MMWaC Academic Day Our MMWaC Academic Day will be held on Wednesday 26th September from 9am. Students are now

practising their spelling words to try out for the spelling bee as well as learning times tables for the

Maths comp. We will let you know the students who will be representing us on the day.

We have had new signage placed on the side of the admin block making

it really obvious about our school values.

The winter vegetables planted in our vege gardens are growing well. We have broccoli, cauliflower,

carrots, beetroot and snow peas coming along nicely.

NAPLAN online This term from 20 August to 7 September, schools across NSW, who have not taken part in the initial

administration of NAPLAN online, will again be participating in the NAPLAN Online School Readiness

Test.

The school readiness test is a ‘practice run’ designed to help schools assess their technical and adminis-

trative readiness for the transition to NAPLAN Online.

Wisemans Ferry Public School students in Years 3 and 5 will be participating in the readiness test during

week 5. The readiness test will involve students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 sitting two, 40-minute assessments,

a writing test and a combined numeracy/literacy test. (Year 3 students will not participate in the writing

test).

Student participation in the readiness test is an opportunity for them to become familiar with the

NAPLAN Online test format.

It is important to note that participation in the school readiness test has no effect on students’

NAPLAN results from the paper-based tests students sat in May.

There’s a lot more information on the department’s NAPLAN Online website: https://

education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/student-assessment/naplan-online

School Parking For the safety of your children, parking is not permitted in the school carpark between the hours of

8.30-9.15am and 2.15-3pm. Also, there is no car parking in the bus zone at the front of the school. The

safety of your children is extremely important to us.

General Reminders Students are to arrive to school on time each day.

All clothing and hats should be clearly marked with names.

Student pencil cases should be checked so students have plenty of pens/pencils/glue stick/etc.

When parents and friends come to the school, they must go to the office first. This is a Legal and Work-

place Safety requirement and followed for the safety and security of all students and teachers.

Parents are always welcome to make an appointment anytime to meet with the teacher about their child’s

progress, problems that may arise, ideas, etc. The education of your child is a team effort.

SRC Fathers Day Stall Once again the SRC are holding a Fathers’ Day stall on Friday 31st August 2018.

Please help out by sending in a small gift or two to place on the stall. They will

be selling the gifts in a price range from $2.00 to $10.00. Thank you.

‘Ferry’ Award System How the Ferry Award System works: So as to ensure this system means the rewards are prestigious and

well earned, ‘Ferries’ will be allocated out on a 1 award per 5 children ratio. This means that children

would generally receive 1-2 ‘Ferries’ per semester. The extra ‘Ferries’ that teachers have to give out are

for those children who are consistently working hard in the classroom and identified as outstanding

school citizens who take the initiative to help others around the school.

Please keep awards safe as they need to be handed in to Mrs Mac in the school office to earn the next

level. This reward system will carry over from one year to the next.

The reward system works as follows:

5 Ferries = Bronze

5 Ferries + Bronze = Silver

5 Ferries + Silver = Gold

5 Ferries + Gold = Special badge/pin, an award and a lunch with the principal and teachers for

completing the highest level at the school.

What’s On at Penrith Observatory in August Date: Saturday 11 August 2018

Event name: Public Astronomy Night: When Galaxies Collide

Event details:

Speaker – Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith Special event for the Sydney Science Festival & National Science Week Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith will be talking about our fascinating night sky and signing copies of her new book, When Galaxies Collide (Melbourne

University Publishing, 2018).

When Galaxies Collide delivers a fascinating insight into astronomy and the future of our night sky. As a result, you'll never look up at the night sky in

the same way. When Galaxies Collide peers 5.86 billion years into the future to consider the fate of Earth and its inhabitants. Will the solution be to

live in space without a planet to call home? Will one of the other 100 billion planets spawn life? Learn how to watch this space.

"A fascinating and inspiring tour of the galaxies, illuminated by vivid and often humorous accounts of the day-to-day life of an astronomer." - Professor

Brian Cox.

Astrophysicist, Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith won the Australian Museum's Eureka Prize for the promotion of Australian Science Research (2016) and

the CSIRO Chairman's Medal (2015). She has spent the past 15 years conducting fundamental astrophysics research at universities and research insti-

tutes across the world. Lisa is the resident astrophysicist TV presenter on the wildly popular Stargazing Live on ABC with Professor Brian Cox. She

has performed in sold-out events across Australia with science superstar Neil deGrasse Tyson and Apollo Moon walking astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Gene

Cernan and Charlie Duke.
