DEAR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY OF SAINT JOHN'S COLLEGE

"Parents, your commitment to us demonstrates to your son that Saint John’s is not just his school but that we are all members of this community, and that his education matters."

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents

I write this at a time when our Year 8 boys who have enrolled in Saint John’s for 2018 are on site for their orientation day, and I am reminded at this time of year how life moves in cycles. Only two weeks ago we were farewelling young men who had journeyed their five years of secondary school with us, and today we welcome in the next generation of young bright eyed boys who are excited about becoming part of our fine school. Likewise a number of staff will leave us at the end of the year and already we have appointed quality teachers for 2018 who are excited to become part of our team. People will always move through a school: Saint John’s is more than 55 years old and will be here long after we are gone. We all have a duty to honour the past by doing our very best in the present and when it is our time to move on we leave part of ourselves behind, but take with us an invaluable lifelong connection to Saint John’s College.

As we come toward the end of another great year I thank those of you who have volunteered in some capacity at Saint John’s this year. Not only does this help us tremendously as a school but you are also sending a clear message to your son. Your commitment to us demonstrates to your son that Saint John’s is not just his school but that we are all members of this community, and that his education matters. There are countless ways in which parents can become involved in our school, so please speak to the PTFA or one of the staff at the College if you are able to help in some way, and know that your son will be the better for it.

A great school is one where we all take responsibility for maintaining our culture, when the collective take it upon themselves to keep and share the traditions and philosophies that we have all bought into. In this way we can continue to grow stronger together and, just as importantly, those that join will quickly become one of us and in turn contribute to the whole.

I look forward to 2018 with confidence and genuine excitement, and meeting the future young men of Saint John’s this morning solidifies those sentiments.

Have a blessed Christmas break with your families.

God Bless.

- Shane Tong, Principal

FAREWELL MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Saying goodbye and leaving St John’s College is no easy feat. It is during this time of bidding farewell that I have found myself reflecting on the past 7 ½ years that have flown by.

A single word comes to mind: grateful. I am grateful to the Staff who have assisted me as DRS to build and maintain a vibrant Marist culture. I am grateful to the parents and wider community for their acceptance and support. I am mostly grateful to the boys of SJC. They are the heartbeat. Their energy, sense of humour and optimism have made my time here memorable.

This message is for the students, ‘my boys’. Young men, stay true to what is good and right. Strive to have a humble, thankful heart that is quick to forgive and to tolerate differences in others.

Do not have a sense of entitlement, but rather work hard to provide and to make your loved ones proud of you. As Marists, we need to think of what we can bring to the table and not what we can take from it.

You have been created for a higher purpose; to serve, to assist the down-trodden and to speak up for the weak. We are all members of the Lord’s Army, so put on the whole armour of God to stand against the schemes of the devil. Wear a belt of truth, a breastplate of righteousness, a shield of faith, a helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. God will assist you on your mission to make Jesus known and loved through your actions.

Remember that our Creator God carries us in the palm of his hand. He knitted us together and knew us before we were born. We matter. Gentlemen, wear the Eagle with pride and follow in the footsteps of St John the Apostle. He was a ‘man of thunder’, who showed his love and loyalty by remaining with Jesus until the very end. You are fearfully and wonderfully made and it has been an absolute pleasure to teach and serve you. Thank you for the love and respect that you have shown me.

In the Spirit of St John and God’s richest blessings.

- Mrs Sonja Maree, Director of Religious Studies

OUR GENEROUS COMMUNITY

We have the most wonderfully generous St John’s College community here, who truly understand and practice Family Spirit and Living in the Way of Mary. There are countless examples, every single day, of generosity and care for our students.

Some of our students and their families do struggle, financially, to meet the costs of their school fees, sports and activities fees and we have many parents and Old Boys who make payments on their behalf, most often for boys they don’t know personally. For example, ten of our Year 13 students were able to attend the Leaver’s Dinner this year because of generous donations, and other families donated extra tickets for the Sports Awards event.

Some parents offer transport or food when they see a student who needs some extra help, and many others offer their time as coaches, managers, fundraisers and supporters. Our Johnnie’s Angels supply meals and support for families experiencing times of real hardship, and our PTFA help to make our community evenings and events special.

All of you help us to look after our boys, and we extend a giant Thank You to each and every one of you.

