Staff News Jo Makin, our PLL, had her review last week. I would like to congratulate her on a successful review. Vicki Wakefield will be away for all of this week. We welcome back Maureen McGee from her week away. Helen Mills is on leave for the next 3 weeks. Rachael Hendry will assist in the Administration area. On Thursday and Friday this week Shandel Flynn, Jo Makin and Brenton Edwards will be attending the Senior Leaders Conference on the Sunshine Coast. Next Monday the Year 2 and 4 teachers will have half day planning followed by Year 3 and 5 teachers on Tuesday. From next Monday, Liz Hales will assist with School Leadership for the last 2 weeks of term, as I will be on Southern Tour with Shandel Flynn and the other staff next week and attending an APPA Conference in the last week. I thank Liz for agreeing to this. Good luck to all of the athletes competing at Regionals. Have a great week! Stephen Montgomery Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ADMINISTRATION

GA Colour Day Our inaugural GA Colour Day will be held on Friday 12 October (Term 4 Week 1). This event will replace the annual Beach-a-thon.

Some projects that we are looking to fund from the proceeds raised are: the purchase of outdoor play equipment (e.g. weatherproof table tennis gear); the construction of more handball courts; the erection of shade sails over the netball courts.

A sponsorship form and parent information letter will be sent home with each student by the end of this week. Once you have the form, jump online at schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Once you do this and raise at least $1 online, you will be entered into the $30,000 Ultimate Family Experience!

Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward – the more money you raise, the better the reward and the more you help the school!

We’re expecting all students to participate in the GA Colour Day and we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love everyone to join us on the day. Further information about how parents/carers can be involved will be available soon.

Uniforms Please remind your child/ren to check the lost property table for any missing items. This table is cleared out regularly. Any item found that has a name on it is returned to its owner. Change to Sports Uniform Day PG, PB, PM, 1G and 1B will need to wear their sports uniform this Thursday (6 September) for their Gross Motor lesson. Have a great week, Brenton Edwards Acting APA

Qualities of Angels Once again our Quality of Angels this week is UNITED. At Prayer Assembly on Monday, 5 Blue reminded us about what it means to be united. They said that being united helps us work and live together peacefully. We feel connected with each other and all living things. When we are united, we accomplish more together than any one of us could alone. Next week we will see many great examples of unity at GA with our Athletics and Ball Games Teams competing in the Gold Coast Catholic Primary Schools Athletics and Ball Games Carnivals on Friday 14 September. We wish them all the best and I’m sure they will once again receive great results by working together. We hope to see lots more unity in our community this week. Monday Morning Cuppa and Catch Up We would like to invite any parents and friends attending Prayer Assembly on Monday 10 September to join the students from 5 Maroon and Mr Alexander for light refreshments served in the Kombumerri Centre Kitchen directly after the assembly concludes. Tuesday Parish Mass Students in 2 Maroon, 2 White, 4 Maroon and 4 White attended mass this morning. 2 Gold, 2 Blue, 4 Gold and 4 Blue students will join other members of our parish community to celebrate Eucharist at 9.00am in two weeks on Tuesday 18 September. Parents and friends are most welcome to attend. Helping Hands for the Harleys A couple of weeks ago, one of our GA families, the Harley family (Ashton 2B & grandson of Graham Harley - Instrumental Music Teacher), lost everything in a house fire. Although everyone was safe, the family was left with only the clothes that they were wearing and one small car that neighbours managed to move away from the fire zone. Obviously the family are now trying to come to terms with the heartbreak of what has happened, particularly given that their belongings were not insured. Whilst there will be some items that will be irreplaceable, such as family photos and mementos, there are others that can be replaced. To this end we are taking up a collection for the family. They have a new place to live and some of the basics but there will be lots of items that they will require.

Guardian Angels is an incredibly generous community and we thank those who have already offered assistance. However, if you are in a position to contribute a small monetary donation to help the Harleys get back on their feet, we know that your support will be greatly appreciated by the family. As an example of what we could achieve together as a community, a donation of just $3 from each GA family would amount to around $1800 – a great way to put this week’s Quality of Angels, which is UNITED, into action. 'Helping Hands for the Harleys' donations can be made via Flexischools or placed in an envelope labelled 'Helping Hands for the Harleys' and delivered to classroom teachers or the school office. Donations will be accepted until the end of this term and will be forwarded on to the family on your behalf. Father's Day Breakfast Thanks to all the dads and father figures who joined us for a special breakfast last Thursday 30 August. We trust you enjoyed the bacon and egg rolls and we hope that you were all totally spoilt on Father’s Day. A big thank you as well to all the staff and students who assisted in preparing and serving the breakfast for our special dads.

Big Writers of the Week: Luca T in Prep B was learning about ch in phonics. He watched a clip about chocolate as a stimulus before the Big Write. This is what Luca T wrote: Chocolate Chocolate grows on trees. But it is not chocolate it is called a pod and when the pods are ready people come with a sharp knife and they chop the pods off the tree and come with a big wooden box and then they put them in the sun.

Kiara Y in 4M has been focussing on using ambitious vocabulary to improve the quality of her writing. Diary Excerpt written as Rowan, the hero in the story “Rowan of Rin” who is forced to go on a quest with other braver townsfolk. Dear Diary, A couple of uncomfortable days ago I was effortlessly hit by a stick from Sheba. I realised it was fake – it was a scroll. I ended up unrolling a scroll of parchment in amazement. But little did I know it was a map for the mountains. The reason why we are climbing the mountains is because sorrowfully the water from the river stopped flowing to our village. We took quite a while for us to make a decision to climb the mountain but right now we have six brave people to climb the dangerous mountain containing a fiery dragon who has lived there for many years. I showed everyone the map and passed it along to everyone one by one. Mischievously the map started fading away. We realised that only I, Rowan of Rin can make the map appear in my hands. Disappointingly I had to come with them to climb the mountain. Before our journey began I remember a confusing poem from Sheba.

“Seven hearts the journey makes, Seven ways the heats will break.”

Somehow, that’s all I remember. I thought that Sheba knows something about this journey and the prophecy of it. But right now I’m going to stick on the way how I’m going to survive. I am struggling with my life right now though. Everyone pities me. They say I’ll never be like my father, a brave, honest, trustworthy and life-risking man who made it into the history of Rin. I am joining the journey. What will happen? I will not be able to write about it until I come back but what lies ahead of me? I am not courageous for what will happen next….. Learning Power Awards: Will be handed out at Assembly In Week 10. These awards are given to 5 members of each year level and are awarded to children who show commitment to using one of our learning powers -creativity, resilience, independence, persistence and collaboration often throughout the term. If you are contacted by your child’s teacher, please keep it a secret Mick Beard Public Speaking Competition will be held in the music room at the base of the amphitheatre in the Kombumerri Centre in Week 10. You will be notified by your child’s class teacher if your child has made the final 10. Have a great week, Jo Makin Primary Learning Leader
