Term 4 Newsletter – April 2018 Dear All, Thank you for taking the time to read our Easter Newsletter, as always, so much has happened since the last newsletter that there is a lot to cover. At this time of year we start to gear up for the summer GCSE and A Level exams this means the school is very busy with preparations, Easter revision classes, weekends and after schools. This year’s Y11 and Y13 are already working very hard and early indications show they are poised for success and some of the best results we have ever seen. This is testament to the hard work of the students, parents and our staff team and I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their hard work in maximising their chances of success. Unusually for this time of year, we had a spell of heavy snow and icy conditions forcing us to close; it is always difficult to make a decision to close the school but this was made a lot easier by the wealth of parent support and feedback that I received. With lots of work set on SMHW and good use of our parent communication channels we managed to navigate the conditions and ensure the impact of both safety and academic study was minimised. Thank you for this support and hopefully we won’t have to make this decision again for a long time! Term 5 and 6 will be packed full of events, opportunities and celebrations, please check in regularly to our website and Facebook page for up to the minute news and information. Behaviour Policy Thank you to everyone who has supported the recent changes to our behaviour policy. The changes are aimed at reducing low- mid level disruption in classes. We have already started to make an impact on the number of students being issued a detention for a C2 which are dropping, week by week, alongside reports from students and teachers that classroom behaviour has noticeably improved. The governing body and I will continue to ensure that firm boundaries are in place and that the school meets the needs of the majority of students who want to learn without disruption. Next term there will be a drive on school uniform compliance, giving students a chance over the Easter break to replace any missing or damaged items of uniform. Building Updates Following the completion of our new roofing and exterior, we have recently received news that we have been successful with our most recent school development bids. In this year’s bids we have been awarded full funding for a brand new and much needed sports hall facility as well as funding for the completion of the curtain walling that will cover the back of the M block and Concourse areas. This will mean double-glazing and new doors/ panelling for the the oldest school buildings and an exciting new build to extend our sports provision. I look forward to updating you on this work as it develops throughout the year.
