Stage 5 Timber & Metal Technology

The Industrial Technology rooms are currently a hive of activity, with most students now having commenced their major projects for this year. Skill level is high and effort is top notch thanks to some keen students, creative designs and solid classroom intentions and work ethic. Major projects include; numerous coffee tables in various shapes and designs, outdoor seats, desks, work benches, clocks, bridges and a variety of other projects. Great effort Year 9 and 10. As I always say, let's continue to "make some stuff."

What a start to the term We have had several activities already in these past two weeks. We have had our Ag students assist Egelabra in the Ram Sales, Cricket against Gulargambone, Tennis in Tottenham and Horse Sports. These have been made possible by the staff and students of WCS working together with local and broader communities and schools within the area. Each experience has been rewarding for all involved and we will continue to endeavour to give students opportunities that enhance their education and social lives.

We have been fortunate enough to celebrate NAIDOC week during week 2. A thank you goes to the efforts of June Hawkes, Phyllis Oates, Allison fuller and the staff of WCS. It was a great week with the Flag Raising Ceremony, trivia, classroom activities, community BBQ and a dance workshop and performance. Well done to all staff and students and thank you to the community for your attendance across the week.

Over the next two weeks we have a Year 10 Careers Day in conjunction with the Warren Shire Council and a Trade Day with local tradies, which will showcase what options are available for our students in Warren. Other upcoming events include Kindergarten Orientation Days on Fridays, the P&C Pizza and Pasta Night, Grip leadership for Secondary Students, year 8 Valid Testing and the K-12 Dental Clinic.

It has been another busy but enjoyable start to the term.

Could I please ask that parents and carers report to the office if they wish to see any staff or students at school. This is to ensure the safety of all staff and students while at WCS and is compulsory as part of WHS requirements.

Please ensure that all notes have been returned for the upcoming Swimming Scheme program.

Have a great week

English HSIE Faculty Welcome to Term 4! Just like every other term, Term 4 is jam packed with a variety of learning opportunities for our students. Students have their yearly exams in Week 6 and should be busily revising.

We are very fortunate to have Mr Cameron Thomson completing his internship in the English/HSIE Faculty. He has been studying at the University of Western Sydney and will be a fully qualified teacher at the end of this practicum. Mr Thomson is currently working with Year 7 English, 9/10 Aboriginal Studies, 9/10 Gold English and Year 11 Standard English.

This week is NAIDOC Week at Warren Central School. Our Aboriginal Team have put together an array of interesting activities across the week. We hope to see you at some of these events!

Below is a snapshot of what some of the faculty’s classes are studying. Enjoy the photos!

Year 9 Geography have been studying natural hazards and disasters, including bushfires, droughts, storms, earthquakes and tropical cyclones –phenomena that everyone is Australia, young and old, has some first-hand experience of. Students will investigate a natural disaster of their choice and perhaps come up with strategies to manage our responses to the cyclical extremities of Australian weather.

Year 8 English students are doing a film study of the iconic ‘Shrek’. In addition to responding to it as entertainment, students will immerse themselves in analysing film techniques, including genre conventions, character, camera shots and angles and sound track. Representation and analysis are key to the English continuum and hopefully an informed opinion leads to deeper appreciation.

Year 8 History are studying Ancient Egypt as their Depth Study 2. They have been learning about the different facets of life such as how society was organised, laws, religion and funerary practices. They are looking forward to participating in their very own archaeological dig!

9/10 Green English have been reading the novel ‘Raw’ by Scott Monk. They are also completing their folio assessment task.

Stage 4 LOTE are making progress in their basic French phrases, having lost a little fear and gained a little familiarity. Most are bilingual in basic addition and subtraction which keeps those synapses firing and the brain fit and supple. Research has shown that studying a second language helps improve the home language and other subjects as well so all is not lost if travel is not on the agenda!

9/10 Gold English have been studying film and have analysed scenes from ‘Red Dog’.

Year 11 Standard English have researched the conditions on the Western Front during World War I as part of the context for their study of Wilfred Owen’s war poems.

