On Thursday 4 August, Warren Central School beat off the cold weather with an ‘Ugg

boot and hot chocolate Day’. The Year 12 students organised and participated in this

event as part of their Year 12 fundraiser. Staff and students were asked to wear

sleepwear for the day as part of the fundraiser. Students have chosen to fundraise

for the Warren Hospital Auxiliary to assist them in upgrading their living area

furniture and were successful in raising over $450. The day was enjoyed by teachers

and students from K-12, where they were able to indulge in a delicious hot chocolate

with a piece of caramel slice or a chocolate chip cookie.

Students are continuing to fundraise for this great cause by selling Cadbury Freddo

chocolate boxes. Everyone is encouraged to get on board and support their charity.

Year 12 students would like to thank Mrs Bernie Robson and Ms Suzanne Mayger for

helping them organise this event.

Education Week Open Learning Areas K - 6

Thank you to the all the parents and caregivers who were able to come along and share last Wednesday afternoon with their student.

Open learning areas were a buzz of activity with classes happening whilst children were keenly showing their work books and work samples to their visitors. After that we had an indoor lunch, due to the very wet and cold weather, with everyone enjoying their scrumptious lunches either provided by home or the school canteen.

Our K - 12 Assembly was a huge success with so many K - 6 students receiving awards and showcasing their various talents either singing, dancing or playing musical percussion instruments.

What a wonderful and social afternoon for all involved.

Your local Vinnies Centre is always looking for more volunteers to assist them in their work. Men and women of all

ages and denominations are welcome and encouraged to become volunteers at our Warren Vinnies Centre. Even a

couple of hours a week would be a great help. Your local Vinnies Centre has a very friendly, social environment and the

work provides a special sense of satisfaction you get from helping others and learning new skills. Various tasks include

sorting donated goods, serving at the counter, clerical, basic computer, interviewing and listening to people in need.

If you are interested in volunteering, drop into the Vinnies Centre, or telephone the Centre on 02 6847 4883.

We would love to hear from you.

Thank you.

Marathon Health Hearing will be returning to Warren Central School in week 6, Tuesday 23 August, to undertake Hearing Screening Tests. This service is free of charge, and if needed offer a direct link to appointments with an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist in Dubbo.

Please complete the attached referral form and return it to your child's classroom teacher, or Mrs Brooker via the front office.

During the month of August, Joblink Plus are joining with “Share the Dignity” in their national campaign to collect sanitary products for women in need. Each of our 34 fulltime sites will be a collection point for their town. You will have a collection box in your office for donations from both the public & staff.

Sanitary products should be a right not a privilege - thousands of homeless and at risk women in Australia are facing unthinkable indignities - an extra item in your grocery trolley will go a long way to help.

To read more about the Share the Dignity campaign, please head to their website: www.sharethedignity.com.au

Falling out the back of a Boot Sunday 31 July saw our inaugural car boot sale. I would like to thank the P&C for their wonderful organisation – the day was a huge success! We had over 20 stall holders, a coffee van, BBQ and many happy vendors and shoppers (some got fantastic bargains) by the end of the day. Thank you to the community for supporting us. Don’t forget – our first Pizza and Pasta night will be on the 28 October – save the date!

Year 12 Fundraising This year, Year 12 are supporting the Warren Hospital Auxiliary. As part of this, Year 12 hosted a Hot (and warm for younger students) Chocolate Day that was very well supported by teachers and students. I would like to thank Year 12, Mrs Robson and Ms Mayger for organising this day.

Education Week Last week saw the 62nd annual Education Week in NSW. This year, our theme was ‘shared stories, better learning, stronger communities’. Everyone has an important part to play in fostering, maintaining and building positive relationships between students, staff, parents and the community. Thank you to all the parents who celebrated with us on the day at our assembly, who visited our learning spaces and hopefully had the opportunity to have lunch with your children.

Warren Junior Rugby Clinic This Saturday 13 August will see a Rugby clinic hosted by The Warren Pumas and NSW Rugby for all children aged 5-12 at Victoria Park from 12 noon. It would be great to see as many children there as possible. Flyer inside this edition of Jumbunna. Duncan Lovelock

7 - 12 News Ag-N-Vet Visit The Stage 5 Agriculture class has been given an assignment to redesign the Ag Plot and determine appropriate enterprises to be run at the school in order to have the Ag plot make money to put back into Agriculture at Warren Central.

Part of this assignment involves costing any infrastructure changes required. On Wednesday 27 July the class visited Ag-N-Vet Warren to investigate costs of infrastructure, including fencing.

Andrew Brewer, manager of Ag-N-Vet, spoke with the students regarding costs as well as engaging them in a discussion regarding potential enterprises.

The visit inspired the students who should now be able to develop solid plans to take our Ag Plot forward.

The school extends a thank you to Ag-N-Vet and Andrew Brewer for their time and expertise to assist the students in this project.

AWI Crutching School

On 3 and 4 August, 12 students from Stage 5 Agriculture attended a crutching school at Haddon Rig run by Mike Pora and Andrew Newstead from Australian Wool Innovation. The school went through many aspects of the wool industry and taught students about safety and the equipment as well as learning to crutch.

