Cross-Country

Our Trinity Cross-Country was planned for this Friday, however, unfortunately the weather has

not been kind to us this week and Friday’s prediction is not good. Due to this a decision has been made to postpone the event. We will reschedule a time for next term and inform parents

when it is organised.

Year 5 Excursion

Our Year 5 students are heading to the Melbourne Museum on Thursday as part of their Australian Immigration and Colonisation unit. The students are to wear their sports uniform and

the buses will depart at 9.00am sharp. The students will return at 3.15pm. Emma Lamb is the

teacher on charge of the excursion.

Building Program

Work is progressing quickly on the renovation of the Marian Building. All demolition work has been completed and the builders are now constructing the new design. As mentioned previously in several newsletters, after careful consideration and discussions amongst the staff and the

School Education Board, it has been decided that the Marian Building will become the F-2 area upon its conclusion. The reasons behind this decision are as follows;

The Marian Building will now have the capacity to house all of the F-2 classrooms creating a

junior learning hub.

At the conclusion of the whole build the external student toilets will be removed and all

toilets will be internal. Removing these ‘wings’ will create a great open play area just out

the front of the Marian Building, an ideal spot for junior play.

The Joyce Building will be the new Middle 3/4 area and the Allen Building will be the Senior

5/6 area.

Placing all of the junior and middle grades together will then give the school a distinct

Junior, Middle and Senior area. Currently we have F/1, 2/3/4 and 4/5/6 areas.

This will be less disruptive for the classrooms during the building process. The F/1 students

will only move once, into their new rooms. The grade 2 students move straight back into their new rooms at the completion of the Marian Building. The grade 3 and 4 students can remain where they currently are until the Joyce building is completed (next to be

renovated) and then all move to their new area.

The adjustment compliments and aligns with the new learning outcomes in the Victorian

Curriculum.

Anticipated build times are;

Marian Building – Completed by late July. Joyce Building - Commence early August and completed by mid October.

Allen Building – Commence mid October and completed late January. Administration – Commence late January and completed early May

This is a very exciting time for Trinity as the building progresses and we create more

contemporary, flexible and welcoming learning spaces. The aim of the project is:

To build more contemporary, flexible, collaborative and welcoming learning spaces for the

students and staff. Trinity currently has a large amount of space that is not used as

effectively as it could be.

To have all student toilets housed internally to increase student safety.

The new building will not create a large open ‘barn style’ learning area.

The contemporary new learning spaces will be a more open collaborative environment,

however, it still has walls and dedicated break out areas for each classroom. It will more adequately and creatively use all of the space within the buildings and be furnished appropriately to accommodate 21st century learning. You could equate it to comparing a

1970’s style home to a more contemporary 2016 open plan style home. You still have dedicated rooms and specific purpose areas but overall the design is more open and

welcoming.

Students will still have their own grade and their own class. It will not be all grades in

together.

The administration area of the school does not cope with a school our size. The

refurbishment will create increased security for our students (an unfortunate reality of our

times), a new parent entry, a more adequate first aid room, a new staff work area and

staffroom, new meeting rooms for parents and staff as well as a new office area.

The Multi-Purpose Room will have a Sanctuary created at the ‘playground end’ so when we

are celebrating Mass at school there is a permanent altar and sacred space.

I will continue to keep parents updated as to the progress of this very exciting initiative as it

develops. To get an understanding of what students, parents and staff can expect to enjoy I encourage you to come to school in the morning during these winter days, the lack of light gives you a great view into the building. Alternatively you can take a virtual tour through the

administration area by following the link; https://www.hightail.com/download/bXBZZUN0Q1JUWUMwYjhUQw Please note that colours and finer details are still to be decided

upon. A virtual tour of the Marian building can be viewed at https://www.hightail.com/download/ZWJYZXQ2UENlcEp2Zk1UQw

I am sure as you take a virtual tour through the rooms you will see how much more welcoming, collaborative and contemporary the new space is whilst still allowing individual classroom spaces for each grade. Please note that the virtual tours are concept drawings and whilst they are very

close, they are not 100% reflective of the building.

Staffing

Miss Donna Johnston has been selected as one of only three primary school teachers in the Sale Diocese to be a sponsored attendee at the 2016 World Youth Day in Poland. This is a huge

credit to Donna and we wish her all the very best on her journey. Donna is looking forward to sharing her experience and learning with the Trinity community upon her return. We welcome back Felicity Cramp from maternity leave for the first four weeks of next term to teach Donna’s

grade during her absence.

Miss Michelle Nolan will be getting married to her partner James on the holidays and then honeymooning for the first seven weeks of next term. We hope that she has a wonderful

wedding day and a safe and enjoyable honeymoon. Thanks to Nicola Schultze who will be

teaching grade 2N whilst Michelle is away.

Miss Tara Todisco has accepted a position at St Joseph’s in Hawthorn commencing Term Three. We wish her well in her new position. It is with pleasure that we welcome Miss Stephanie Barker

onto the staff who will be taking over Tara’s grade 6 class. Stephanie is an experienced teacher

who is excited to be joining Trinity. I am sure that she will be made to feel welcome by all.

I will be on Long Service Leave for the first two weeks of Term Three. Liz Jones will be the

Acting Principal in my absence and Kathryn Pepper the Acting Deputy Principal. It is reassuring

to know that the school is in such capable hands in my absence.