Pre-Service Teacher Mr Cameron Thomson

As a pre-service teacher, one of the learning activities that I have implemented into my classes (Year 7-10) is a literacy strand at the beginning of every lesson to stimulate students’ higher-order thinking skills and

support effective transition between those learning activities, especially in the later parts of a school day. What this involves is a nine-square word approach, where students are given nine letters and have to make as many words with those letters as possible. This activity, which Head Teacher English/HSIE Judy Smith supported me to implement, has made a substantial change in attitudes towards learning and reduced behavioural problems in the classroom – everyone seems to love it!

Aboriginal Studies Stage 5 is a fantastic learning opportunity for students and teachers to develop their knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and the rich connection that students have to Warren Central School and the wider community. On Friday in class, we started our new topic of Aboriginal Sport where students undertook a research task to develop their awareness of how Indigenous games and cultural artefacts have been adapted into our modern conceptions of NRL and AFL. We focussed on Marn Grook, a collection of Indigenous Games that bears strong resemblance to the AFL and as a class began to discuss how Aboriginal culture is alive is well in Australian sport. Following this, each student of the class selected an Indigenous game to research. We went outside into the lovely sunshine, where each student presented what their game was, the origins, the importance, and how variations can be made of the game to suit the players. The students and teacher (myself) then participated in the game (coordinated by the student who researched it) and we all had a fantastic time! I believe this kind of pedagogy is instrumental in not only informing students about the value of Aboriginal culture and sport to their education, but also mixing the learning the activities up and ensuring that students have the opportunity to physically participate in sports that they research. Gobondery/NARRAF Tennis Day Selected students will be competing in the Gobondery/NARRAF Tennis day at Tottenham. This will be held on Friday 21 October. The team consists of Logan Hewett, Jaziah Amatto-Shepherd, Zephyr Nielsen, Coby Hall, Kallie-Lea Daley, Lakkari-Lee Williams, Lilly Higgins and Natalie Walters.

School Swimming Scheme

The School Swimming Scheme is running again this year.

The Department of Education and Training School Swimming Scheme is an intensive learn to swim program, which develops water confidence and provides students with basic skills in water safety and survival. The Scheme is conducted over ten days. Each daily lesson is 45 minutes.

The Scheme will continue daily for two weeks from 14 November to 25 November 2016.

Please assist us in organising this program by returning notes and money to the front office as soon as possible. All notes and money need to be returned by Friday 28 October.

Absences Please remember to send in a note or phone the school if your child is away sick or for any other reason. This is a legal requirement. If your child has more than one day off please send a note for the whole time they are away as we cannot automatically assume that because they are sick one day, they are still sick.

Descriptive passages about a giant. The Giant All of a sudden a shadow blocked the sun. I looked up to see the most enormous giant I had ever seen. His Hair was sticking up like he had recently been struck by lightning. His eyes were as dark as midnight and his ears had chunks missing from the sides. His nose was so big that I thought it was a watermelon. His mouth was as tall as a tree. His teeth were like razor blades and his feet were webbed like a frog. His shoulders were bigger then wrecking balls and his hands were as big as a truck. His legs were hairier than an overgrown field of grass. He would have been 10 metres tall! Andrew Smith

The Giant I was walking along the street when I saw a shadow covering the sun’s light. I looked up and saw a huge beast standing right in front of me. It was so ugly I couldn’t look at it. He had ugly, monstrous black and yellow teeth and three huge warts on his red nose. The beast had normal looking skin but on the end of his feet were four, big, blue toes. His head had two horns with green and pink hair. His body was two feet wide and he was a towering ten metres tall. His hands were big and thick and he would have weighed at least a thousand kilograms. Zephyr Nielsen

Dear Parents / Caregivers

Health Western NSW Local Health District has a Mobile Oral Health Centre (MOHC) that will be based in Warren for 10 weeks starting in November. This is a clinic that provides free dental care (examinations and treatment) to all children under the age of 18 years.

Dental Clinicians will be undertaking screenings for students who attend Warren Central School on Wednesday 2 November 2016. Screenings will only take several minutes, from which a letter will be sent home to parents informing them of any issues that have been identified. If follow up treatment is indicated, parents can choose to seek treatment from their family Dentist, or access the free public dental care provided by the MOHC whilst in Warren. Parents who have children who require urgent treatment will be contacted by phone.

If you would like your child to attend the Clinic for a Screening Test, complete the attached Consent Form and return it to your child’s Classroom Teacher (Primary) or Year Advisor (Secondary). Please contact the school if you have any queries.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Jenny Brooker Head Teacher Wellbeing
