gifts to their friends and classmates as a gesture of good will and to mark the coming of Christmas.

Whilst we do not encourage or discourage this practice, we do ask that gifts to other children do not include sweets and confectionery like candy canes. In the past, this well-intentioned practice has resulted in unhealthy amounts of chocolate

and sugar being consumed at school.

Of course, we respect the right of parents to choose what goes into their own child’s lunchbox.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this.

 From the Concordia Campus Principal

Welcome to the final edition of Concordia Connect for 2018. My hope is that during this hectic end of year busyness you may be encouraged by the joy the Advent season brings as we prepare to celebrate the coming of our Lord. As another year draws to a close, I am thankful for and celebrate all that God has done within our College.

Some highlights from this year include:

The continued strong reputation of our College within the community and the high demand for enrolmentThe warm and trusting relationships between the Campuses which continue to bond us as one R-12 CollegeThe wonderful manner in which the Year 12 class finished the year with respectfulness, inclusivity and joyful celebrationThe energy and enthusiasm of our student leaders who so humbly served the CollegeOur unified and embracing community spirit, strengthened by dedicated parent volunteers and wonderful community eventsThe wise guidance of our College Board as they govern the College and forge new strategic directions for the futureOur new partnerships with Flinders University and the University of Melbourne which will form the basis of our Vision for Learning research projectsThe emergence of a new College Vision for Learning, which will be finalised in 2019 and drive an innovative and dynamic approach to student engagement and wellbeingThe continued dedication of staff who serve with such passion and selfless commitmentOur amazing students who have a genuine love of learning.

Lastly and most importantly, I thank God once again for his greatest gift to us — Jesus. This Christmas season, how will we respond to this great gift? Let me suggest that whether we are kings, lowly shepherds or seekers, an appropriate response is to ensure the commercial trappings of Christmas are secondary to our focus on Jesus Christ and his lived example of

selfless love and forgiveness. It should be remembered that the greatest gift we can give our family and friends at Christmas is the gift of love.

Thank you for your support and partnership with us in 2018. I wish all of you a very happy and blessed Christmas.

 Connected Unley

Last week, the Year 8s took part in the annual Connected Unley program. Here are some of their reflections on the three-day event:

Throughout last week the Year 8s assisted the community by participating in ‘Connected Unley’, a program dedicated to serving our local community. Time was spent at The Salvation Army, where we heard inspiring stories about their hard work and determination to increase and encourage people’s community lives. We then visited the local museum and collected information from various places and historical artefacts scattered throughout the suburb.

The next day consisted of volunteering in different places around the neighbourhood. This involved numerous activities such as baking biscuits for the Mary Magdalene Centre at a local church, playing music and games at a nursing home, and packaging necessities for the homeless/people in need.

We faced many challenges, but as a team we overcame them. These acts have shone a light to many people in our community, helping them realise that there is a community out there who cares for them. It has also shown the Year 8s the importance of community and how much help can be provided, along with the difference that it makes.

Alyssa 8AMA

In Week 7, the Year 8s participated in Connected Unley. We applied our motto of “Engage, Achieve, Serve” in the Connected Unley program. We were split into two different class groups consisting of three classes per group and within our classes we were further separated into groups of three or four. The first class group had the classes 8VNT, 8LSI and 8JCA. These classes participated in Connected Unley on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday while the second class group of 8AMA, 8RCR and 8MRI were involved with Connected Unley on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On the first day of the Connected Unley program we engaged with the community of Unley. This involved receiving talks from the Head of The Salvation Army Unley, the Mayor of Unley Mr Michael Hewitson and Cultural Development Officer Mr Matthew Ives, as well as going around Unley to learn about its history and peoples. On the second day we actively served the community of Unley in a variety of different ways. Some students went over to The Salvation Army and made hygiene packs for the less fortunate members of the Unley community. On the third and last day of the Connected Unley program, our aim was to achieve. We reflected on what we did in the Connected Unley program. We came together in our groups and produced a video reflection, which not only was to be reflective and informative, but also showcased our creativity. The Connected Unley program was beneficial, not only to us, but to the entire community of Unley because we applied one of the most important commandments that Jesus taught in Mark 12:30-31: “… Love your neighbor as yourself …”

Drama Club this year saw our member numbers increase. From Term 2 onwards, 15 Year 10 & 11s would meet in the Drama Studio every Thursday afternoon for an hour to rehearse and prepare for their end of year shows. The focus is Theatre in Education, and this year we presented to our usual audience of Year 7s, but also to Year 8s. The topics were Managing Friendships and Developing Resilience. Both themes feature within the Year 7 curriculum, however for Middle School students to watch their senior peers perform and share with them is quite powerful.

Each Drama Club student chose to share their own experiences of when they were in Year 7, developing a show that looked at the reality of high school and all of its highs and lows.

Year 8 students Lara and Aaron said, "It was extremely relatable and raw to watch. I loved being able to see and connect with their stories."

"It was very engaging because it related to situations that some of us have experienced before."

All students are to be commended for their hard work, dedication and courage to step up and perform to their peers. I am so very proud of all they achieved this year.

 Coastal Conservation Classes

In what has become an anticipated event in the Year 10 Geography curriculum, students plan, construct and deliver an interactive lesson for the St John's Campus students, to learn about issues regarding conservation of our oceans. Students explore the impact of oil spills, sand dune erosion and plastic in our oceans with a hands-on (and messy!) activity, and learn how they can help. An amazing way to end the course and the year!