I wish all families a very safe and relaxing holiday and I look forward to working with you all

again in Term Three.

CHOICE THEORY REVIEW

Throughout the Term we have explored many aspects of Choice Theory. This week I thought I’d

take the time to revisit some of the key messages covered over the past 10 weeks. Choice Theory attempts to explain that people choose their behaviour and that this choice is

based on their needs at a particular time. William Glasser explains that we have survival needs, as well as the needs of love and belonging, power, freedom and fun.

People have an internal world that is referred to as the quality world. The quality world is our ideal place, the place where all our basic needs are met. The real world is the world that we

perceive through our sensual, total knowledge and value filters. We are constantly attempting to align our perceived world with our quality world. When they are in balance with each other, we have no need to behave in a way that tries to adjust our perceived world. When our perceived

world is markedly different from our quality world, then we behave in a manner that attempts to bring these worlds into balance. Behaviour in itself is neither good nor bad; it is learnt and

serves the useful purpose of bringing our perceived world into balance with our quality world. It is when the behaviour we choose brings us into conflict with the people around us that there are problems.

According to Glasser all behaviour is Total Behaviour, and is made up of four components:

1. Acting (e.g., walking, talking) 2. Thinking (e.g., reasoning, fantasising)

3. Feeling (e.g., angering, depressing) 4. Physiology (e.g., sweating, head aching)

Glasser states that while every behaviour is made up of the four parts, only two of the parts –

our thinking and our acting – are under our direct control. Our feelings (emotions) and our physiology (i.e. – heart rate, eye dilation, breathing, etc.) reflect and/or come into line with our thinking and acting, but we cannot control them directly.

Total Behavior is often compared to a diagram of a car, with the front wheels (those that we

directly steer) representing thinking and acting, and the back wheels representing feelings and physiology. Because of this reality, Choice Theory reminds us to focus on the front two wheels – thinking and acting – as much as possible.

SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY Please note the following School Closure & Student Free Day

CHOICE THEORY REVIEW

Choice theory provides us with “Seven Caring Habits” and “Seven Deadly Habits” that affect our

relationships with others and either bring us closer together or push us further apart.

Reality Therapy is the process of applying Choice Theory. It is a counselling tool which can help stimulate a person’s intrinsic motivation to choose a more appropriate form of behaviour. It helps people to examine what they are doing and then teaches them to evaluate their behaviour

and plan to do better. People are responsible for their own behaviour and they must accept responsibility for it in order to move forward.

The procedure commonly used in Reality Therapy that leads to change is known as the “WDEP” system.

W Wants

What do you want? (Help people clarify his or her Quality World pictures in the specific situation) D Doing What are you currently doing to get it?

E Evaluation Is what you are doing helping you get what you want (now or in the long run)?

P Plan Would you like to try something different? Make a plan.

In summary, Choice Theory states that all behaviour is communication and that it is our best attempt to get what we want. In the process, we may break laws, disregard rules and hurt

others but those are really just side effects of doing the best we know how to get our needs met. We are all doing our best—some of us simply have better tools, resources and behaviours at our disposal than others.

Have a safe and enjoyable Winter break with your family and friends.

SPORTS NEWS TRINITY HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY POSTPONED

Our House Cross Country, scheduled for Friday, 24th June has been postponed due to inclement

weather. This event will be rescheduled for later in the year.

AFL FOOTY CLINIC POSTPONED

Regretfully the AFL Footy Clinic scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed until further notice.

This is due to the inclement weather forecast and the wet and muddy condition of our playground. A make-up session is being arranged late next Term for classes that missed out last

week.

LAST WEEK’S FOOTY CLINIC

Most classes were fortunate enough to participate in last week’s Footy Clinic before the rain forced us to take cover and cancel the rest of the day. The

students had a wonderful time practising and developing their skills. They rotated through various

activities, drills and games.

Kind Regards,

Catrina Charman and Nicole Cahill

PARISH PRIEST’S CORNER

WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM

Have you ever been asked in the course of a conversation when meeting someone for the first time, what do

you do? It is certainly one of our regular questions when we are introduced to one another. Our chosen

career says a lot about who we are. I know that whenever I go for a haircut the question usually arises.

Once I say that I am a priest you can feel the conversation change.

Jesus’ question to his disciples that we hear in the gospel this weekend is challenging. “Who do you say that

I am?” He wants to know whether they are hearing his message and truly understanding the implication of

the relationship with him. There is no mistaking his words: you need to pick up your cross and follow Him.

When it comes to belonging to a parish there are many aspects that sustain the life of our community. One

of the powerful gifts in our community is our volunteers. Whether that be our sacristans, Ladies who

arrange our flowers, cleaners, catechetic leaders, altar servers, finance committee, Pastoral Council, Legion

of Mary, welcome group and the list goes on. Our Volunteer ministries are constantly saying that Jesus is

one who came to serve and not to be served.

We pray that the life of our community will always have the generosity of our volunteers who sustain the

vibrancy of our parish. One of the aspects of volunteer ministry is that it is time related, at different

moments in our lives we are able to give, in fact we want to give. Knowing Christ is revealed in our service

to one another. Fr Brendan
