Editorial

The public in Melbourne are now able to be exposed to the best of both worlds. Chess World and Chess Kids have merged their activities to become one business. This will continue to trade as Chess World Pty Ltd using the business name of Chess Kids for its junior coach-ing.

This new entity will be able to provide quality coaching at schools, for indi-viduals or clubs, as well as offer the best prices in Australia for all chess equip-ment, books and products. Chess World will continue running RJ Shield events, chess parties and anything else you, your friends, your school or your family may need.

We welcome on board Nick Speck, as a brand new full-time chess coach. We wish him and his students all the best.

One of the first things that the combined Chess World will be doing is running a tournament to raise money for the Vic-torian children who will be representing Australia in the World Junior Champi-onships later in the year. The RJ Shield Fundraiser will be held at Melbourne

Most likely your answer to this question would not be “at the Victorian Junior Chess Championships”.

There was a very disappointing turnout for the Under 18, 16 and 14 Age groups. Only 10 players. Consequently a 9 round round-robin was set up, of course 2 hours after the games started someone else tried to enter, unfortunately this would have caused more trouble than it was worth and his entry was refused.

As luck would have it the top two seeds met in the first round. ACF ratings are given, as well as Junior ratings in brack-ets.

The most exciting game of the round was Basnayake – Magat which had both players in time trouble, twice! Eventu-ally the continued pressure from Magat saw Basnayake miss a number of wins before blundering outright and losing the game.

Round 2

Not much happened in Round 2. Mi-chael Magat had a queen for 3 pieces against Gordon Lindberg but ended up getting checkmated. Also a couple of hard fought draws were earned.

Round 3

The big upset of round 3 was Tiko Gawin defeating Gordon Lindberg.

The worst opening of the tournament goes to this game by Alex Colquhoun. After 7 moves she had this position. Needless to say she lost quickly.

Round 4

Denis continues his good form. Vincent Lau consolidates clear second with an-other win, now 3.5/4. However, he has yet to play the top seeds.

Round 5

The brilliancy prize of the tournament was won with the following game.

Round 7

Vincent Lau missed his chance to place in the tournament against Gordon Lindberg. He had 4 passed pawns against a knight, but then for apparently no reason lost them all, and lost the game.

Round 8

Vincent Lau this round was the first (and only) person to take any points off Denis Bourmistrov. He sacrificed a piece for an attack which ended in a purple check.

Victorian Under 12 Championships

Another disappointingly small number of players attended the Under 12 Cham-pionships. Perhaps something to do with school holidays or perhaps a lack of publicity for the tournament? What-ever it was things will be better next year.

Runaway tournament winner was Sam Chow for the second (or is it third?) year in a row. His game against the sec-ond seed, Ruperto Lugo, was surpris-ingly poorly contested. Nobody really offered a real challenge, although James Papa did manage to take a draw.

Under 10 Champion, Ruperto Lugo‘s, experience shined through to consis-tently beat those players below him, al-though again his main challenger was James Papa.

Thor Taylor comfortably won the Un-der 8 title.

All the children on the top 8 boards were asked to record their games; this is one.

“As you asked me, I am sending you one of today's games that I liked. It was against Jade Hall-Kelly. He really made a bad move and blundered his Queen on the 13th move.

Ratings as at the 5th of July, 1999 include all RJ Shield, Cordover Challenge, Polgar Plate, Victorian Junior Cham-pionships and Box Hill Junior Tournaments. They do not in-clude results from Chess Ideas Tournaments as the manage-ment at Chess Ideas refused to submit them for processing. My apologies to the children involved, but there is nothing I can do. Should these tourna-ments be submitted in the fu-ture they will be processed.

Ratings allow players to accu-rately compare their playing ability. The more tournament games a player has played the more accurate their rating be-comes. It is also a good indica-tion of how much a player has improved.

Each player’s Year of Birth is given. If this information is not provided, or it is incorrect please talk to David Cordover to remedy this problem. At the end of 1999 all players who do not have their year of birth reg-istered will be removed from the rating list. Most schools this year elected to play in the one-day competition structure. The home & away series seems to be too much organisation for the teachers and students. However it is a preferred option for the schools to play in a weekly com-petition. That way the students are play-ing regular chess and have something to look forward to each week, rather than just an once a term, or even once a year game of chess.

Only a few zones remain for the year so if your school is interested in participating you will have to contact the Victorian Chess Association very soon.

Last we heard the AJC Committee was discussing the pro’s and con’s of sending the tournament to Morwell.

With the failure of the Victorian Junior Championships it has been proven that the number of players willing to dedicate a lengthy period of time to chess is small. However, this small group of players are so dedicated that a trip to Morwell will be seen as a good thing (no parents, no bor-ing home, plenty of chess).

Luckily for us the decision has been made to hold the tournament in Morwell subject to certain sponsorship conditions being met. These are due to be presented to the committee on July 11th.

So, prepare yourselves for a two week holiday at the end of the year. Morwell here we come!

Interschool

Half way through the interschool season and things are going well. This is the time to offer thanks to the many people who work behind the scenes to keep the com-petition running. So, thank you to Bill Collins, Gary Wastell and David Cor-dover for the efforts they are putting in to make the tournament a success.