If you’d like to make a contribution to the care of our young men, please contact the College office.

2017 INTER-HOUSE COMPETITION

In 2017 Inter-House competition has continued to grow and we saw student organised events for the first time ever, alongside many of our traditional events. The competition kicked off in Term 4 of last year with the Junior Four Corner Touch competition. During term one, alongside the Year Nine Haka competition and Year 13 leadership competition days were the big sports events, Athletics and Swimming Sports.

We had awesome participation on Athletics Day and Chanel won both the track and field events amassing a total raw score of 1091. The other three houses had only 23 points separating them with Pompallier on 933, Marcellin on 930 and Roncalli on 910. The Swimming sports followed the successful format from last year with a non-competitive section running alongside the competitive section. Again this saw the whole school involved and was an outstanding success. Roncalli blew everyone away with very strong competitive swimmers. Chanel’s effort in the non-competitive section was enough to secure a second placing.

Chanel were looking hard to beat with 190 competition points at this stage and the other houses had to play catch up - Pompallier is second on 153, Roncalli 149 and Marcellin 114.

Pompallier beat Chanel in the cross country to start closing the gap. Mr Hudson’s Māori Language competition ran over a week and saw Marcellin students win convincingly with Pompallier second. Attendance and Marist Merit totals for each house were tallied up at the end of each term and also contributed towards competition. By this stage Chanel had won three events including the big one, Athletic Sports, and were sitting on top of the table with 258 points. Pompellier had won two including the Cross Country, which combined with second placing in the Athletic Sports saw them sitting on second with 234 points.

In Term Three Pompallier went ballistic. They organised and won the Mel Young Memorial 3x3 Basketball competitions putting them into first place. They continued strongly and placed first or second in all the remaining events, including first in the year nine and ten Writing Competitions and second in the Haka Competition. This late burst led them to a historic victory. Historic, as it is the first time a house has come from behind at the start of Term 3 to win the House Competition. It is also only the second time Pompallier has won the competition.

A big thank you to fellow staff House teachers Mrs Fairweather (Marcellin), Mr Millar (Pompallier), Mrs Roach (Roncalli) and all staff who helped organise, run, support or calculate points for the Inter-House Competition 2017. Thank you to our House leaders: Mitchell Whelan and Hayden Mulgrew (Chanel); Drew Ngapo and Zane Sheeran (Marcellin); Josh Stevens and Nicholas Fitzgerald (Pompallier); and Joseph Downey and Jordan Cooper (Roncalli).

House points are kept up to date on the School website. http://www.stjohns-hamilton.school.nz/Community/test

INTERNATIONAL

St John’s College has a very high reputation in the international community which results in high enrolments from various countries. Our international students do very well here because of the dedication of our teaching staff. Participation in cultural and sporting activities is also very strong. We offer small English language classes of just a few students which is a major point of difference.

Donald Stark is the perfect man to be International Dean as he is fluent in multiple languages and shows a great care for our young international men. Anita Sopers, our Homestay Coordinator and Tracey Hockey in Learning Support are also highly valued members of the team.

St John’s College definitely has a strong family spirit where students go from strength to strength. To all our Year 13 leavers, we thank you for your presence with us, and we wish you all the very best. We hope you will fly high like the eagle of St John’s.

SCIENCE SUCCESS

Aidan Rowlingson - Powering Potential Award

The Royal Society Te Apārangi offers 40 places to Year 12 /13 students to attend Powering Potential, an event where students work in teams with a mentor scientist to address challenging science issues. Powering Potential takes place 11 – 14 December 2017 in Wellington.

Aidan Rowlingson was awarded a fully funded place at this annual event after submitting a video presentation outlining why he should be considered. This is a prestigious award and it is the first time one of our top Science students has won this award. Congratulations Aidan on what is surely an important opportunity to developing a stellar career in the Sciences.

Joshua Sturgeon - Rotary Scholarship

Joshua Sturgeon, our top Year 12 Science student, has been awarded a Rotary Scholarship to attend the Science Technology Forum for two weeks at Auckland University in January 2018. Joshua will join 180 of the best science students in New Zealand.

These students attend daily modules and lectures which will expose them to the Biological Sciences, Biological Engineering, Chemistry, Electronic/Robotics, Physics, Psychology, Geological Sciences and Astronomy. Joshua is bound to enjoy this all tremendously along with, of course, the social experience of boarding at University Hall.