Happy Christmas - Music and Media Collaboration recording with HSCC

On Monday, 3 December approximately 60 St John's Campus students, five Concordia Campus Music students, Mr Noble and four professional musicians from the Hindley Street Country Club band, along with 16 Media students as crew, recorded a music video in our TV studio. The song was ‘Happy Christmas’. With a nativity scene, fairy lights and Santa outfits all packed into a very crowded studio it was a fun exercise enjoyed by all. It was particularly appreciated as a fine finish for me as the last class of my teaching career at Concordia. The cross-department school project was a dynamic way of showing what can be achieved when we bring people of different ages, talents and creative ideas together in a multi-faceted project celebrating Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ. Well done everyone! Watch out for its promotion on YouTube in the next week or so!

 Stage 2 Design & Technology

Our Year 12 Design & Technology students began the year by identifying a need or challenge which could be solved by manufacturing a product. Over the next three terms, they learnt the necessary skills and spent many hours designing, refining and prototyping their intended outcome. Through hard work and determination, every student successfully completed their own individual high-quality product and the collective culmination of their exceptional efforts was proudly displayed at the Annual Art Show exhibition. Well done to all students on their outstanding achievements throughout the year.

 Murtoa Showcase

Year 7 'Ancient Civilisations'

A key highlight of the Year 7 program is an Individual Study where students research, through the Global Context of Scientific and Technical Innovation, important and enduring contributions to human development that have been made by the people of a chosen civilisation or society. This task enables students to display the research and organisational skills they have developed over the course of the year and supports the acquisition of practical skills through the models they build to represent the 'enduring contribution'. Student work went on display on Thursday, 6 December during the Murtoa Showcase and our Year 7 students should be extremely proud of what they have achieved. There were many outstanding models and a great depth of analysis regarding the unique impact each of the enduring contributions had in the past and how this is still evident in the present day.

Year 8 Science Fair

One of the highlights for the Year 8s in 2018 is the ‘Science Fair’. During ‘Science Fair’ students had to design a practical task or science experiment (prac). This experiment had to have testable variables that could preferably be displayed numerically. Once the students had designed their prac they had to do the test. They had to organise a time, place and all the equipment.

Once all the students’ prac had been completed, the students had to work on displaying the information to students, teachers and parents. Students were judged on: Best Presentation (won by Amber 8AMA and Kate 8AMA), Most Innovative (won by Samuel 8AMA, Aidan 8AMA and Matthew 8AMA), People’s Choice (won by Noah 8LSI and Oscar 8LSI) and finally Overall Winner (Cameron 8JCA and Elijah 8JCA). The winners of these categories received a small prize and $20 to donate to Tear Australia to help people in need. Together the winners choose the following gifts:

Year 8 Lutheran Schools Public Speaking Competition

This year Concordia hosted the Year 8 Lutheran Schools Public Speaking Competition, which saw two students from each of seven Lutheran senior schools across the state competing for a perpetual shield. After a small internal competition of a high standard, Chelsea 8AMA and Amber 8AMA were chosen to represent Concordia. Chelsea spoke on the topic 'What a laugh' and Amber spoke about 'A glimmer of hope'. Both girls acquitted themselves very well. The competition was eventually won by St Martin’s College from Mount Gambier.

 Happy Christmas Recording

On Monday, 3 December, the Concordia Media Centre came alive with Christmas cheer! The Hindley Street Country Club again visited, this time to record the John Lennon classic “Happy Christmas (War is Over)”. Included on this recording though, were 60 St John’s Campus Year 3 and 4 students, Yasmin, Lily and Lauren (Year 11), Ethan (Year 10) and Ted (Year 7), as well as Kat Sanchse from “The Voice” and Mat Noble (Director of Music, Concordia Campus).

Recording can be a time consuming and difficult process, but the high level of concentration and professionalism shown by all students was outstanding. Particularly impressive was the energy and humour the Year 3 and 4 students brought to the session. This cross-campus collaboration was videoed and recorded by Year 10 Media students under the direction of David Modra and Simon Kuchel, and will be available online within a week or so. When the video goes live, please share it with your friends and relatives, as I’m sure it will certainly put you in a festive, thankful mood.

Congratulations to all involved!

Christmas… Where Love comes to Life

You may have seen a new addition to the Concordia College sign on the corner of Cheltenham and Balmoral Streets, outside the Chapel. A large nativity scene has been installed by St John’s Lutheran Church. St John’s have the same nativity scene located outside the Church, on the corner of Marlborough and Balmoral Streets.

Lit up at night, these scenes reflect the real meaning of Christmas: the good news of the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas really is where God’s love comes to life.

Thanks to Mitre 10 Malvern for their generous sponsorship and to the builders, David Modra, Mark Borgas and Rhys de Dezsery.

St John’s Lutheran Church welcomes you all to celebrate Christmas at these services:

 Sheltered Walkway Project

Work has now commenced on the construction of a sheltered walkway in the shared community sport zone between the two Concordia campuses, along the edge of the oval and tennis courts.

It is hoped that this project, which has the support of the Government of South Australia, will be completed in the December/January holiday break.

We look forward to students, parents and community members benefiting from the upgrade once the construction is completed next year.