Unfortunately one zone was cancelled, the Fitzroy Zone, due to a lack of interest, but another Zone, the Waverley Zone, had to be split to accommodate the large interest!

We now have venues confirmed for all remaining Zones:

Grade 3, Brighton, Brighton Primary

Grade 3, Toorak, Glamorgan

Caulfield Zone, Grimwade House

Hawthorn Zone, Bialik College

Croydon Zone, Yarra Rd Primary

Girls’ Zone, Fintona Girls’ School

Brighton Zone, Brighton Grammar

Progression to the Finals is based on this simple formula: ‘x’ divided by 4. Where ‘x’ is equal to the number of teams in the Zone. The result is always rounded down. If two teams finish on an equal score they both progress to the finals.

If things go according to plan for the rest of the year the A-grade finals will be a 10 team Round Robin event. The B-grade finals will be a more open tournament be-ing held as a 9 round swiss tournament.

FEEDBACK

This year the Victorian Junior Champi-

onships did not attract a huge number of players, however there were two players who attempted to enter late. One tried en-tering only 3 hours late, the other more than 24 hours after the tournament started. Of course neither of these players were allowed a place.

Next year it is proposed to have a sepa-rate tournament for players who fail to enter on time. Our only worry is this tour-nament may be bigger than the real one!

Who would have thought that the Aus-

tralian Junior Championships could at-tract sponsorship in the amounts that are being offered by Morwell? Would you really pay to have a bunch of chess-players show up on your doorstep?!

Trying to print the magazine with the

new version of Publisher has been quite a task. My printer seems to find it incredi-bly difficult to cope with the large .pub files. This afternoon my printer behaved as though it had been in the .pub all day!

Many players seem to develop their pieces with no plan when they find themselves playing in a normal opening such as this one. Here I will give you one idea of what you can play so you have a plan when playing these common openings.

1. e4 e5

2. Nf3 Nc6

3. Bc4 Bc5

4. O-O d6

The key is to leave your knight on g8 for as long as possible. This gives you the option of O-O-O. Bring the bishop out to pin White’s knight as soon as you can. Then you can add pressure to the pinned piece with moves like …Nd4 and …Qf6. Black can also develop the knight to f6 and when White plays Bg5 reply with …h6 then …g5 and castle Q-side. Even play …h6 and …g5 before the bishop comes out, then the knight can play to e7-g6-f4!

What to watch out for.

• Don’t play …Qf6 if White is going to play Nd5

and attack your Q and your c7 pawn at the same time.

• You will need to have your King safe if White

plays for a quick d4, opening up the centre.

• Watch for his bishop coming to g5. h6 and g5

help your attack anyway.

Brain Teaser

It is White’s turn to move. Have there been any pawns

promoted in this game?

- Muneaki Tsuda Black's King could not have been at g2 or e2 because White's pawns are there. It could not have been at f3 or g3 because White's pawns at row 2 are in their original position. It could not have been at e1 because White's King and rook cannot check Black at the same time. It could not have been at e3 be-cause it must have been out of check before that. The only possibilities in which it could have been out of check at e3 are:

a) if the bishop at c1 was not in diagonal with Black's King at e3. With pawn at b2, it is impossible.

b) If there was a piece at d2 that does not check the king at e3 but could have moved to either the current position on the board or to f2. This is also not possible.

It could not have been at g1 because it must have been out of check before that. Because of pawn at h2, that is not possible.

The only possibility is the remaining f1, and if it was at f1 there must have been a piece at g1 that does not check the king but later moves to either the current position on the board or to f2. Bishop at g1 is the only possibility. Two bishops are on the same color, and therefore one of them must have been promoted from White's pawn.

Last Moves: Black-King at e1 to f1 White-Bishop at g1 to f2 (check) Black-King at f1 takes on f2

• Private Lessons

So, you want to become a better chess player? The fastest way to improve is to get coach-ing. Your coach can provide guidance and support as well as forcing you to actually prac-tice! Get coaching once a week, once a fortnight or even just occasionally to give you that extra confidence it requires to win matches!

Cost: $35 per hour at your place. $25 per hour at Chess Kids, 1/114 Neville St, Carnegie.

• Group Lessons

Get together some of your friends, or just let us know that you are interested in being part of our group coaching, and we can place you with other players of a similar standard.

Cost: From $10 per hour.

• School Chess

We are experienced at establishing chess clubs in a school. Our pleasant style ensures that the club will grow to make chess an integral part of school life. We coach at Essex Heights Primary School, who are the 1998 National Primary Schools Champions. Thanks to Chess Kids the club has grown from 20 to 80 players in the past year!

Chess is a useful enrichment activity. Chess Kids has some fabulous ideas about how chess can be used as a problem solving and lateral thinking game. We run some of our programs at G.A.T.E.WAYS as well as schools such as Glamorgan (Geelong Grammar), and Essex Heights.

Cost: From $50 per hour.

• Exhibitions/Tournaments/Parties

We do blindfold displays, simultaneous exhibitions, and organize fundraisers where you can give the display! And if you are planning a tournament, someone from Chess Kids can organise it for you. Why not have a Chess Kids birthday party, with activities, games and fun for all ages.