Two other science students Elan McInerney and Andrew Walker will attend the Hands on Science summer school at Dunedin’s Otago University at the same time.

CRICKET

Term 4 2017 has seen the SJC First XI rejoin the Hamilton Senior Men's competition for the first time in over a decade. The boys have started the competition going unbeaten in the first round of limited overs matches including wins against Star University, Melville and Eastlink. Highlights of the first few rounds include half centuries for James Halloway, Cameron Burgess, Harrison Pedersen and Grant King as well as six wickets for recent Old Boy Joshua Burgess against Eastlink.

The Junior teams have also started the Term 4 competition in superb form with seven wins out of nine games so far. Sam Kelly scored his first century for the school in the Colts' fixture against Morrinsville and Michael Chatwin has scored consecutive fifties for the Year 9 Gold team.

St. John's would like to celebrate the selection of Alex Clare and Nicholas Farrell for the Northern Districts Under 19s squad. Nicholas is a current Year 13 student and Alex graduated in 2016. Both were key members of the SJC 1st XI in recent years and fully deserve their success. We wish Alex and Nicholas the best of luck for that national U19 tournament at the end of the year.

- Mr A Sykes, T.I.C Cricket

SOFTBALL

Our softballers copped a tough start to the season, facing Hamilton Boys High A on a wet and miserable first outing at Resthills Park. The team battled well but unfortunately didn’t secure a first up win.

The next game was versus Hillcrest High and with great fielding and batting, we won 15 – 1. Hausia Vea’s pace in the short-stop position made it a hard day at the park for their batters. Our most recent game was against Hamilton Boys High B (with a few of their A players). It was a great game for our Johnnies team, taking the win 6 – 3. Highlights include Jacob Quintal catching the ball for a double play in second base and Joe Robwata’s fast paced fielding to first base which led to a number of outs. A number of our boys have been successful in making rep teams this season, congratulations to them (see Sidebar).

SJC FOOTBALLERS COMPETING AT THE NATIONAL AGE GROUPS

Congratulations to Sebastian (Konig) Arnaiz, Ivan Alonso Fowler, Nate Hallam, Gabriel Jhang & Jerson Lagos who have all been selected to represent the Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation (WaiBOP) at the 15th Grade National Age Group tournament in Wellington from Wednesday 13th – Saturday 17th December.

This tournament has the country’s top 400 young talented footballers on show from all seven federations. This is where the future stars of the game showcase their skills & talent and further strengthen football in New Zealand for upcoming World Cup campaigns.

In being selected the boys have been watched throughout the winter in both secondary & federation competitions and have also had to attend several FTC camps. Our five St John’s boys are amongst the region’s top players with only 18 players were selected. This is a huge accomplishment for each of the boys and to have five from St John’s College is testament to the quality of coaching and talent we currently have at the College.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT

I had the privilege of being the Board of Trustees rep for 2017. As a Year 13 student, I've learned valuable skills which will be useful after I leave school. I encourage other students to take the opportunity of running for BOT rep in the coming years, because it provides a new life experience which you can always use. As a Board member, I was part of a team that played a key role in making decisions which will affect present and future students.

When I took over the position as BOT student rep, I was also fortunate enough to be able to attend a Spirit of Adventure course which included teachings on how to be a proper Board member and the various rules for the Board. The hardest rule for me was keeping the meetings confidential, which meant that unless information was already released to the school or public I was unable to share any information with others. I also observed how the different Board members were able to use their careers and life experience to contribute skills for the meetings, whether it was finance or religious matters and from this, I benefitted.

I’ve also helped to develop our plans for a new gymnasium which will make the school an even better place that future students will appreciate and strive for excellence. I wish the next BOT student rep the best of luck for the future and hopefully they’ll learn as much as I did, if not more.

- Dylan Ryan

New BOT Student Rep – Damien Peers

Congratulations to Damien Peers who was elected by students to represent them on the Board of Trustees for the 2018 year.

STAFF FAREWELLS

Tracey Hockey has been a Learning Assistant helping students with special needs and more recently in the International Department as an English Language tutor. She is a very qualified and professional person who always takes a genuine and caring interest in the students. She will be greatly missed by us all. She is also a competent linguist, singer and enjoys playing basketball. We wish her well as she embarks on the next stage in her life.