By the end of the second day all students were very accomplished and really appreciated the value of learning skills properly. A special mention must be made of Jane Carey who once again showed the boys that girls can do it too.

All students who attended worked really well and were commended by the presenters on their behaviour and work ethic.

As a result, Warren Central has been asked to pen up for the National Shearing Championships in Dubbo in 2017.

In November the students will attend a week long follow up course in which they will learn to shear and about wool handling. This should be a great course and everyone is really looking forward to a hard but very informative week in which they should learn much more about the wool industry. Bill Murray

From the Careers Advisor Term 3 is an extremely important term for Year 12 as they make final preparations for the HSC and life beyond the classroom.

Applications for tertiary study in 2017 opened on 3 August 2016. This means students who are eligible to apply for university (i.e. are getting an ATAR) can apply online before the closing date of 30 September 2016. This is the online closing date with a processing fee of $41. I will be available to complete this process with the students at school but it is important that students are researching courses and finalising preferences.

Year 12 students should have also received in the mail a four-digit UAC (Universities Admissions Centre) pin. Students will need their UAC pin to apply for tertiary study through UAC. They will also receive a UAC application number - these numbers must be kept securely!

Many universities also participate in the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS). This is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission, using criteria other than ATARs. These criteria include school recommendations, senior secondary studies and personal awards and achievements. SRS also closes on 30 September 2016. Again I will be supporting the eligible students through this process. Students need to check for SRS eligibility with the individual universities as not all courses are eligible.

The new UAC books for 2017 are available from me and students will be made familiar with this book during careers lesson in the coming weeks.

A reminder to students (and parents) that I am available for interviews or information regarding careers, tertiary study, apprenticeships and work placement programs. Please call the school office to make an appointment. Robyn Taylor

Stage 3 Excursion

The stage 3 excursion this year is to Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Recreation Centre near Newcastle from 14 November through to 18 November.

Although a final cost has not been finalised due to on-going fund raising activities please start paying some money each fortnight towards your final balance. The total cost of the excursion, per child, will not be under $250.00 so please start on your payments now so it is not such a financial burden on families towards the end of term 3.

Gobondery/NARRAF Touch/Netball Gala Day

We look forward to seeing you there.

Gobondery/NARRAF Athletics Carnival This carnival is being held at Barden Park in Dubbo on Tuesday 16 August. Parents are responsible for transporting their competing student/s to Dubbo and meeting the team manager at Barden Park by 9:00am.

Welcome Miss Wanford

Miss Wanford, from University of New England, will be completing her practicum in Kindergarten Beans during August. Kindergarten students are very excited to have another teacher in the classroom to help out and teach them lots of exciting things.

We welcome Miss Wanford to Warren Central School and hope she has an enjoyable experience.

‘Eat Fresh and Win’ Campaign The ‘Eat Fresh and Win’ Campaign promotes fruit and vegetables and offers each student the opportunity to win great prizes. Each time a student eats a fresh piece of fruit or vegetable at school during ‘Fruito’ they receive an ‘Eat Fresh and Win’ sticker card and sticker. Once they have received two stickers they are given a pencil and rubber and then start again.

At the end of the term all the sticker cards are sent to the organisers for a chance to be in the major draw. This promotion is sponsored by the Sydney Markets, promoting the benefits of eating fresh fruit and vegetables daily.

Year 2 Lupins Year 2 have been working on publishing some of their writing. For this piece of writing they had to draw a robot and write about what it does and how it works. They have all done a wonderful job.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The challenge finishes at the end of August. To allow time for registration it is necessary for all reading logs to be in by the beginning of next week at the very latest. If your child has been reading at home and is almost finished please encourage them to finish it if possible. Certificates are generally received by early December.

Library News Book Week It is that time of the year when the Library becomes a hive of activity! Book Week is on in two weeks (22-26 August) and we have many activities planned. The theme for this year is “Australia! Story Country”.

The Book Fair is on again and will be open all week between 8:45am and 3:15pm every day. We have hundreds of quality books for purchase. All children will be given the opportunity to visit the fair early in the week and will bring home a “wish list”. We hope as many people as possible will be able to support the fair as this support benefits the library as we are able to gain a percentage of the sales in books. We also would welcome any donations of books to the library. Remember Christmas is just around the corner! Books make great gifts!

We will once again be having guest readers in the Library at lunchtime throughout the week. The Book Week assembly is on Thursday 25 at 1:30pm in the school hall, followed by afternoon tea in the Library.

We welcome all members of the community to this exciting event. There will be several items of entertainment performed by the students as well as the parade and announcement of competition winners. We would encourage all children to dress up for Book Week as their favourite book character or something to do with the theme. If possible, it would be fantastic if all children could bring their book with them or see the library staff this week to borrow one or put it aside. The school has a limited supply of costumes available for hire for $1. Children will need to organise this with the library staff by the end of this week as it is too busy during Book Week.

We also are running a variety of competitions with some wonderful prizes on offer. These are not compulsory and are just for fun. Competitions must be at the library by Thursday 15 August for judging and cost 20 cents per entry. Winners will be announced at the assembly. Please contact us at the Library if you have any questions relating to Book Week.