- D Stark, International Dean

We farewell Mrs. Maryellen Bezzant as she moves into retirement after 7 years of service to the College as Sports Coordinator. While in her role, Maryellen has been a driving force for encouraging non participants to get involved in sport and devoted most of her personal time and energy to her passion sport, basketball. Notably, she managed our Junior A Grade programme this year which fielded 8 teams in local competition. Thank you Maryellen for your service to the College and we wish you all the best as you journey on.

- R Overmayer, Director of Sports

Amid the laughter, conviviality and collegiality in the English Faculty, it is difficult to say our goodbyes to two stalwarts of our department, Hinemutu Lewis and Drew Tierney. Hinemutu has given 14 years’ service in her role as Assistant HOF, with responsibility for the junior programme, and speech and writing competitions. Hinemutu is the mother hen of the department who still manages to scandalise us regularly with her outrageous comedic outbursts. She is taking up the curriculum leadership position for senior English at Tai Wainanga ki Ruakura. The level of her contribution to the college cannot be overstated, from staff BOT Rep, to the coach of PB4L, sports, and a leader of the Māori Achievement group. Hinemutu’s positive, caring and professional relationship she has with our students, past and present, make her a great loss to us, however, we also celebrate the opportunity for her to take up a well-deserved promotion.

Similarly, Drew Tierney leaves us for the Assistant HOF role at Cambridge High School. Drew has served at St John’s for 11 years, and contributed in all manner of ways from staff BOT rep, TIC rowing, and two rounds of Dean. Drew is the Swiss watch of teachers: ever reliable, always on time, and never skips a beat. Drew is well respected as a teacher and a colleague, and he too, is so deserving of his new role. As a new HOF, I cannot thank you both enough for your unwavering guidance and support as I have found my feet. It has been an absolute privilege to work with you both, and I look forward to doing so again in the future.

- R Hutchinson, HOF English

We farewell Sarah Quinnell from her role as the Careers Adviser. Having come from a similar role at Fraser, Sarah brought with her a wealth of knowledge and professionalism. She has supported many of our senior students to identify pathways after school, and has led the careers education for our junior students. Sarah has rightly earned a promotion and is moving to Greymouth College as an Assistant Principal.

Our Director of Religious Studies, Mrs Sonja Maree is a very special person to our community and in so many ways she has been a Mother figure to the boys - our very own Mary. Mrs Maree’s influence in our College has been far-reaching and she has taken pastoral care to a level very rarely seen. If there is a better example of someone “living in the way of Mary” we have yet to see it. Sonja has been appointed as Deputy Principal at Waikato Diocesan School and we wish her all the very best.

YEAR 9 RUGBY 7’S WINNERS

The future of 7's Rugby at Saint John's College is looking bright after our Year 9 team took out the Hamilton Boys' High School Joe Webber Trophy. The tournament ran over four weeks and the team grew from strength to strength each week. They finished top of the table and faced a very structured and controlled St Paul's team in the final. The Year 9 team got off to a very shaky start and were down 0-3 at one stage. However, the team composed themselves and came back to win 5-3. Stand out players for the season were Jonte Rikiriki and captain Brayden Oakes.

- Mr Paul Ardern

SJC ROWING TAKES OUT INAUGURAL HEAD OF THE WAIKATO RACE

The St John’s College Under 17 Coxed Quad took out the first Head of the Waikato race. A Head Race is a race against other crews – and the river! Racing upstream from Ann St to the Hamilton Rowing Club, the crew of Zak Ellison, Alex Andersen, Mitchell Evans, Jacob Dunn and coxswain Logan Burgess, defeated eight other crews to cover the distance in the fastest time.

19 boys and 4 coxswains are competing for St John’s College this season. The boys have been training hard with the regattas starting in earnest in December, culminating in the Maadi Cup in Twizel, 17-25 March.

Team bonding has included a session up to the top of the Hakarimatas - Zak even ran it twice!

Our new Head Coach is Louise Beaumont who is vastly experienced. She is a Henley winning coxswain and has coached crews at Oxford-Brookes University and Leander Boat Club in England. Other coaches include Jemima Hylton (triple gold medal coach from Maadi last year with St Peter’s School), Brendan O’Halloran (very successful rower and old boy of St John’s College) as well as Mr Tierney (TIC Rowing). We are also supported by former Olympic rower Rob Hamill.

The boys are primed for another great year of rowing at St John’s College.

Special thanks to our sponsors:

AVK Valves, Schick Construction, A-Line Sheetmetals, Sportcraft Boats, The Kiwi Chocolate Company, Two Birds Eatery and Harcourts Realty.

YEAR 9 INTERCLASS RUGBY TOURNAMENTThis is a traditional and intensely competitive fixture in the St John’s Calendar. Each class fields a rugby team for a tournament played over the lunch breaks. 9L played 9M in the final this year, with 9L winning 4-2.

NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS BARBARIANS JERSEY

Siave Seti was selected for the NZ Secondary Schools Training Squad, and attended an initial 3 day training camp in Palmerston North.

He was then named in the NZ Secondary Schools Barbarian Team and started as winger in their two matches against Tonga U18 and the NZ Māori U18 team, being victorious in both.

We are very proud of Siave and to have St John’s represented at this level, and we are very grateful to Siave for donating one of his jerseys to the school. Here’s hoping we continue to see Siave perform at the highest level.

Logan Burgess (cox), Zak Ellison, Mitchell Evans, Alex Andersen, Jacob Dunn and Jemima Hylton (coach)

YOUTH ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Term 4 saw a massive increase in the youth physical development program running twice weekly at St John’s College. Over 40 future Johnnies and Hearts (years 6-8 students) come out for a bit of a fun, team building and physical training led by coaches Pichardo and Sommerfield, PhD students through AUT SPRINZ. Can’t wait to meet the rest next year! If you have a child year 6-8 that would be interested in the program next year, please contact Andrew Pichardo at [email protected].

YEAR 9 & 10 ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME RESEARCH

Around 100 Year 9 and 10 students in the Athlete Development Program and several PE classes are subjects in a year-long research program assessing the effects of different types of training on sport performance, risk of injury markers and movement skill. Now that all the data has been collected, the next step is analysing the data, assessing results and publishing the findings in peer-reviewed journals. See the Conference Abstract in sidebox for some preliminary findings. This ADP programme and research sets St John’s College apart from other schools. By having specialist physical trainers working under the supervision of world-leading sports scientists at AUT, we are learning how to care for and prepare our young men for a lifetime of healthy exercise and physical activity. Our more promising athletes are taught to train safely, minimise risk of injury, and develop key strengths to enhance their physical performance in their chosen sport. But all of our students can work with our coach at a morning or after school session and receive that same level of expert training.

Thank you to our sponsor’s Winger Suzuki and Heinz Watties for their contributions to the programme.

IE-LAVALAVA UNIFORM OPTIONOur Pasifika students have been asking for an ie-lavalava to be added to the College uniform, and we’re delighted to announce that we now have one. The ie-lavalava is in the same navy drill as the school shorts, with a gold crest at the bottom. This gives students and families an option which acknowledges their identity and heritage as well as embracing them within St John’s College. The ie-lavalava will be sold through the College office only from January 22nd 2018 (not at the NZ Uniform store) and will cost $50. Now that we have a College ie-lavalava, students are no longer allowed to wear a different, plain ie-lavalava.

LEAVER’S DINNERWe farewelled our Year 13 students and other leavers with a special dinner event on 1 November. This evening honours our fine young men, allows them to reflect on their time at St John’s and acknowledges that they are setting off for new horizons. Thanks to our fabulous band of PTFA parents and Year 12 student helpers, the gym was dressed up to create a very special atmosphere for the 270 students, parents and caregivers that attended. They enjoyed entertainment throughout the evening from Tyrell Tamaki, Christian Tong and Ben Wilson, and were treated to a delicious buffet dinner catered by Big River Caterers. Jake Flanagan delivered an inspiring final speech on behalf of his fellow Year 13 cohort.Kevin Kenrick, CEO of TVNZ and a St John’s Old Boy, spoke to the boys about making every day count and loving what you do with your day. Paul Barnett of the Old Boy’s Foundation presented our student leaders with an Old Boy’s tie, and all the leavers were invited to register with the Old Boy’s Network and receive the gift of a tie. Most importantly, our young men spent time with their parents and friends to enjoy the fellowship and brotherhood of being a Johnnie’s Boy.Once again, we are very grateful to the many people who helped make this event so special.
